Not talking historically, but had a brief conversation with Dave Kitson and Andy someone (physio?) a few years back and they both said, bar none, the toughest player in the Stoke changing room bar was Rory Delap.

Going back even longer EDDIE CLAMP saw him at the vic headbutt a walsall player and just walk straight down the tunnel not even waiting for the ref to send him off mmmmm thoses where the days lol I saw that incident and I thought it was at the Boothen end against Blackburn Rovers and that the player was Clayton (who also played for England). Clamp was actually laughing as he walked of the pitch in a game we were leading. I can't remember if Blackburn came back to equalize or if they went on to win the game - it was one or the other. Of course Clamp was so volatile that torquay potter could be talking about another similar event! As I said on earlier post on this thread Eddie definitely did this vs Burnley in 1963. I,remember it because it was my first ever match and he nutted their winger John Connelly and walked straight down the tunnel. We were winning 3-0 at half time but Burnley clawed their way back into it and the game swung one way then the other and ended 4-4 with Tony Allen putting through his own net to give them a late equaliser. Strangely our next home game vs Sheff Wed ended same score with us again dominating by half time 3-1 up.

Someone mentioned George Kinnell who was a tough Scottish Centre Half, who was no mean player , but I always remember him as the player who chased a young Alan Ball then playing for Blackpool all over the pitch after Ball had tripped him , when he caught him he grabbed him round the throat Taggart style and I don't think he even got booked!!.

He's not often though of as a tough nut, but one of the dirtiest players I've seen at Stoke is Peter Dobing.

Clamp was lying on the ground grinning and putting his thumbs up to the boothen end. Clamp could always be found in the supporters club just before the game. Hard as nails and Stan's minder, never seen anybody as hard on a football pitch.

James O'Connor. He was only 3 foot tall but used to kick everybody.
Didn't Johnny Rudge have to go represent him at a hearing after he picked up 20 yellow cards one season?
In all seriousness though, it has to be Sthaniuk. The amount of forearm smashes he would throw out on the sly was unbelievable.

I remember Mick Kennedy getting fined or banned for claiming he was the hardest man in football sometime in the 90s. Billy Whitehurst for me. In an edition of 442 Vinnie Jones paid hommage to him being the hardest bastard around. Was it Alvin Martin who said he was marking Billy one time and nearly got drunk from the fumes emanating from the big man

It depends how you define Hard. If it is how much punishment you can take, there is one clear winner, the guy who made the Guinness Book of Records for sporting injuries and hails from the Meir. He did not have a vicious streak though. I didn't see Eddie Clamp play but when I was younger I worked with older guys at the Coal Board who said he was a nutter, literally. If you want being able to take it and looking to give it out, then it would be Maurice Setters, a real nasty piece of work on the field, and not someone you would want to bump into on a dark night in Longton. Sorry pedro but that stuff about Maurice Setters might be true on the field but off the field he was just a bully and a nasty one at that. Never met the man myself but me dad was in The Kings Troop with him and put Setters on his arse twice after he threw some young stable lads in the horse shit pit for no reason at St Johns Wood...'army japes' if you will. I get regaled with this event every Christmas The old man didnt take too kindly to this, seeing though the 2 young uns were under his wing so to speak so he stuck up for em. Another note to add to Setters 'likeable character' was he was one of the VERY few who got given EXTRA service at the end of his career. He walked in to the RSM office when signing out, threw his papers on the seargants desk and said "sign them yer bastard" The RSM took one look at him, frogged marched him down to the horse stables and told him to clean them for an extra week all on his own. In them days you couldnt wait to get out of the place True story Whenever the old man used to see Setters on the touchline with Jack Charlton in his Republic of Ireland managerial days " he used to scream at the TV " SIT DOWN SETTERS YER BASTARD" Setters = not a nice man.
