If women's Olympic boxing continues to be at the very poor skill level that we just witnessed, then good riddance, regardless of recent controversy. Olympic boxing actually is amateur level. I don't watch boxing so couldn't comment on skill levels. Remember when all of the Olympics had to be comprised amateurs? Do we really need pro golfers and NBA players taking home a gold?

Swe 🇸🇪 4 gold (swimming x2, pole vault, beach volleyball) 4 silver 3 bronze
Most in Scandinavia I think. The goal was 10 medals.

Do we really need pro golfers and NBA players taking home a gold? I was too young to remember but think pro is best. Especially in the athletics, I love seeing the peak of human achievement. Watching old clips, it sometimes looks a bit pathetic when runners fall over on something like the 400m flat. We might not have had Usain Bolt if athletics was amateur - a lot of athletes used to quit after one successful Olympics because they couldn't afford to continue. There were loopholes, like the Finnish runners who got highly paid for minimal factory work and instead spent a lot of time training, which the Soviet Union took to even further extremes. I think the latter is a big reason most sports went pro, along with the economic benefits from having the world's biggest stars competing (the tennis federation refused to compete in the Olympics until pros were allowed, for example). Football only allows under 23's (+3 overage) in men's football because FIFA doesn't want Olympic football to eclipse the World Cup. I heard recently that the salary of British Olympic athletes is a maximum of £28,000 a year (from the National Lottery funding), so it's still hardly lucrative for such a short career unless you win medals or get additional sponsorship. I'm not a fan of golf in the Olympics though, and basketball seems pretty pointless given the USA should win it every time. Well done Argentina in Athens!

I forgot tennis fuck it off its not the pinnacle - the slams are murray would 100% swap his rio gold for a slam (maybe his london one too but i accept being london its a bit more sentimental to him) still tennis has no place in the modern games justin rose would 100% swap his rio gold for a green jacket

So long as the players are motivated to want to win medals and the crowds are motivated to attend, then I'm fine with them being in. If it gets to the stage where Tennis players and Golfers are choosing to prioritise other events over the Olympics then that is the time to remove them. You could see from Novak Djokovic's emotional reaction that winning a gold medal meant a lot to him even though he has won many grand slam events.

I agree with you that Squash should be in but I don't think there is any need for the other sports to be removed as although I get your point that they don't need it, they do enhance it. However we will probably have to agree to disagree on this.

I'm slightly biased here because of a long association with hockey. Olympic exposure has benefited the sport greatly, I watched our club grow from one men's team to its current status of 5 men's,4 ladies, junior section and a half decent veterans lot. There are international competitions but Olympic gold is the pinnacle of the sport.

Djokovic has rated his Olympic Gold as the best moment of his career. I agree with your point about it being great that so many sports have the Olympics as their pinnacle and what that comes with, but I don't necessarily think other sports should be dropped. They help attract the eyeballs which is what leads to more exposure for less popular sports.
