Seems bizarre now that the UEFA Cup Final was over 2 Legs Home and Away! Even more bizarre that it, and it's forerunner the fairs cup, was at first restricted to one club per city The one club per city rule will become important to SCFC in a future edition on our 50 years ago thread.

The Sunday papers are all full of the news that Stoke are poised to bring back Mike Bernard from Everton for a fee in excess of £140,000. This seems a strange move as Josh has settled readily to the defensive midfield position and shifting him back to wide midfield to accommodate Bernard seems a touch extravagant especially as it is our goal threat that is holding us back. Director Percy Axon has made a speech in which he is bemoaning the expenses that the club are currently carrying. A new social club is costing £45,000 and improvements to the Butler Street Stand £65,000. Now the club (alongside all 1st and 2nd Division clubs) have to build a moat to stop fans invading the pitch. This is costing £100,000 and the club have asked for extra time as August is an impossible deadline. However, Ted Croker, FA Secretary, has warned that clubs who had crowd trouble in the past 12 months would find themselves severely dealt with by the disciplinary committee if they do not comply on time. Axon wanted the deadline to be 2 or 3 years and not a matter of months. We, of course, are a club who had crowd trouble thanks to the Man Utd fans visit. In 4 days time, Stoke will be eagerly watching the Feyenoord vs Spurs UEFA Cup Final, hoping that Spurs lose and Stoke can apply for a place in next season's UEFA competition. £65,000 is a lot for improvements which did not even include securing the roof (more info will be given in a post on this thread in early January 2026)

Feyenoord beat Spurs 2-0 (5-3 on aggregate) to claim the EUFA Cup. So, Stoke are now free to apply for a place in next season's competition. On a more sombre note, the appalling behaviour of Spurs fans left over 100 people in hospital with broken limbs. Some of those caught up in the hooliganism also suffered brain damage as a result of their injuries. Spurs were eventually fined £10,000. Stoke respond by announcing plans to vet all of their supporters travelling to European matches. The club are also considering banning under 16s not accompanied by an adult. In the semi-final of the Little World Cup, Yugoslavia beat Greece 1-0. This caused a violent reaction from the Greeks towards Welsh referee Tom Reynolds. He was beaten to the ground and kicked repeatedly. Scotland are now due to face the Greeks in the 3rd/4th play off place game but are threatening to refuse the fixture over concerns for their safety. Scottish officials are shocked by the lack of support Scottish fans are giving to the national team's World Cup campaign in West Germany. At least 10,000 Scots were expected to travel but those numbers have now been revised down to 2,500 due to poor ticket sales.

At the risk of hijacking this wonderful thread (this seemed like the most appropriate place to post it) I watched this interview with Geoff Hurst yesterday. Its mostly about England but towards the end of the interview he talks about his time at Stoke (around 50 years ago!) and specifically Alan Hudson. Sounds like he enjoyed his time at Stoke. A good watch.
Being a big nostalgic softy, I felt quite emotional when he states here that Alan Hudson should have been England's Franz Beckenbauer. That's no small statement, especially from such a level-headed guy like Hurst who played around some great players in his time.
I think there are some of us on here who feel the same!
Mixed emotions in some way, because it is so sad that this never materialised for Huddy, but at the same time so grateful to have seen this fabulous footballer in his peak at Stoke.
I always felt Geoff Hurst was a bit under-appreciated at Stoke as well. He didn't seem be able to move that quick but he oozed class.
Any thoughts?

Thought that the signing of such a high profile player such as Geoff Hurst was great business both on and off the pitch. He scored 30 goals all in the top flight and was and still is a great ambassador.
He lived locally and ran the Sheet Anchor at Whitmore where he was quite happy to talk football with his customers over a quiet beer and several noisy ones. The beers being the customers and not his!

Geoff was a classy player with a fierce shot (accompanied by the puffing of his cheeks). He scored plenty of goals for us but was never fully appreciated by Stoke fans perhaps because he was compared to Big John. Many of Geoff’s performances were in the Mama position or as a wide attacker. He was effective in both as he had the vision and skill to link the play.
Having Geoff at Stoke certainly led to the signing of Huddy. It didn’t work for Osgood though perhaps because he saw Hurst and Ritchie as rivals for his position (even though Waddo wanted to sell Ritchie to Preston).
When Geoff did leave for West Brom there wasn’t a lot of disappointment among our fan base as the years were catching up with him but as a hero of England’s World Cup triumph he could have remained as a figurehead at Stoke. And ultimately it was a lack of goals that stifled our bid for the league title.

Huddy himself destroyed any chance of a prolonged England career by firstly refusing to tour with the U23 squad for which he received a ban on international call up. He was eventually selected for full international duty by Revie and was instrumental in a 2-0 defeat of West Germany who were current world champions with many pundits saying he was destined for greatness in an England shirt. It never happened, Huddy played once more but was dropped because of disagreements & clashes with Revie. Then he was given a second chance by Greenwood 3 years later when called up to England squad as a late replacement but refused to join because he hadn’t been chosen in the original squad. What a waste & wonder what his own thoughts are now?

Huddy was picked for England in March 1976 (against Wales I think) but Stoke had a rearranged game away at Derby and both he and Jimmy were withdrawn from the squad to play in the league game. Bruce Rioch broke Huddy's leg in the Derby game and he wasn't fit until the start of the next season, so he wasn't available for selection in the end of season internationals.

I remember that Derby game - Rioch set out to kick Hudson from the start. He did. He broke Huddy's leg just in front of where I was standing. Huddy nutmegged him out on the touchline and Rioch basically stamped on Huddy's shin! It was also the last away league game for my old man. To get to the ground from where we had to park we had to walk under a bridge where the Derby fans congregated to drop things down on us and then during the game he got hit by a bottle thrown from the Derby end. Fortunately, the weather hadn't been great so he was wearing a decent overcoat so it didn't do too much damage but he decided on the way home that it just wasn't worth the risk anymore.

Our first team squad have now left for an exhausting tour of Cyprus. Bluto is injured and we have allowed Pej a rest due to his international exertions. So, Ian Bowers and Kevin Lewis have been called on to join the tour party. The squad are due back on June 19th where they will have a couple of weeks break before pre-season begins. On the tour, we beat Hamilton Academical 2-1, beat Anorthosis 7-1, beat Aris Limasol 3-2, beat EPA Larnaca 5-1 and lost to Levski Spartak 1-0. I think we played 2 other games on the tour but can't find the results.
The fixture list is out and Stoke will start the new season with a home game against the Champions, Leeds. The fixtures have been determined by the KDF9 computer based in Kidsgrove. Stoke announce that afternoon home games will now begin at 3pm rather than the traditional 3.15pm kick off time.

Stoke's tour of Cyprus continues with little fuss, but most of the news concerns Scotland's attempts in the World Cup Finals. On the eve of their opening game against Zaire, Billy Bremner passionately announces that 'Scotland will win the World Cup'. The following day an awful 2-0 victory against Zaire ends their hopes. At least Scotland had the pride of holding Brazil to a 0-0 draw but so had Yugoslavia. Scotland's fate was sealed by the Yugoslavs beating Zaire 9-0. In the final group games, Scotland drew with the Yugoslavs (who topped the group) and Brazil beat Zaire 3-0 to finish second. If only Scotland had scored more against Zaire they would have progressed at Brazil's expense. As it was all 3 teams finished on 4 points and Scotland went through the tournament undefeated.
In the group stages, East Germany beat West Germany (to top their group). Argentina were mired in controversy with a local girl claiming one of their players had attacked her. Brazil set up with a physical, defensive outlook which didn't suit them. Poland cruised through their group as Italy were eliminated. The successful teams would now be split into two further groups, the winners of which would contest the final. Group A; Argentina, Brazil, East Germany, Holland. Group B; Poland, Sweden, West Germany, Yugoslavia.

The World Cup continues. After their disappointing elimination at the group stage, 10,000+ ecstatic Scotland fans welcome their players home. Meanwhile in Italy, their players are subjected to a torrent of abuse and plenty of rotten fruit on their return after being eliminated in the same manner. The second set of group matches begin on Wednesday.
At home, the Sentinel report that TC and his wife Susan are proud to welcome their new daughter Tara to their home in Loggerheads.

In 2 days time we reach the 50th anniversary of the appointment of Don Revie as England manager. He has been manager of Leeds since 1961 and has just won the league pretty comprehensively. He will be paid £200,000 a year. This leaves a problem for Leeds who are manager-less with pre-season looming.
The local courts are still dealing with the backlog of cases from the visit of Manchester United and their hooligans. One such case involved a young man from Weston Coyney who was discovered by police in Stoke with a carving knife and axe secreted in a plastic bag. At first he claimed the bag contained his 'snappin', but then admitted he took the weapons to protect himself. The court heard he had appeared before them 2 weeks earlier for taking a brick into a game. He was remanded on bail of £10 for 3 weeks.
Waddo has been extolling the virtues of the Dutch team at the World Cup. He hopes their attacking intent will be copied by English football but doubts it because of the negative impact of the 3 up 3 down system. Meanwhile, at the World Cup, the aforementioned Holland have won all 3 of their games in Group A (4-0 vs Argentina, 2-0 vs East Germany and 2-0 vs Brazil) to book their place in the final. They will play the winners of Group B who are West Germany. They also won all 3 of their games (2-0 vs Yugoslavia, 4-2 vs Sweden and in appalling conditions 1-0 vs Poland). The game against Poland was a close run affair and most commentators agreed that the better team lost. I wonder if Waddo will soon have a first hand view of Dutch football!
