so have you never let emotion get the better of you? Emotion my arse, it's nowt to do with emotion. He's fully aware that you dont shout expletives down a bloody television camera. He just thinks he's above it all, the immature cnut. So that makes 20,000+ Stoke fans immature when they sing expletives to opposition players even when the games live on air correct?

I think you're missing the point. This isn't swearing at a match. It's going out of your way to swear in front of millions of viewers at home and kids who's parents might not want them to attend a match (at their current age) precisely to avoid that sort of thing. In this case, it's about not having a choice in the matter. On top of which, swearing is for after a certain hour on tv - not early afternoon. mountain out of a molehill any good parent would explain the situation to their children anyway. That he's an arsehole who can't keep his gob shut for £150,000 a week? Pointless having any sort of respect campaign in football with attitudes like this and it's pointless expecting kids playing the game to not tell the ref to fuck off when things don't go their way. We'll see how serious the authorities are about their campaign now.

I've not got a problem with swearing at all (that's probably fairly obvious) but it's just the fact he's such a prick with it. He's got no regard for anybody but himself and thinks he's above everyone and everything, whilst also believing he's Rocky fucking Balboa.
Fuck off Rooney. You piggy twat.

The crowd chanting in the background is not the same as a player running up to the camera and aggresively swearing at it for all the world to hear.
If there was nothing wrong with what Rooney did then why would a) the FA be looking into it and b) he have issued a statement directly after the match apologising for his innappropriate outburst.
What Rooney did wasn't a celebration. He acted like some sort of rabid animal and like he'd just been victorious in some sort of gladitorial death match.

Football is the only sport that has this problem and it's the only sport that has a signifcant problem at kids' level of the same sort of thing. That is why it needs to be controlled. If Rooney is too thick to understand that two days after the Premier league announce a new respect campaign he shouts expletives directly into a camera, he needs to learn the hard way. One match ban. No fines. No statement 'reminding him of his responsibilities.' Do something he cares about.

So basically it's a money thing, if you earn a lot then you aren't allowed to swear or abuse anyone.
Yet the working folk who watch those on the big money have the devine right to put up with the abuse as they earn a lot it's ok.

So reading half the comments on here you guys have never joined in the WANKER! WANKER! WANKER! chant aimed at opposition players? You've never swore in anger or passion at a bad tackle, dive etc.. at opposition players?
I mean there are young children all around the ground and we have a dedicated family area so surely you should all know better?

There are times, situations and contexts where swearing is acceptable to the majority and times, situations and contexts when it is not.
There is no comparison between Rooney and the football fans.. and yes, the fact that he and all Premier League and world class footballers earn a lot of money does have something to do with this.
They have (as rolemodels and public figures), an obligation to act properly.
Any money we pay towards football ends up in some way contributing towards footballers wages, so the least i expect from any footballer is some respect for the fans.
Rooney has a knack of stepping over the mark and he needs to be put back in his place.

There is no doubt many children on here so surely we should be looking a little closer to home than someone swearing on a camera? My kids aren't allowed on here. It's not appropriate for them. It's all about context. If I suddenly started swearing in a meeting at work, there'd be a problem. If I swore in front of the same people later over a drink, different thing. Rooney doesn't get that and neither do some of you on here. He's paid a lot of money and with that comes some responsibility. He's ignored that so he deserves to be punished. My guess is the authorities will bottle it and their whole respect thing will be dead in the water, spineless weasels.

People make me laugh they really do...
We moan when celebrities and sportman are treated different to us, yet we expect them to behave different to us.
Like i've said you hear abusive behaviour and language at every game you go by supporters regardless of who is watching yet this is accepted as the norm because these players earn big money and should put up with it.
Yet a player says a few swear words to a camera and those abuive fans come out the woodwork being all hollier than thou and saying what a horrible person he is.

I could probably youtube many different interiviews in sport where the athlete has sworn in the heat of the moment and it doesn't even get a second thought apart from an apology but because it's Rooney it's a truly horrific crime.
Maybe Pulis should have been banned for headbutting a team mate? That was all over the news and surely not setting a role model example to youngsters?

My kids have always been told they will hear it but it stays in the ground, but some people go too far when they know there are loads of kids about. I expect swearing in the stands, I don't expect filth.

A normal person gets caught with drugs they go to prison. A celeb gets caught with drugs and they go to rehab and get a million pound deal with hello magazine. If i'm sat with friends of mine and my sons there none of them will swear in front of him and if they do they will apologise. This is pretty much the same thing. A situation where you do not expect to be confronted with swearing. As for Rooneys apology, don't make me laugh. I heard that statement and there's no way he could come up with that by himself in a million years. He didn't even have the common decency to apologise himself.

For the record i personally find Rooney to be an utter moron who would be in prison if not playing football. I can also hold a conversation without the need of expletives.
Yet i can walk to a Stoke game and there are some who can't finish a sentence without doing so and it's accepted as the norm.
You also hear it no end in movies after 8pm when children are still up and watching, they hear it on the play ground, they hear it from parents, they hear it in the streets.
It's on tv and around us every day yet we seem to have this high and mighty attitude to a couple of f words on tv.
What it really boils down to in my opinion is the simple fact of jealousy to the succesful and we will knock them for everything they do.
I'm sure if the cameras were in hanley and some typical old local said "I love fucking hanley duck" we'd be laughing it off and calling him a legend.
