Relatively neutral view on paper at the moment I don't think it is - might turn out that way on grass in the coming month though but a lot of it is potential at the moment. Looking at the 2006 squad and this one my XI would be Pickford / Robinson - much of a muchness Neville / Walker - I'd go Neville as think Walker's legs are nearly going but debatable Ferdinand over Stones Terry (easy) Cole (easy) Carrick (absolutely wasted) over Rice Gerrard Beckham Bellingham over Lampard (argument about Scholes though) Foden, Palmer etc over Cole Rooney over Kane Trying to shoehorn Lampard and Gerrard into the same midfield 4 was just bat shit mental - what a waste! Carragher and Campbell were the two subs for centre half and you’d probably play one of them alongside stones if you had the choice now. Left back was Wayne Bridge, he’d also been consistently in the team. Hargreaves in midfield as well. But then you get to the attacking replacements of Downing, Lennon, Walcott, Crouch and you’d love to have some of the options we’ve got now. We really should’ve done better back then all things considered.

Arguably the best since 1970, if you ignore the back 5 So 'no' then 😀

I think in terms of the ‘team’ being potentially the best we’ve brought into a tournament, then yes probably. The older team with scholes, StevieG, Lamps and Beckham etc had probably more ‘better players’ but it wasn’t a very balanced team with too many of the same type of player out of position or having to do more defensive duties than they were used for doing for their club. ….. in my opinion We are shit defensively though. That's what will do us.. True. The defence isn’t the best and needs Rice et al protecting them throughout the tournament.

Sven era/now team
4231
Pickford - just, nobody really stands out Walker - Neville was very good, but doesn’t suit this formation Terry - easily our best centre half Stones - easily our second best, Ferdinand massively overrated Cole - no question here, one of the best LBs in my lifetime so far Rice - shoe in as the more defensive of the 2 Gerrard - though in a couple of years this will be Wharton, he looks the dogs dangly bits Saka - though Beckham was brilliant for England, like Neville he doesn’t suit this formation Bellingham - no need to comment Foden - better centrally but can’t think who else to play LW Kane - Rooney didn’t do it at tournaments

the defence is a definite worry for me, That being said Foden, Kane, Bellingham are arguable 3 of the most inform players in the world right now.
The 'Golden generation' was great but people easily forget the level of other countries around that time
Brazil for example, i'm not sure other than maybe France I think we have the strongest squad

i think the thing is we can now finally compete on a technical level. I watched a little clip of the England team doing a rondo the other day and it was gratifying to see how competent they were at it. It felt like finally we’d caught up.
You can go player by player and make good arguments for the golden generation but in terms of the overall level of technique - control in tight spaces, short passing, keeping cool, not losing the ball etc - this lot are streets ahead.
(We’ll still go out on pennos obvs)

Scholes should have been the key player in that team neither Lampard or Gerrard, who were both great players, should have been in the starting XI.

Going forward there is alot of of quality there and some great individuals.
Come up against teams that take their chances it won't be great as their isn't Amy proper defenders in there.

It's all about Soutgate and how he sets the team up. Personally i would just go for it with rice sitting behind a 4 of Bellingham, Saka, Foden and Palmer ( or poss Gordon). kane up top. Watikins if he has an issue. Wlaker at RB and Stones are fine... but relying on a half fit luke shaw or Trippier on his wrong side at LB is a worry.
As for the 2nd centre back.... who knows??! Personally i thin he will go Gehui. Not the best selection i must say. Brathwaite is the one i would have picked.

I think Bellingham and Foden are on a different level to pretty much any previous England players.
The question is can they deliver on the unique stage of international tournament football.
I also think that the overall quality of our players is better and we’re more capable of playing the type of possession based controlled football that wins tournaments. That’s down to many things but ultimately I think the influence of foreign coaches like Pep, Klopp, Mourinho etc has slowly but surely changed the footballing culture here so we’re now more comfortable playing the style of football that makes you a real contender.

Miles off. We have an abundance of exciting individuals in attack, but the rest of the team looks awful. Defensively, it’s a shit show. And the problem is Southgate will try and be pragmatic. We can’t defend and it’ll stifle the attacking talent we have.

Stones is world class. Walker would get in a world 11 at RB. Guehi/Konsa are perfectly suited to international football and are quick and strong. Shaw/Trippier more than good enough for LB. I genuinely don't get where this narrative comes from.

It will likely end in gallant failure in a semi final or final and will result in another 2 years in charge for Southgate so we can repeat the process all over again.

I think the problem has always been appointing squeaky clean yes men over someone who might speak out of turn and you never know, win something.
Eddie Howe I would imagine is next

Only rate walker out of the back 5... and hes nearly past it. He isn't going to go from regular starter for the winners of the Premier League to past it before July is out though is he?

I think this team is better than the golden era one. Terry or Ferdinand would be in alongside Stones and Cole would play
The others such as Gerrard, Scholes and Rooney all under performed for England.
It's also worth mentioning that other squads had superior players too, France had Zidane and Makalele, Portugal had Figo and Ronaldo and their players did perform

You mean the one with the best tournament record since Alf Ramsey by a country mile? Fabio Capello has the best win rate ever It doesn't matter much if you don't win anything, really . They're a good side to watch but so they should be He's certainly had the tools to do it.

I think the problem has always been appointing squeaky clean yes men over someone who might speak out of turn and you never know, win something. Eddie Howe I would imagine is next Capello? Allardyce? even Hoddle? He definitely spoke out of turn. Who are the current great managers who speak out of turn? One problem in this country is if someone is appointed and they have something on them, the media will hound them out.
