Why else do you think we get a loan like Smallbone? So Soton can help us out? Development loans are just that. If you don't like taking "development" loans that's fine, plenty of folk don't, including many managers. Just separate out the expectations from the other type. Sterling, Pearson etc. Even so I disagree it wasn't good for Stoke. After Powells injury we had no one but Smallbone to play AM and he undoubtedly added to our points tally compared to having no one. “Why else do you think we get a loan like Smallbone? So Soton can help us out? Development loans are just that.” Development loans, in my opinion, should be at an appropriate level for the player and club. That is, they should start at the level you are at and surpass you by the time it’s over. Souttar and Taylor were good examples of loans that were successful for us, them and the loaning club. Smallbone wasn’t at Championship standard for much of the season. He got better as the season progressed and then ultimately fell off in the last 7-8 games as well. Realistically, he should have been on loan to a league one team last season and to someone like Stoke this year. The systematic pooling of talent by the big clubs have led us to feed off poor quality scraps and be grateful for it. There’s no way of knowing what would have happened if we didn’t have Smallbone. We may have played a completely different style that would have suited what we did have rather than playing an AM with limited AM ability. We will never know. If you don't like development loans don't take the risk or dont play them. All development loans are risks. DWP went on loan in L2 and got 7 games. Smallbone got 43 games in the Championship which suggests he was at an appropriate level for both player and club. If you didn't like him fine no problem with that. But as an almost ever present suggests it was Successful for Stoke and the player.

Development loans are the way football has gone and is going.
Championship and further down are essentially Development leagues for bigger clubs.

I don't disagree but back on topic we never get a sniff of this lad playing for us without development loans. Plenty might argue he does one of our own academy lads out of a pathway but that's the trade off throughout the leagues.

We’ve had analysts and scouts before this window. It’s often clear to see that someone’s first loan is rarely an amazing one. How many of those “next big things” hit the ground running? Probably very, very few. Most will likely get hot towards the end of the season. I don’t particularly care if they are going to be amazing one day, I’d rather just see someone who can meaningfully contribute across the course of the season. Smallbone (who I don’t like) will start the season at around the level that he ended last year, ie an effective (if not exciting) Championship player. That’s after a loan that wasn’t particularly successful. It was a very successful loan - he got better as the season went on and was very much part of our purple patch towards the end of the season. By the end he looked like a decent player at this level. He looked just as bad at the end of the season as he did the begining, yes he looked good for a handful of games but it was far from a successful loan performance wise.

Smallbone was pretty terrible for 80% of his time here.
The “purple patch” was like 6 games. They don’t wipe the rest of the crap away that he produced.
An attacking midfielder that didn’t attack very well.

This lad is real quality and is going to make an impact at some point...it's just impossible to know when...but that's football.
If we get him ...we might do what we did with Jack Clarke and get him a little early...to the great benefit of another club like Sunderland...who get him at just the right time.
Impossible to know when he is going to come good in men's football ( the championship) .
Really hope he comes.
He has quality and some point, he is coming good.

If he is so good that he will be a regular starter that makes us a better team fine, unsless I can't see the point in signing him on a loan deal at all.

Not included in their USA tour party, so that could hasten any loan move

I don’t get it. Do we want promotion ir not. This is not the sort of signing we need Promotion? You're 'avin a giraffe innit? This season will be one of consolidation and further rebuilding with a top 10 league finish the realistic aim. Anything more than that will be a bonus. And if your problem is with us loaning Moran then who were you expecting? Jude Bellingham?

He's very good but he's a lightweight with no experience of the championship ( and I like him) . He seems to have a radar of where and when the physical challenge is coming and in youth football glides around defenders as if they weren't there . I think he's coming good in men's football at some point, but when is anyone's guess ? This year ? Next year ? Two years time ?

Obviously no where near as good but can see a tackle, ride it, carries the ball well.
