Stoke 0 Coventry 1 A crowd of just 6.930 witnessed Stoke's last top flight game ( Me amongst them !! ) Whilst not wanting to sound too much like a Brazil fan we are now in our best position to return .... Macari's play off team came close but I think we all knew we'd fall short after the Pesch sale Anyway I didn't think it would be 23 years till we played at that level again but I am now starting to believe I wonder how many of that 6,930 are stiill going ??? COME ON YOU RIP ROARING POTTERS !!!!

I was there, We sat on the Boothen end most of the season. I remember at the time we all thought go down for a couple of seasons get sorted then we'll be back up again. At the time I was a 14 year old school kid now i'm a 37 year old farther of 3. A life time has passed since we played top flight football, fucking crimanal when you think about it

I was there, and I took my son for his first ever game so that he could always say he had seen Stoke play in the top flight. I had a feeling then it might be a long time before we were back..
He fell asleep through most of it but I remember waking him up whrn we got a penalty so that he could say he had seen us score in the top flight. Bloody Ian Painter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was at time when men were men. you didn't do that kind of thing then, you'd probably get a kickin for doing that kind of thing. Gazza's got a lot to answer for. ;D

I'd never have guessed that night that 23 years later we still wouldn't have returned to the top level at all.

'We sat on the Boothen end most of the season'
That was one way of avoiding the on pitch tragedies of that season.

I was there with big hair and a tank top, 14 years old and absolutely gutted. I went to Bradwell High School which was mainly full of Vale fans, and had nothing but stick about our 'record breaking' season. Thank god Wimbledon and Sunderland have relieved us of some of those 'lowest' records. The funniest thing was that we still managed to beat Man Utd at home.
Funny old game isn't it saint?

did you guys cry at full time then? No, we finished off the party that started the Boxing-Day some five months earlier, when we beat Manure - And won the World Cup (I think 2-1, but can't be 'arrised to go and check). Manure were so drunk/hungover that I got tipsy just from trying to belt them as they stumbled out of the tunnel! As JPM says, we knew we were down at Xmas, it became a bit of a thing to keep turning up to watch us loose ... As me dad kept saying "I've bloody paid for these Season-Tickets; we're usin' 'em!" The atmosphere stayed pretty good right until the end of the season (from them who kept going) ... ... Something the older boys should remember next season if the great day finally occurs ... (A smiley for Mark71 to - Doesn't time fly!!!?) ah

I was there mate and I'm proud to say that in the 521 home league games since then I've only missed 6 matches (illness/travel). (Surely THAT deserves a bit of positive karma if nothing else, )

What's all this bullshit about being down in December and January? We were down before the clocks went back That Coventry match was one of the lowest moments of the season for me. We had a real opportunity that night to haul them down with us and inflict misery on their supporters and we ballsed it up. Coventry then went on to spend nearly 20 more years in the top flight and we could've stopped that.

We were officially relegated on April 20th, we lost to Everton that day. The only things that cheers me up when i think back to that year are the fact derby may be relegated even earlier this season and that Sunderland got fewer points than our 17 when they went down a couple of years ago.

I still think our side was worse, much worse even, than either the current Derby one or that Sunderland team.
I was @ that Coventry game - just awful.

We should be hoping for a repeat of 5th May 1979. The biggest day in Stoke's recent history with the 1-0 win at Notts County and the wild celebrations that followed. Not thinking about relegation before we've even got promoted !

Can anyone remember the Proud to be a Potter banner that they put up when it was obvious we were an embarrassment? Still proud to beat Arsenal and Man Utd :0

We hired a PR company, can't remember the name, and I think they came up with the idea for that banner.
If I'm not mistaken they also came up with the design for the pinstripe strip.
Presumably they're no longer in business?

I was one of the 6,930. Was also 14 and never expected that day that I'd be 37 and still waiting for us to get back up.
I remember telling everyone not to worry as it'd only be for one year!
Shows how much I knew.
