Soi,
People aren't saying he's shit - but he is getting on at 34 and the best part of a million quid is a lot to be spunking on someone who barely plays for 90 minutes these days.

Good player in his day - would have been great for us 2/3 years ago but I'm not so sure this would be a good move for us right now, even in the short term, and can't believe the numbers mentioned for a bloke of his age who is out of contract in the summer. Spend 800k somewhere else, please!

But if that's the going price, and he would provide the midfield creativity and experience that could be the difference between automatic promotion or not, then 800k would be a sound investment for a £30 million profit.
You are not going to get a player of his proven ability for 800k. The price reflects his age.

A lot of money IF TRUE but would get 2 good seasons out of him
Experienced Prem/International.....................think we need 1 player like that in our team
Would be happy enough if comes off

Linx: Yes I totally understand and accept the concept of "going price" in footy - bonkers though it undoubtedly is. But I'd still prefer that type of money spent on someone perhaps a little younger and perhaps hungrier (not in the Parkin sense of "hungry"). Just my opinion.

Isn't Stelios' game based on pace though? How much has he got left in the tank at 34?

Hungry??????
Stelios: Anyone for Gyros?
Parkin: Does it come with Mayonaise?
TP: Triffic.... Stelios... just what i needed to feed the beast...... on and off the pitch!

Not debating his undoubted talent.
With every player purchase there is always some degree of risk with regard to perceived talent, attitude, injury/fitness and ability to fit into the team/dressing room.
Perhaps some kind of loan deal until the end of the season might be more suitable for us - but I wonder if the player might be looking for one last decent pay day (via a permanemt move) as a lot of them tend to do at his age?

more skill i think, got a good pass, and a good cross on him, quick feet still pretty pacy to be fair 800k isnt bad for a player of this standard we will notice his quality if he signs, it was only last year than everton were after him so ..... seems to me like a lee hendrie, but not a twat and with legs which arent spastic lik

Broadly with RV & mr grumpy ( ) Wouldn't show him the door obviously but wouldn't want to pay a fortune / over the odds either (no danger there though - it's Coates remember?) or think he's got not enough left in the legs.

Blimey realstokebloke - you don't half look like some fella who used to play for us in the 60's and 70's. Are you by any chance related?
PS Nice hairdo!

Lets see what happens. I don't personally think this one is a goer - especially if other clubs with silly money to burn are waiting in the wings. I know I'm dreaming here but I'd like somebody with his ability in the team who we'd paid maybe £500k for and was, say, 23/24 - or preferably somebody who had come through the ranks at the club (unlikely though that is at present). Yes I know - it's time for my medication and it's getting dark soon.

I think some people are missing my point - especially Soi.
Bolton are a shit team at Prem level that Stelios cannot get into, and has not been a regluar in their side for a while, but I never said he was not good enough
I said that he would be a good signing - I just dont think that if we are building for a team to survive in the Prem as some goon suggested earlier that he is the answer. But then again I dont think we are building a team to survive in the Prem, just one to get us there...

I've given up trying to judge potential signings e.g Danny Pugh - not in the Preston side and not that good in first few games...MOM against Newcastle and consistently good for last 6 / 8 matches. What do I know!?

Still can't see it happening but he'd be a top signing if we got him. He still seems to get around the pitch ok and he'd do a great job for a couple of years. £750k is nowt if he helps us to promotion is it?

domsmith, the fate of Griff, hendrie, etc is exactly what I want to avoid, and exactly what Stelios would be - at his age if we sign him he would probably last this season and maybe next, notwithstanding some sort of super-stamina. He is a short-term solution.
Although it is looking increasingly less likely, Whelan is the sort we want to be after, he can be a good player for us for a few years, and we don't have to look for a replacement every five minutes. If he decides he doesn't like it here or plays so well that a prem team offers big bucks then we get cash for him and decide when he leaves - a different matter to Hendrie who was never our player to begin with.
If we are talking about spending circa 1 million then it shouldn't be on an old timer with few recent games.
Like I said earlier I don't think Stelios will be any revelation in this division and I might think differently of someone of similar age who I rated higher.

i this is a stupid signing,800,000 for a 33 year old, 34 in April, and he will be on massive wages, and has only 2 years left max at our level, i think thats throwing money away, there are better and younger players out there, and on half his wages,

It's got to have been like this... Ring ring.. Ring ring.. Ring Ring.. GM "Hello" TP "Ha Ha Ha Ha" GM "Tony... is that you" TP "Yep... remember when no-one wanted you in football?" GM "Ok, who do you want?" TP "Darren Moore" GM "erm... he plays for Derby" TP "Ah.. playing hard ball are we! Zat Knight" GM "....Villa" TP "Oh...ooo ooo Tebily" GM "...Brum" TP "Have you got any big black defenders?" GM "You don't need anymore defenders!" TP "What you saying" GM "erm I've got a Greek lad" TP "..is he black" GM "erm he's dark skinned" TP "triffic, centre half aye?" GM "He is now" Excellent. ;D

nick, I know where you are coming from but today £800k is peanuts, it just takes us a while to get our heads around it after years of speding Jack Shit. Peterborough yesterday paid £400k for Norwich's third choice keeper!! Stelios would be a welcome signing in my eyes, experienced campaigner (we haven't got many) who can still do a great job for us.

Exactly Jamo, especially when you look how much Burnley and Sheff Utd bounced around on Akinbiyi, and he is and never was anywhere near as good as Stelios.

RAF, I can't really understand why fans worry about transfer fees to be honest (unless your club starts doing a Leeds which incidently £800k signings definitely aren't). If that's the market value and we're comfortable as a club in paying it let them get on with it. IF this did come off we will have a very experienced and talented European Champioship winner for £800k, sounds alright to me.

And to me. I doubt Coatsey will give him more than 10k a week anyway. If he comes great, we have got a class player for a couple of years, if not oh well, we'll look elsewhere.

I would walk up to Bolton and carry Stelios to Stoke. He is a superb creative player that can and will score goals. He would be ideal for Stoke. Tp get him in..

I was speaking to a Bolton season Ticket holder earlier and he would be very sad to see him leave. I said we need him to get us up and he said they need him to help keep them up. 800k to get us into the prem and help keep us there is a bargain in my eyes. + I can't think of any other championship club with a current Euro championship medal owning player! This guy has a winning mentality
