Yep I was at the final They beat The Netherlands 1-0 opening game. Ireland won their opening game by the same scoreline ...was at that one . Netherlands only went through by a clearly offside goal in the last few minutes of their final group game v Ireland. Russia were ok but never in the final and didn't really impress despite getting to the final Yes that weird spinning goal for Holland against Ireland. Saw that goal the other day and I’m still a bit perplexed as to how it found its way into the net. USSR had a good side in those days, they played well in Mexico a few years before in the World Cup. That was the one. Was a pause in the stadium as evetyone seemed to be expecting a flag. Ireland had a goal disallowed for a foul on the keeper, Paul McGrath. Very harsh USSR had some great players that era but didn't impress in the 88 tournament but like W Germany in 90, seem to stumble to the final without playing that well. Were very good in Mexico, yep. |

Never in doubt that one Ireland played Russia...Soviet Union off the park. Denied a clear pen To be fair, England managed one of their 2 goals V the Soviet Union in a 3-1 loss. Unlucky in all 3 losses perhaps England were beyond shit v USSR and Adams got destroyed by Van Basten v Holland, got what we deserved, nothing v Ireland though despite not playing well we should have scored 5 or 6 against a terrible Ireland (on the day) but one of those days where nothing would go in Oddly was Ireland's worst performance by a mile but the game they won |

Pope meets everyone and at the end asks who the keeper is - Jack Charlton points to Bonner. Pope says he was a keeper in his youth and will be paying special attention to watching him during the game. In the shower after Bonner is inconsolable after he spilled it for their winner. Charlton's picking them all off the floor telling them how well they've done and says 'come on now Packie get yourself in the shower - nobody's blaming you' As Packie trudges off to the shower Jack Charlton sparks up a fag, takes a drag, looks at Andy Townsend and with a smile says 'bet the fucking Pope would have saved it!' |

I suppose many hoped Joselu would come on late in the CL final and score a goal - or two - to make one last lasting impression on the Spanish manager to make him regret his decision. Well he did come on very late and wasn't needed to score, but Stoke now has another CL winning alumni, so congratulations to all Stokies! As for Joselu not making the final cut that's too bad, but who among the five selcted strikers would you leave out to make room for him...? |
