Stoke City Matches PPM (Aug 28, 2022) contracted Jun 30, 2025 50 1.28 Sunderland (Feb 11, 2022) - (Aug 27, 2022) 24 1.88 Preston North End (Jul 4, 2017) - (Mar 21, 2021) 191 1.39 Norwich City (Jan 9, 2015) - (Mar 10, 2017) 108 1.44 Hamilton Academical FC (May 25, 2013) - (Jan 9, 2015) 70 1.83 (excludes caretaker/U17 matches) Those stats certainly put a very different spin on things don't they? Just 59 points averaged out over a season. Current hit rate this season is further down on that at 1.2 - or 55 points a season. You can't offer many excuses for that return in fairness.

We will be in mid table at least by Christmas I'm pretty confident of that, we're a totally different out fit now. We've brought in good players with qualities hand picked by the manager to play a style and a brand of football he's already promoted two teams with. The fans asked for root and branch, the owners have done the root and branch, the fans asked us to be braver in the foreign market and the owners have been braver in the foreign market, they've even changed the recruitment team in hopes of giving us a helping hand in success rates of these foreign transfers and future deals. The fans want a pressing, hard working team that scores goals, this is exactly what Alex Neil intends to do when the players have settled, weve specifally hand picked players to play just like that. I don't know what else some people expect. Wanting all the changes and foreign signings then not wanting to give it time to bed in and start to produce. It's about time the fans cut a bit of slack and have a bit of faith that we are going to be moving in the right direction. What is the rush to get back to the Premiership anyway, this league is far more balanced and even, enjoy the ride The rush to get back to the Prem is the reason he was poached, paid big money to come here and given the budget and free reign to sign so many players This league is awful, the football is terrible, painful to watch. Again, you're getting angry with those who have no faith in him but backing up your argument with blind hope vs fact. I hope you're right but fear another Rowett scenario , lots of players in and no product at the end of it. The difference being for me though that there are some good players here for someone more capable to work with should it come to that and think it will by Xmas Someone more capable than a manager with two promotions under his belt already who has just spent the summer bringing in a whole new squad to his specifications? Who is this mythical genius that we as a championship club can sign? Why hasn't everybody else signed them. This is a competitive league, nobody has a devine right to achieve anything. Imagine being in the trenches with certain posters droning on, I'd shoot them before I become clinically depressed. There is only a couple of facts, we have a whole new squad and they need time to bed in as half of them are foreign and they don't even know each other. You can't expect to hit the ground running on opening day and storm the league, where you call me blind hope, you have unrealistic expectations. Neil was dealt a shit Sandwich, we were not particularly good at anything because the players were a miss assembled mess containing little quality, you'd need a miracle worker to get a tune out of that excuse for a squad. The slate should be clean as it's a whole new set up. Neil only left Sunderland because of the understanding he could restructure the squad in summer. Nobody would have done anything with the crap we had last season, it was about staying in the league and getting to summer

I made no comment when I posted it as each will draw their own conclusions. He's admitted this is the first time he's taken over and had to build the squad himself (probably true for the vast majority of managers). Sunderland, over a short course, seems to be a positive blip. He did a good job to varying degrees at every club he’s managed prior to us. Out of interest I checked on Rowett's PPG: Burton 1.60 Birmingham 1.49 Derby 1.60 Stoke 1.34 Millwall 1.46 Seems to go down the pan when they get to ST4 Pep come on down: Barca 2.36 Bayern 2.41 Man C 2.34 Stoke 1.24

He spent about £50 odd million getting to 1.34PPG and AN got 1.28PPG spending nothing. That's like about £8.5M per 0.01 PPG of progress. Fookin hell promotion is going to be bloody expensive.

I think we'll run hot and cold until Xmas at least. We've demonstrated already we are capable of battering teams and also losing as a result of defensive lapses and an inability to turn possession into goals. I think that's going to be the pattern for the first half of the season until we bed in and the best combination of players starts to emerge. If we are mid table come Xmas there is nothing to stop us making a bid for a play off place should we get some consistency in the second half of the season. I really think we have the quality in the squad and it's all a matter of forging an effective team. We will be in mid table at least by Christmas I'm pretty confident of that, we're a totally different out fit now. Time will tell. What amazes me is the number of people on this board who know why AN came to us, know what he is thinking, know what happened that we signed and moved on a player in about a month. Some of them even know the instructions that he has given individual players. It's all bullshit, just like talking about the manager's net spend. The money he got for Souttar,Brown and Tymon was a present from MON. What does bother me is all these undisclosed fees that one poster (another Psychic) tells us are easy to decipher and itemise. And the obvious flaws in our squad after the manager had 12 months to think about what he was going to do, while he was just going through the motions last year as another Mystic Meg has told us. What are these guys on?

Well I don't agree, I think it's far from conclusive and too early into a new season to draw those conclusions. We've got a whole new spine, you just havn't give it time to adjust to new surroundings because your mind is made. For me Travers, Mcnally, Pearson, Burger, Wesley looks a pretty solid spine. People mention Mcnally and make the assumption we've gone soft at the back. Coventry fans loved Mcnally and wanted him back, they reached the play-offs with him playing. A fully fit Pearson is a pain in the backside for opposition, that's why Stoke fans wanted him, after him playing against us. Burger's player description is he gets stuck in as we've already seen glimpses of, Basel fans pissed to see him sold, he's 6ft 3 and worn the captains armband everywhere he'd played for, he allready looks like he wants to orchestrate. Wesley is a £22m unit that offers strength and link up play, Mmaee has barely even started. Oh and Travers is very highly rated, that's the spine you moan we're lacking. You're just not prepared to be patient for them to bed in as a team because your narrative is set in stone. Writing it off as you have as early have you have is ridiculous, not even two weeks after the window has shut ( or a week and a half) in a window where even the last day played a part. All you ever do is drone on about how bad things are, why do you even follow Stoke, where does your fulfilment come from? All thus " I travel 350 miles weekly" blah blah blah, absolute tosh, with the negative vibe you mass produce you'd be suicidal at the first traffic light cue, god help the passengers, theyd be addicted to valium by the end of the first half of the journey. It's not fair to others your constant droning.. Oh and now you've got a Junho, where if you actually attended the Preston game could clearly see he's going to gave no problem complimenting the new scfc spine. He looks a fine athletic player who will cope with the physical demands no problem. Alex Neil has completed two more promotions allready than you ever will and he's a young manager, no doubt still constantly learning. He's got over the line twice by scoring goals and winning games, that's a fact. Tje players he brought in look exciting and we have signed pkayers to play an attacking game with a sprinkling of flair, what more do you want? We'd do very well to better that record with anybody else. There is a hell of a lot to be optimistic about this season

His overall record is average, he's another underdog manager. Attacking game? He basically shit the bed in our first two away games and went for a draw. He's done nothing in the game to suggest he can spend money and build a Promotion winning side at this level. I like some of the payers he signed, Burger, Vidigal look quality, but he's made a serious error in not getting a good centre-back and we need still a central striker. He also needs to get into Pearson because he is basically tossing it off. Unfit and a walking yellow card. Stoke City is a massive job - is AN up to it? Hopefully he is but I have my doubts.

Amen brother. Do you own a copy of one of my favourite books, How To Lie With Statistics? Nope. But I do know the proverb "Lies, damn lies, and statistics" "How to Lie with Statistics is a book written by Darrell Huff in 1954, presenting an introduction to statistics for the general reader. Not a statistician, Huff was a journalist who wrote many how-to articles as a freelancer. The book is a brief, breezy illustrated volume outlining the misuse of statistics and errors in the interpretation of statistics, and how errors create incorrect conclusions. In the 1960s and 1970s, it became a standard textbook introduction to the subject of statistics for many college students. It has become one of the best-selling statistics books in history, with over one and a half million copies sold in the English-language edition. Themes of the book include "Correlation does not imply causation" and "Using random sampling". It also shows how statistical graphs can be used to distort reality, for example by truncating the bottom of a line or bar chart, so that differences seem larger than they are, or by representing one-dimensional quantities on a pictogram by two- or three-dimensional objects to compare their sizes, so that the reader forgets that the images do not scale the same way the quantities do. The original edition contained illustrations by artist Irving Geis. In a UK edition, Geis' illustrations were replaced by cartoons by Mel Calman" If you ever stumble across a copy, it is so good.

It's ridiculous to include last seasons stats as it was a completely different team and to judge someone after 5 matches when some of the important players haven't played a full match yet and our brightest spark and top scorer has missed two is even more bizarre.

The original edition contained illustrations by artist Irving Geis. In a UK edition, Geis' illustrations were replaced by cartoons by Mel Calman" If you ever stumble across a copy, it is so good. Thanks! I see it's available on Amazon, so I'll definitely check it out!

It's ridiculous to include last seasons stats as it was a completely different team and to judge someone after 5 matches when some of the important players haven't played a full match yet and our brightest spark and top scorer has missed two is even more bizarre. The stats are the stats they won’t disappear. This is the same bollox as don’t judge a player until x amount of games. Everything and everyone is judged continually a poor start does not dictate a poor whole any more than a good start dictates continuing success but neither does a poor or good whole expunge what came before it. It’s a position that should only be taken by people who find it impossible to change their mind to reflect the here and now.

The only time Neil has had this type of money was at Norwich after promotion (a side that he didn't build) and it was a disaster. He played 433 at both Ipswich and Millwall two shit performances (well one and a half) however he didn't go for a draw in either game, that's simply incorrect He played 3 at the back at Millwall. Changed it at half time.......

Can't disagree with you but if for example in the admittedly unlikely scenario that we go up as Champions under Neil this year (or even next) do we still keep saying he's not that good, look at his stats for last season. Do Potter's awful stats at Chelsea diminish his impressive stats elsewhere? You have to look at the bigger picture as football isn't just about cold bloodied stats. If it was you wouldn't have unexpected results and Luton wouldn't have been promoted. I feel this season has been such a big reset that it is impossible yet to see where we will finish.

I disagree. It was a squad he was in charge for over 41 league games. Personally, I think AN sucks. However, he’s not going anywhere this season unless we fall to the bottom three.

It is impossible you're right but also convenient to forget an entire season. Any manager that goes into a new club inherits a team but doesn't excuse such a poor record over 12 months . They know the deal when they move there,Neil certainly did and happy to jump ship. He had a window previously and so far he's performed worse than managers who lost their jobs.

Part of the problem in football (and in life) is the 'instant' culture. No one has time for anything and everybody wants everything today. Managers and teams throughout the leagues are written off after a couple of games. I know it's an old example but Fergie wouldn't have been in a job at Utd if it was 2023 and not the late eighties or early nineties, lucky for him after 3 shit years of managing them Robins scored that goal and the rest is history. I believe AN was given the brief of 'do what you can until the summer' when the FP is sorted and we'll judge you 23/24 season when you have your team. In that respect, we shouldn't be making bold statements about the manager or the team because we just don't know yet - 17/18 new players at once is unprecedented. (although we definitely will judge thats life).

3 away games out the next 4 followed by 2 games against the promotion favourites:
Norwich City v Stoke City Huddersfield Town v Stoke City Stoke City v Hull City Bristol City v Stoke City Stoke City v Southampton Leicester City v Stoke City
He's got to get a tune out of the team particularly away from home or he could find himself under real pressure going into the next international break in 4 weeks time.......
