Can't believe the amount of stick Burger is getting for yesterday. The amount of ground he covered in stopping Allen and Torp getting any kind of foothold in the game was absolutely key to our first half performance and domination. He was superb. the back heel to set up that chance Manhoef/Tezgel fluffed between them was a thing of beauty too

From what I seen I really don’t see this lad as a 6/DM. He absolutely screams Laurent replacement to me. In September I think we end up with: Burger Lawal Cundle Some people will disagree but after our form without burger and him stinking the place out yesterday he’s not a guaranteed starter. I’d love to get that Wierdu fella for DM. He looks exactly the type of player I want at DM and the fact he can cover CB too. I’ve been critical of Laurent but thought he was excellent yesterday and the pick of our CMs. Having heard SS saying he was vice captain I think he’ll stay and it’s his place to lose. With the number of games we need plenty of CMs as it’s a long season. I can see us having a pool of Burger Lawal Laurent Thompson Sidibe for the 2 spots With Cundle (hopefully he’ll sign) Baker fighting for the AM spot I can see Johnson leaving as I think his opportunities will be limited. Things are shaping up nicely just need more depth at AWF, CB, RB and a STR who scores that’ll play 30+ games a season I think come Sept I’m hoping we’ll be looking at Johansson Junior / Hoever Gibson Wilmot / new Bocat Lawal Burger / Laurent Cundle (hopefully) Manhouf new (someone like Cannon or Stansfield) Bae

“Stinking out the place” is very harsh. First half he was fine and was part of a unit that collectively won the midfield battle which has happened all too rarely for us in the last few seasons. But he always tries to cover so much ground that he’s invariably knackered after an hour and it really showed in that period in the second half when Coventry got on top. The first minute is kind of case in point. Goes flying into a needless tackle that he was lucky to not get booked for, leaving a big gap which Coventry exploited, then tracked back brilliantly to make a fantastic block. Sometimes I just want to tell him to calm down and let his ability on the ball do the talking and stop trying to be everywhere at once. Maybe it is/was harsh. He was visibly our worst player yesterday. I do agree with you, he’s like a lost puppy chases everything everywhere. And he’s a far better player than he shows by doing this. Totally agree I've said for a while now he needs to play his game and not to try to play everyone else's,I can't fault him for trying but you can try to much then look bad when it doesn't work for you

The use of him gets stupider by the minute. Yesterday he was at the tip of a 2:1 midfield. You’d be hard pressed to find somewhere on the pitch he’s less suitable to play bar the forward line. Looks like a cunning plan to sabotage the value of one of the most valuable assets in your squad to me. Barking.

I thought he was decent too. And Laurent. Thompson did his job steadily. No bad performances but we did place a few careless passes at time. Early season rustiness I guess.

So that’s interesting if true, if we are planning on keeping Baker and Laurent I’d probably try and offer new deals too, just to protect the asset as I do feel we have some upward momentum as a club. Yeah like you say it’s a long season and with how demanding Schumacher and his system seems to be you can see him burning through players unless they are real athletes. I agree, Johnson really is the odd one out and if we can swap him for either a pacy left winger or Weirdu (don’t know why but I REALLY like the look of him) we start to look quite balanced and full of athletes (bar Baker and burger which might be abit harsh but neither can match the demands for 90 mins). I think your team is about right. It now basically all depends on what ST do we get in. They HAVE to hit the ground running and they HAVE to score 10-15 goals with 5-10 assists.

I think Burger can play any of the three roles in CM tbh. He’s hard to work out. I’m still not completely sure what his best position is.

To me he looks nothing like an AM, the role takes away his best attributes and requires him to do the stuff that he’s worst at but at the moment apart from moving Junho inside I can’t really suggest anyone on our books who’d definitely make a better fist of the position. Baker obviously has the potential output but his lack of intensity is a real handicap. The return of Pearson will complicate things even further another expensive (in wage terms) deep lying midfielder that you can’t really afford to just ignore and allow to rot until you can move him on. And Sidibe how you get him on the pitch for serious minutes with that glut in front of him god only knows.

Even better if we get Cundle. I think that we might have enough for a top half finish.

I think for most if not our entire time in this division (this time) we’ve had a squad capable of that and better if it could score goals. The rest of the window is going to be crucial to see if we can finally answer that one most important question.

If Laurant is vice captain, can't see anyway he will be gone. There was a situation late in the game, which for me summed up Baker and Laurant. I think it was Eccles who was moving across the pitch from right to left, Baker put in a lump attempt of a tackle which was brushed off, Laurant went in half heartedly, looked as if the man was clear, but somehow Laurant came out with the ball. They both have too many of those types of challenges.

Not a strength of his game and never will be and doesn't have to be. Laurent was brilliant yesterday. As others have said if you believe he was bad yesterday then you have a clear agenda that will never be changed.

I didn't say Laurant was bad yesterday, but has too many off games for us to progress as a top 10 or potential play off team.

And that one challenge could have led to a goal. He just for me and it's all about opinions, loses too many of his midfield battles.

Apologies if this has already been posted, but having never seen him play this is worth a watch: To be fair he looks the fucking class. The second goal he scores is one hell of a strike. Only concern is it looks like he uses his physicality and pace to get him out of a lot of situations which isn’t going to be any where as easy in the championship. If he looks like Seedorf and and plays like Seedorf….

He certainly has the tools and he seems to find space and hit it, as said before the championship is a lot quicker and you don't get that sort of space but he looks like he'd have no problem making the step up in my opinion.
Also why has the OP changed the title of the thread?

From the clips he does look like a Laurent replacement rather than a proper DM. He got 6 goals last year which also suggests he’s not really a sitter.
I’d like to see a midfield with Burger as the 6 and then Lawal and another (hopefully Cundle but Laurent would do) as the 8s providing a decent goal threat.
That would then leave Thompson, Pearson, Baker, Johnson and Sidibe as rotation options. Probably at least one too many so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Johnson leave and one of either Baker or Laurent.
