Billy whitehurst became a bare knuckle fighter when he finished playing. You don't get more mental than that! Works as a contractor on refineries and power stations now, as a general all round hardman/rough bastard he has to be #1.

Nevr saw Eddie Clamp but my Dad sais he knew how to handle himself.
Maurice Setters probably top of my list for hardness with a vicious streak. as well
Dennis wasn't particularly vicious, just hard as nails.
Mick Kennedy could put it about a bit.
Kamara 'shit out' against Vinnie Jones in a well publicised show down at The Vic... very dissappointing from a supposed hard man.
Noel Blake, the scariest looking fooitballer by a country mile. I'd have just give him the ball and run away if he was facing me ;D

My Bro is a Blue Nose and was at the infamous Blues West Ham cup Tie in the early 80s- three pitch invasions both sides on the pitch slugging it out.The last invasion by the 8,000 Hammers was the worst- the players ran off the pitch, Zulus came on- mass brawel folowed- then after 5 minutes he noticed that Noel Blake hadnt left the pitch he was still fighting and delivering class head butts- no thats nuts. Having said that Smith,Pejic and Bluto never get a harder back line than that.FFs Smith played with a fractured spine!

I've always heard Maurice Setters was the hardest pound for pound and a touch of psycho.
In my time, I'd put Abdy pretty high on the list.

I've seen 'em all since 1950 and the hardest were John McCue, Maurice Setters, Eddie Clamp and Denis Smith. Eddie Clamp was also clever with it, and refs didn't always notice as often it was off the ball in revenge!

My dad told me a story of a young Stoke player who was a bit of a dog with the other players wives. Maurice didn't like that and it was 'arranged' that he would sort the lad out. Apparently he sorted the whole thing out under the Boothen. I don't think the philanderer stayed with us for long after that. Hardest I remember were Denis or Bluto with Pej close behind. Eric Skeels was no pushover either.

Remember John Mc Cue at Northern Collage when he use to take 5 side and join in, he would put you in the wall and just laugh ,he must have been 60.A old guy used to tell be that Eddie Clamp would in the supporters club having a drink before the match and heard one opposition fan saying he needed a boxing glove on his head. But I would say Setters was the hardest with is bowlegs ,even use to punch is own team mates.

Quite right they had to fetch Clamp out of the supporters club in lime street at 15-00 when kick offs were 15-15 , he always had is strip and boots on ready for when was called and ran out of the supporters club through Stokes main enterance and onto the pitch ...

I remember Mick Kennedy getting fined or banned for claiming he was the hardest man in football sometime in the 90s.
Billy Whitehurst for me. In an edition of 442 Vinnie Jones paid hommage to him being the hardest bastard around.

I remember John MCue, I was only a youngster, but he really was a hard man. Can somebody remind me about something. I once heard a story that either John McCue or Eddie Clamp appointed themselves as Stan Matthews minder. The story went on, that god help one of the oposing team if they ever tackled Stan badly cuz they would probobaly get a broken leg!

1. Dennis Smith (according to my old man) 2. Vince Overson
I remember watching Stoke play away at Bath City in the FA Cup after they had held us to a 0-0 at home, Bath had a pacey, muscle bound lad up front called Mings, he skinned Vince for pace early on, next time he got the ball out by the touch line, Vinny just clattered him, home crowd were spitting out their carrots, the lad never wanted the ball again all game! What a captain in our Macari days he was.....

Smithy springs too mind, but Mike Pejic and Mickey Bernard weren't exactly woofters! Also, as noted, Eddie Clamp, but her was also certifiable...good to watch though. Dobing, hard with finesse!

Although I love Abdy Faye I have never seen anything on the pitch that would define him as a hard man. Wilko yes, even Whelan sometimes (Gets kicked but never flinches), but not Faye. Please correct me if I am wrong.
As for hard Stokies, Taggart and Smithy.
