Well he can certainly talk the talk, let's hope he can walk the walk as well. We've had so many false dawns so I'll keep my scepticism is my top pocket from now, ready and waiting. Here's hoping it all goes well because there is so much hanging on this latest change of direction and we have finally zigzagged to the promised land. I'm not holding my breath!

If the manager wants to keep the ball and play between the lines then one of the deeper midfielders needs to be more of a "playmaker". Moran would be perfect for the role as he's always looking for the ball and is comfortable receiving it in tight spaces. Not sure about that - he looks more like an attacking midfielder sitting just behind the front players. Seko's profile suggests he might be the player you are talking about. From what I have read about Seko I agree, seems to be a deep lying interceptor who can spray the ball about. Calm and comfortable on the ball with a good passing range.

It could be close to Christmas before we establish a core team.

"If every time the ball comes to you, you lose it, it doesn't matter who it is we cannot get momentum in the game, all the time press, press, press and then we're tired. We need to keep it, boys. We are a ball possession team. This is where we are going now. We need to have the ball"

“We are a ball possession team,we need to have the ball” Interesting line from the training video It's a recipe for disaster. Any fan who has been to the ground more than once can tell you clearly the reaction the crowd gives, on the back of anything over 2 number passes which are sideways or backwards. It isn't that I disagree with the new head coach. But one think I do know is what our fans are like. They will not accept prolonged periods of time where we keep the ball with sideways and backwards passes. Let alone "prolonged", they have no patience for any small amount of ball retention. They want it played forward and they demand it quickly. I can't see it ending well.

They couldn’t trap a slow moving bag of cement.

We don't have the players for possession football. Difficult to play possession football when a lot of the players second touch is a tackle! Any press on us and they go to pieces because technically, they aren’t good enough. That’s going to be his biggest challenge. Can these players actually do what he wants? Can he train them to not play like the ball is a hot potato when the pressure is on? I think it’s a big ask with the players we have.

The thing is, a good coach should be able to identify strengths and weaknesses too. As much as we all want him to implement his own style, playing possession based football with this lot is a recipe for disaster. The few times we've looked decent this season have been when Koumas and Manhoef are running at defences and creating space with their movement. I'd be honing in on that as a strength.

Have they really been asked to play possession football as a team before? There have been a lot of passes across the back, mainly it would seem because nobody wants to take responsibility and then a lot of sideways passing on the edge of the opponents box. Watching the training video I noticed that there was no standing on the ball looking for a pass then passing sideways. There was a lot of movement. I don't think we have ever played a style of football to draw opponents out. We have always been very static. The number of times I have been thinking "Somebody please move, don't just stand waiting!" We take an age over throw ins because one player moves towards the ball but nobody else moves.

Odds on us conceding a goal from a suicide pass in our own box tomorrow??!

We don't have the players for possession football. I hope that was him trying to trick the opposition rather than being serious! He’s not telling the players to aimlessly play around the back, he’s clearly trying to say that if we keep giving the ball back to the other team by going long to nobody too often, like we did against Hull we will very quickly tire having to chase the opposition around all game.

I suppose the only way we can see mate is from what is in front of us. I was quite encouraged by some of the first half last week and trying to get the ball forward quicker on the ground. I hope it's that kind of keeping the ball, rather than building from the back and slow possession which I think would be a disaster.

Which is absolutely fine... obviously the only thing that matters is what's in front of us during the game. I remember watching a training video from SS in the summer where he was saying something like "let's not give the opposition opportunities." So probably need take them all with a pinch of salt!

Why does everyone on this thread think having possession is a bad thing?
Controlling possession in the right areas you will create more chances, people are confusing possession with passing it around the back 4 on the edge of our own box, having possession in their half is completely different, which is what he is saying.
If you go out your way to boo your own club when we are keeping possession of the ball your probably better off watching another sport

The question is how do we get it to Koumas and Manhoef so they have space to run at a defence. If we just send it long without a target man, we'll get nowhere so we rely on hitting teams on the break. The problem with that is you don't have the ball for vast periods of the game or teams don't commit as much resulting in a boring game with few chances.

Not many teams do outside of the premier league to be fair. Big Noel Blake last night said he was amazed that he see's L1 and L2 sides trying to play from the back. Liverpool often play long balls out of defence to their quick players and are very good at it.

Not too fussed about the possession thing, it's trying something different. He saw against Hull we tried the pressing game and we were cooked after 30 mins. Adapting the play to the situation, lets hope the players can actually pass and hold possession.

That's what possession football is when you've got low confidence players. It's dominated our play for years. Players at this level don't have the touch or speed of thought for it and what you end up with is an utterly turgid route 1 football. Pass, pass, pass until opposition are back in shape and then hoof it to no one. I don't want a return to Pulis ball but at least it was high intensity and didn't allow the opposition to settle.
