What's funny is that people are getting excited about a temporary appointment to a strategic role just because the appointment is a popular ex player. I'm sure everyone wishes SJW well but it is a weird decision. Given Martin was effectively brought in by Neil (which in itself was odd) the sensible thing would have been to sack Martin, make a more considered decision about the Technical Director role, sack Neil and then appoint a new coach/manager. What the club have done is completely back to front. This might have helpful side effects - effectively Martin has become the lightening rod for all the shit that would have been directed at Schumacher and buys him more time and as a popular ex player SJW may up the feel good factor. However in terms of recruitment to a strategic role it makes no sense whatsoever. It’s very odd. Neil brought in Martin but the latter is being blamed for the shambles in the summer. If AN had no say in the recruitment process other than stipulate to Martin what he required, then was AN unnecessarily sacked when the blame rests with Martin? But there could have been other factors which contributed to Neil's sacking, or, at that time the club still believed in the recruitment and felt it was Neil's inability to manage this group, and only now realised that the recruitment was a big part of the problem. It's not either, or too. Poor recruitment and bad management both have been evident.

Best of luck to SJW. Welcome back to the madhouse. Let us all hope that everyone gets on board and we can all sort out the mess we all find ourselves in. Goarrrrrrrrn Jon.

I think there is a misunderstanding here. That part of the article is referring to Tricky Ricky effectively cleaning house behind the scenes ... not in terms of recruitment.

However in terms of recruitment to a strategic role it makes no sense whatsoever. As many have pointed out..interim is the key word here. It is that word that makes it make sense The fact it is an interim appointment makes it even less sense. This is a strategic role. The impact of strategy is felt in months and years and takes a long time to plan and implement. An interim Technical Director hasn't got the time to plan and implement strategy and potentially won't be around to see it through anyway. At best the club has appointed someone who is liked and doesn't do much - a bit like young Mr Grace in Are You Being Served. However in terms of fulfilling the remit of a Technical Director SJW is a lame duck and the club won't have any effective strategic direction until a permanent appointment is made. Also who gets excited about the appointment of backroom staff? The only reason people are getting excited about this is because it's SJW - who actually gives a fuck about a Technical Director? It's the sort of job for a competent, boring, faceless bureaucrat. Being excited about this makes it even more weird. I understand the sense of appointing a temporary coach - they can have an impact over a short timescale. That isn't the case for a Technical Director. It's a weird decision all round.

No one would have been better than someone. This is a pr move to appease the gullible masses. It is but he should be involved in the club in some shape or form anyway as should Whelan. Support them and help them grow and still be a part of our club. They both represent the very best of what it is to be a Stoke player. They are great role models and you know what you are going to get. Walter's will give 1000% in any role he is given, it's good to have him back at Stoke even if it is for Jon to ease some of the pressure from the fans off himself. He just needs to put someone who has ground level experience of what it takes to manage and build a team/squad. An ex manager would be better placed to support our coach or manager going forward. We should be going after MON in my view to be director of football at our club, he knows the club and i think he could put this club back on track. There are other people who could do it who have similar experience but he would be my choice.

It was widely discussed amongst their fans there'd been a fall-out even before he left. Sounds like 2 and 2 equals at least 5

Let's somehow find a way to get Peter Hoekstra, Mickey Thomas, Bojan and any other fondly remembered player involved too. In fact, Stoke should just fire all the commercial, media, retail, medical, administrative and finance staff and replace them all with former players. If Des Backos is not appointed club doctor (despite a complete lack of any kind of medical training) then the ownership have will have failed.

Yes. What gets me is that some folk are stil not onside with this.
JC has been proactive and replaced clusternuts with an interim appointment. Icing on the cake .... a super hero.
They've got time now to have a look around and decide next steps.
This appointment is not going to change much other than perhaps a bit of positivity around the place and Steven may be able to breathe a little easier.
Could be a turning point.
Let's hope we can get something from Cardiff and regroup for a rip-roaring atmosphere against Carrick and Co.

Ok - having read the stuff about the toxic atmosphere created by Martin I sort of get the temporary appointment of SJW. Sounds to me like he's there to purge the bad feeling and bring the club together.
At the moment they aren't after a Technical Director - which is a dry, technical role - they want a likeable character who can heal wounds. Fair enough - and if it is as bad as it sounds fair play for taking action.

If Des Backos is not appointed club doctor (despite a complete lack of any kind of medical training) then the ownership have will have failed. I'm a bit taken aback as you and I seem to have similar viewpoints, but I'm actually pleased that Jon Walters has been appointed temporarily. Or have I misread the intentions of your post? It seems to me that someone realised that Ricky had to go and go quickly. Not sure why it took so long but they reached the right decision in my opinion. Mr Dublin may well be looking over his shoulder too. I'd have done the same once I'd decided to get rid. But then if I couldn't appoint a successor immediately, I'd hand the reins to someone like SJW who lets face it, never knew the meaning of defeat, and walked through walls for SCFC. I remember him having a run of 3 penalty misses, and when the next opportunity came along, he was up for it again. My memory fails me.... did he miss that one too? Sorry, I digress. The point I'm trying to make is that I feel that there aren't enough ex-players like Walters in the backbone of the club. The sort of people that I think will be in that dressing room and sorting it out. I share a similar view of Glen Whelan and hope that he too might be able to play some sort of role within the club. I'm not saying that Walters or Whelan are suitable replacements for Tricky Ricky, but I am saying that in a temporary situation, there's nothing wrong with it, unless someone better is out there and available right now. In fact, with the benefit of hindsight, I'm not sure we wouldn't have been better off with SJW as Technical Director in the first place because I don't believe he, or I for that matter, could have done much worse! In contrast, I was always a big fan of Rory Delap, but could never quite see what he was giving to the club when he came in after retirement from playing. SJW and GW to me would be a different proposition. I think I've said before that the biggest irony for Oatcakers is that we all want the club to be successful.... we just can't agree on how that might happen!

Walters and Whelan are Stoke City royalty by the way they applied themselves here, we should be supporting them now their playing careers are over. Many players can't handle it when their careers end. They could be scouts, coaches, they could be trained up to be whatever we want them to be. They are the 2 biggest leaders at Stoke in my lifetime and should be looked after. They gave everything for this club whilst they were here I don't think there are many players that come close to them. We shouldn't support all ex players but these 2 are hugely respected and loved by the fans. Whatever position they were given you know what you would get from them, it's a no brainer to have them in the club, as role models they represent everything about Stoke. It's also good for current players to have people around the place who they can look up to, players that have played at the highest level and what it takes to get there.
