Sheffield United hitman Beattie is the subject of a £2.5million bid from Stoke City but the Potters look set to fall by the wayside with Newcastle and Blackburn Rovers entering the fray. Rovers boss Allardyce - sacked by the Toon last season - is set to join the bidding with Hull City also keeping tabs on a player who moved to Bramall Lane for £4million in August 2007. The Blades want at least £5m for their 30-year-old top marksman and Kinnear is keen to strike a deal.

If it is £5m then I hope so
Snippet I heard on radio stoke seemed to suggest that Utd were looking for a player exchange - fee not yet agreed

If Beattie & his agent start pimping himself about I imagine TP will tell him to go and get fucked, as he did with Carson and Gardner. He's stated many times he'll only sign players who want to come here, not just whoever pays the most.

Was he really at the game? I hope so.
Juliette Ferrington said on Radio 5 yesterday (from the Sheff Utd game) that Beattie definitely wasn't in Staffordshire, she'd heard it from a "very reliable source". The way she said it implied to me, "from the mouth of James Beattie". Ferrington is obviously from Stoke too so it might even have been some inside info from the club.
Although Radio 5 were reporting it all as a completed deal on Friday..

I spoke to someone from the club yesterday (not a steward, or a pie seller, or a program seller etc!!) who told me that a representative for Beattie had been expected to attend regarding paperwork issues etc, BUT that "no-one" had turned up??!!!
Hopefully this transfer has been delayed due to 'minor issues' and nothing more??

I don't think he'd turn down a return to Blackburn if they came in at the 11th hour.
Not so sure on Newcastle, even though they're a huge club.
Hopefully it's bull and he's in the bag. Sadly, I suppose until there's ink on a contract, there's always the potential for a Damien Francis-like hijack

Juliette Ferrington said that too, squeekster. That Beattie wasn't at Bramall Lane, but also definitely wasn't in Staffordshire.

If rumours are correct it's important for him to be able to commute from Manchester so with the better chance of first team football with us we still must be in with a very good chance even if Blackburn & Newcastle are sniffing.

He's from Blackburn though, isn't he? You'd think a return there would be pretty much ideal for him. If Santa Cruz goes, presumably Allardyce would see him getting a fair bit of action if he's interested in him? If he's very settled in Manchester, maybe he wouldn't see Newcastle as a great proposition in their current state of flux - especially if it means him uprooting. Hopefully it's all hypothetical and he's set on coming here - although I'd think long and hard about it if it's any more than £3-£3.5m.

Yes but the Blackburn connection may hold some weight as Man C are after Santa Cruz so it might well be a case of him choosing the team who he thinks will stay up!

Beattie was at home watchin the game. The Stoke side of the deal was all agreed and tied up on Thursday night, the only thing left to tie up was the settlement of his remaining contract at Sheffield utd. Everyone expected this to be compleated on Friday. As far as I understand it The deal will be rubber stamped and Beattie will be a Stoke player within the next day or so.

This is the same thing I hve heard in re: settlement on his contract. I'm not sure how long he as left on his current sheffield united contract...but if we are only paying 2.5million for him then I can't see why we can't pay of the rest of his contract, which might be where the 5 million pound mark comes from, I know he'll be on the same wages at Stoke as he was at Sheff united, and thats 30k Just done a bit of research, hes contracted until June 30 2010. So thats about 76 weeks..... 76 x 30k is 2.1 million... roughly
