We are unlikely to have to contend with extremely technically gifted players, and thus, this post has little relevance to Stoke. TP is working within a division in which the approach from may sides is the 'hustle and bustle' type of style, in which their is little genuine quality on display.

Santa Cruz is a striker. Savage is a midfielder. So one isn't replacing the other is he? Incidentally, both are playing tonight, and are thus part of this "horrible hoofball" you describe.
Since Hughes has been there, he's led Blackburn (average side, small attendances remember) to a top 6 finish and three consecutive FA Cup semi-finals.
The skillful players they've "only recently acquired" - would these be Gamst, Bentley and McCarthy, who've all been there between 1 and 4 seasons between them?

He's been signing proper quality since he arrived though Mugglers - Gamst, Bentley, Nelson etc.
The real point is though, they've signed these cloggers and play such horrible stuff, according to you, yet Hughes has led them to relative success with it for a club of their size.
