my dad told me of a story of maurice setters winding up dennis law his old team mate from the utd we were playing utd at the vic and maurice gave dennis law a real hard tackle instead of pulling him up and shakin his hand maurice sat on the floor next to him and patted him on the head grinning mental!!!!! My dad told me a story of a young Stoke player who was a bit of a dog with the other players wives. Maurice didn't like that and it was 'arranged' that he would sort the lad out. Apparently he sorted the whole thing out under the Boothen. I don't think the philanderer stayed with us for long after that. He went Chelsea and changed his name to John Terry

I had a long chat with John Rudge and he said Robert Huth was by far the hardest player he'd ever come across in all his years in the game.

Chris maskery was a tough fcuker and what a beauty of a punch that took that Everton player out at the old Vic in front of the dugout.

continued friendship with nello
Interesting reaction by Uriah Rennie, initially just watching Wise being strangled.
Seeing his continuing friendship with Nello perhaps he was a closet Stokie ????

It depends how you define Hard. If it is how much punishment you can take, there is one clear winner, the guy who made the Guinness Book of Records for sporting injuries and hails from the Meir. He did not have a vicious streak though. I didn't see Eddie Clamp play but when I was younger I worked with older guys at the Coal Board who said he was a nutter, literally. If you want being able to take it and looking to give it out, then it would be Maurice Setters, a real nasty piece of work on the field, and not someone you would want to bump into on a dark night in Longton.

Going back even longer EDDIE CLAMP saw him at the vic headbutt a walsall player and just walk straight down the tunnel not even waiting for the ref to send him off mmmmm thoses where the days lol Sure you're not mistaking it with the Burnley game in 63. Our Eddie nutted their winger John Connelly and did walk off down the tunnel. That was my first ever game watching Stoke it ended 4-4 after we had been slaughtering them 3-0 by half time. Eddie was sort of minder to Sir Stan and often got himself into trouble defending Stan. Legend has it he told the notorious Chopper Harris to back off Stan with a threat of a fate worse than death. Harris dutifully did so apparently. In my time watching Stoke there have been many hard men Clamp, Setters, Smithy, Pejic, Watson to name a fenw. But my old man, a Stokie since 1930, reckons Charlie Scrimshaw in the 1930s was the hardest and ugliest player ever to play for Stoke. Think he was a full back. Edit: just noticed this thread is over 4 years old and I said the same in 2010. Who and why was this thread suddenly resurrected?

With that defence I wouldn't bother with a keeper. Nobody would dare cross the half way line.

Denis Smith has the one that gets best remembered from way back when I were a lad but let's not forget Bluto Bloor he was hard as nails and never seemed to get himself injured either

Smithy springs too mind, but Mike Pejic and Mickey Bernard weren't exactly woofters! Also, as noted, Eddie Clamp, but her was also certifiable...good to watch though. Dobing, hard with finesse! If Eddie Clamp was still alive you would be very brave putting that

Smithy was hard but Bluto's crunching tackles were hardcore. For a sample watch the League Cup final video.
Marshy or Pej didn't mess about either
What a back four that was
I can't magine any of that quartet getting through the full 90 minutes these days!
Proper football that

Never saw, only read about the exploits of Clamp, Setters, et al.
For me it was Marsh, Bluto, Smithy & Pej. Most of today's players would shit themselves confronted with this quartet, if the modern game hadn't outlawed tackling that is?
Didn't Pejic get booed by his own fans once for putting Southampton's Terry Payne into the Boothen Paddock?
Oh, Noel Blake was a very scary man, took players out with just a stare!

Going back even longer EDDIE CLAMP saw him at the vic headbutt a walsall player and just walk straight down the tunnel not even waiting for the ref to send him off mmmmm thoses where the days lol I saw that incident and I thought it was at the Boothen end against Blackburn Rovers and that the player was Clayton (who also played for England). Clamp was actually laughing as he walked of the pitch in a game we were leading. I can't remember if Blackburn came back to equalize or if they went on to win the game - it was one or the other. Of course Clamp was so volatile that torquay potter could be talking about another similar event!

We've had a few. Ray Wallace could put it about a bit as could Stigger when he bent Neil Aspins leg. JImmy O'Connor was prone to leaving a boot in as was Micky Bernard.
