Just stumbled on this article: www.mancity.com/features/lmydebut-trevorfrancis/Didn’t realise that it was not just in December 1988 that Man City brought so many to The Vic. Were they housed in Stoke End and Butler Street like in 88? Wonder if those two games are the biggest away ever followings at Stoke?

Was at the game and remember Francis being very good. There was a large Man City following but I don’t recall it being half the ground as suggested in the article. Memory can be quite selective I suppose.

Just thinking about large followings in the 70s at Stoke.. Sunderland in cup and again first game of season brought hordes . Villa massive following 70s and again 80s year they won the league . Obviously the two Manchester clubs. As regards exact numbers someone else might know . All over 7000 I would think.

Got a real dislike of Trevor, his commentary on Stoke was so bias it was unreal.

Got a real dislike of Trevor, his commentary on Stoke was so bias it was unreal. Yes, remember hearing clips in the PL days. Didn’t he incur the wrath of Stoke fans at Villa after commentary (in the 2-2 draw 08/09)? Chants of: “One Trevor Francis” 🤭

Always seemed to be injured in his Birmingham days against Stoke. He hated playing against Denis Smith 😆

Not quite in the same league as Chris 'Go back to your council house' Sutton, but getting there. I bought Trev's autobiography for 20p from a Leek Library clearout back in the day, in which he bracketed himself with the all time greats of the game and not only that, devoted a whole chapter to a microscopic critique of the music of the Electric Light Orchestra for some reason known only to himself. The sort of book where, once you put it down, you can't pick it up again. Again, not in same league as Tim Lovejoy's classic tome www.wsc.co.uk/the-archive/no-love-no-joy/ but getting there.

I remember them having decent numbers , but not 10-12000 Liverpool ( Easter game ) , the shit , Sunderland ( Cup ) and Villa are some of the truly huge away turnouts I remember .. others Man City and Everton included tended to be large as a percentage of the gate but not 5 figures looking back it’d be interesting if anyone can remember 48/9 ..in the FA cup we played Blackpool ( estimated attendance 45,000 ) and particularly Hull , before the game we were expected to break our attendance record of 51k ( in the end I’ve seen various attendances from 46700 - 48000+ ) ..official Arsenal still stands , but was Hull game swelled by large numbers from Hull or did less come than expected or a lockout ( always feel it’s important as the years go by and the club has such low regard to our own history that older fans help fill in the holes before it’s to late )

Man City only had the Stoke End for the Francis debut- the terrace was over full though and they had most of the seats- 8,000 I would guess- very similar to their following when we beat them 4-0 in 75 Sunderland in the Cup estimate 10,000 and the league 7,000 Villa I recall it being reported at 11,000 for the first game, I would say closer to 7,000 for the second Manchester United usually good for close to 10,000 apart from the sorry looking 5,000 when we effectively put them down and they set fire to their clothes in protest Biggest I saw was the game against Liverpool in 75 when the attendance was 47,000, there was only to or three thousand Stoke on the 15,000 capacity Stoke End Terrace and they were scattered through out the Butler Street seats and terrace- 15.000?

He hated playing against Denis Smith 😆 I'm not so sure, I seem to remember seeing Francis play at the Victoria in a night game and he was brilliant and ran Stoke ragged. He could have caught pigeons. I've no idea if Dennis played or what the score was, but he was mightily impressive and still a teenager of course.

Always came across as being very anti Stoke on any commentary going & my own personal opinion is that Clever Trevor still is a complete & utter throb
Up there with another such great in that era as Tony Butler off Radio WM

How many did Everton bring during Holocaust season? They won the title that year I think and can remember they were all over the ground.

The match in '75 that Durbanscircus refers to above.....is that the match where the Man City fans ran the length of the pitch towards the Boothen End, realised their mistake, and then buggered off back to the Stoke End with their tails between their legs?

agree on the anti-Stoke commentary I remember one of those Central TV live matches on Sunday afternoon with Saint and or Greavsie in the 1990s, he was co-commentating on an early Stoke appearance of Mark Stein.
Mark had a slight mis-hit or something, Trevor opined that he would never make it at this level as he had consigned him to QPR reserves when he managed them.
As others have said, weapons grade Throbber

How many did Everton bring during Holocaust season? They won the title that year I think and can remember they were all over the ground. Liverpool win the title in our holocaust season and Everton finished 7th. They were getting on a roll though, won the title the following season. We played them twice in our holocaust season and they swamped the Vic both times. By the way the gate for the league game on 14 Jan was only 7,935!!! 16,462 for the FA Cup game Funny looking back, felt like we were under siege, for both games.
