Simply remarkable what's happening at that club this season. I am a younger fan I'm wondering IF they go up, when the last time a team got back to back promotions from League 1 then Championship either via playoffs or automatic to the Prem?

Southampton were the last to do it under Adkins according to the commentary today.
They're such a well drilled outfit.
Thought Southampton were the better side today but Ipswich found a way to win. That dozy ginger bollocks Ed Sheeran left before winner as well.

I think Southampton were the last. Promoted from div 1 in 2010/11 and straight up to the Premier the following season.

Remember Sheff Utd doing it in the late 80s
Bassett then kept em up for a few years on a shoestring

They really looked like they might have run out of steam but bloody hell they’re right there. Hope they win the title

Sad what happened with Nigel Adkins. He produced absolute brilliance at Southampton and prior to that did an incredible job with Scunthorpe leading them to the top half of the championship.
Since getting harshly fired from Southampton he just never recovered.

So you’re not old enough to remember Ipswich doing this before and then winning the title in the top division?

The year before Southampton, Norwich did it under Paul Lambert. Wonder what happened to him.

I'd called Ipswich as my suprise package of the season and the team to watch out for back last summer. Sadly I'd only documented it on here & not with a tenner at the Bookies 🙄😬

I can only gawp in sheer admiration, and a heavy load of jealousy and embarrassment on our part. Every season we've been back in this division we have finished bottom half. Ipswich have been out of the Championship for the majority of that time and now in their first season back (after finishing below Schumacher's Plymouth last season) are absolutely blitzing this league.
Fair play to them. They are everything we wish we could be, with a top class manager and setup.

Pretty sure Northampton went from 4th division to first division in consecutive seasons and then did it all in reverse
Early 70s?

Has a team ever won two titles in a row? Ipswich as already said above under a certain Alf Ramsey, not sure what became of him? 60/61 Division 2 Champions (for younger viewers equivalent of the Championship) 61/62 Division 1 Champions (Premier League equivalent) Yes there was football before the Premier League!

Northampton weren't in the top division in the 70s Think you might be thinking Carlisle Went from 3rd to division 1 in consecutive season. Were top of the old first division for a while then went down two divisions again.

As a bitter and jealous bastard, I find it hard to want them to win the title - but I don't want Leeds or Leicester to win it either!
I thought Ipswich would get found out in the second half of the season but they've rallied again.
They play relatively simple football - aggressive, quick, hard working. Absolutely superb to watch. They're literally everything we're not.

Fair play to them. They are everything we wish we could be, with a top class manager and setup. They were in the doldrums as a club for a very long time. They’ve got it right recently but it follows a long, slow period of decline for them that saw them drift from the Prem to League One and then struggle to get out of it. There are a lot of parallels with us there, except they sank deeper than we have (yet) done. For much of that period we would have been seen as an example of a well-run club and their fans would have been justifiably jealous of us. Eventually we’ll get it right again. We should look at Ipswich as an example of what’s possible with the right set-up in place and not as the embodiment of some unattainable dream.

I'm not sure people get Ipswich have actually thrown a lot of money at the Issue since the takeover . They bust the bank by league one standards its not to decry their achievement but its not success on a shoestring its success on good deployment of decent resources. Still something we can only gazs enviously and compare our recruitment to theirs
