My dad had a seventies Stoke video when I was younger (maybe still has it somewhere) and this game was on it. I always remember after our headed goal the chant of 'you're gonna get your fuckin heads kicked in' from the Geordie faithful. I watched the clip on your post mate and there was the lovely chant. Took me back to watching that video as a kid. We were pretty bloody good then weren't we. Another thing I noticed from that video is the ripple of applause from Newcastle fans for John Mahoney's goal. You can see in the background that some of the Newcastle fans are applauding the goal. In fact I remember that being a thing, applause for opposition goals if they were decent goals. You certainly don't get that anymore....neither do you get your head kicked in so much either!!! Mixed bag it was then, that's for sure! I still clap personally if I see the opposition score a special goal but it is through gritted teeth admittedly.

Nice to see my videos are still getting shared and viewed. I did it out of love and wanting people to be able to see it but when I see the view count on some of them years later why didn't I go for the ad revenue option!

I remember applauding Glen Hoddle when he scored a nice goal on his debut at Stoke but it seems pretty rare these days. Less common than two fingers, or wanker signs towards opposition fans that's for sure. 70s was a transition period in this respect.

It's not like a player who has just scored will be upset by some fat bloke giving him a hand gesture ,- in fact, quite the opposite.

It is valuable mate. Me and my old man used to travel from Shropshire in the 80s to games in the car and he used to talk about that early to mid 70s era a lot. Then when you really start to take a club into your heart you want to know the history, the cult heroes etc. That's where it started. I'm about as stokie as a Cornish pasty but I was born there and SCFC has always been my heart. Great thread mate

An unwanted League Cup replay faced us tonight against manager-less Chelsea. We lined up; - Farmer, Marsh, Pejic, Mahoney, Smith, Dodd, Robertson, Greenhoff, Hurst, Hudson, Salmons. Sub; - Conroy, with a crowd of 24,000. Waddo described this match as a 'fine advertisement for the game', but Chelsea's acting manager, Ron Suart, was less enthusiastic and was critical of Stoke's heavy handed tactics. In particular a tackle from Smith on Garland raised his ire with Suart claiming it was a' 2 footed challenge from behind'. Garland had to leave the field and didn't return. Stoke still remembered the challenge on Farmer from the first game, which left him unconscious and with a cut throat. Chelsea gave a first start of the season to youngster Ian Britton and he opened the scoring in the 20th minute following a Hollins shot. Stoke didn't really click into gear against their relegation threatened visitors although Hurst missed a string of chances including two where he was clean through on goal but failed to test the keeper. So desperate were we to score that Waddo replaced Marsh with Conroy but still nothing would work in front of goal. With the game drifting to its conclusion, a Salmons cross was gratefully nodded home by Greenhoff and the game continued into extra time that neither team really wanted. We played the better football in this 30 minutes but couldn't get a 2nd goal. And so a 2nd replay is needed next Tuesday. Waddo won the toss and consequently this game will be played at Stoke. To make things even more interesting Stoke are due to play away at Chelsea the following Saturday in the league and that will be 4 meetings in just over 2 weeks. This game was a tasty affair and therefore things could get interesting with two more meetings due in quick succession. Recently sacked Chelsea manager, Dave Sexton has been appointed manager of QPR. Stoke are in the hunt for a new striker with the national press showing Huddy talking to transfer target Ian Hutchinson after the game. Nationally, tonight, the Tory party decide that Ted Heath is not going to continue as their leader. And in the USA, former president Nixon is recovering quickly from his life threatening episode of phlebitis and could have to testify during the Watergate enquiry.

Tomorrow a large Stoke following made the long trip to St James' Park to see us play a Newcastle team who are on an excellent run supercharged by the goals of Tudor and MacDonald. Newcastle are level on points with Stoke with a game in hand. We lined up, in our iconic yellow and blue kit; - Farmer, Marsh, Pejic, Mahoney, Smith, Dodd, Haslegrave, Greenhoff, Hurst, Hudson, Salmons. Sub; - Robertson. Newcastle scored almost from kick off - a MacDonald header was bundled over the line by Keeley. Pej was injured trying to prevent the goal and was eventually substituted with Haslegrave dropping to the full back position. However, our midfield started to take control of the game with their most impressive display of the season. Salmons equalised with a header after 22mins and it was all Stoke. Poor marking allowed Tudor a header from a corner on the stroke of half-time and we were behind again. The second half continued with Stoke on top and our good play was rewarded with a lovely Mahoney shot from the edge of the box that went in via the post. We were in control and Mahoney forced a fine save with another 20 yarder. For the home team, a Kennedy piledriver thundered into the bar. What a game! Newcastle set a club record of 12 games undefeated and we re-established our credentials as potential champions. After the game, Waddo wrote a long newspaper article expressing his belief that Stoke will rescue English football by winning the title with an entertaining style of play. Ipswich and Liverpool are equal top on 17 points and we are 3 points behind. Banksie is also featured explaining he wants his England u23 squad to be like a club's setup so that the young players feel at home. Harold Wilson celebrates his election win telling the public that things are bad and will get worse before they get better! And a series of IRA bombs rock central London. Tomorrow, Burnley are our opponents at the Victoria Ground. They are one point ahead of us in the table. In front of 23,000 fans, we lined up; - Farmer, Marsh, Pejic, Mahoney, Smith, Dodd, Haslegrave, Greenhoff, Hurst, Hudson, Salmons. Although Burnley have won 9 of the last 11 games, they were given a footballing lesson and the contest was over within 20mins. First, 20 year old Alan Dodd broke into the opposition box and cut back for Marsh to fire into the far corner. And minutes later, when Marsh was fouled, Hudson took a cute free kick around the wall to Hurst who found the net with ease. Burnley tried their best but apart from a Noble effort that was well saved by Farmer they offered little. Our attacking threat faded as the game progressed due to our heavy fixture load but only one team were going to win. Dodd was man of the match with both managers singing his praises at the end of the game. He looks set for a promising career at the highest levels of football. The highlight of the game was an audacious back heeled volley from Hudson, which Salmons hit with ferocity just wide of the post. 2-0 to Stoke and up to 6th, just 3 points behind leaders Liverpool and Man City. The talking point during the game was an interview in the national paper with John Ritchie in which he expressed his anger at the Kevin Beattie tackle that broke his leg and the response of Beattie after the incident. The fracture stretches from ankle to knee and has put the big striker's career in jeopardy. Ritchie went on; 'there's been no visit, no letter, no apology'. Beattie retorted; 'he's talking rubbish. I went for the ball and got it. I did not even make contact with Ritchie'. Beattie continued; ' I had every intention of going to visit Ritchie while he was in hospital in Ipswich. Then I read that he would not appreciate it even if I did go'. The front page of the Sunday papers contains reports of the damage caused by up to 15,000 ManUtd fans who went on the rampage along the Golden Mile in Blackpool. There were plans to postpone the game due to expected trouble but in the end the fixture went ahead as planned.

This has been a 2 game week with both matches against Chelsea. That's four fixtures against the same team in just over a fortnight. And the first two games have left resentment with both sides complaining about the physical nature of their opponent's play. On Tuesday, Chelsea were back at the Victoria Ground for a League Cup 2nd replay and what a game it was. Before the game, Huddy was named in the England squad for the Euro game against the Czechs and Alan Dodd will be joining the England u23 squad managed by Eastham and Banksie. Disappointment for Pej who was omitted. In front of nearly 27,000, we lined up; - Farmer, Marsh, Pejic, Mahoney, Smith, Dodd, Haslegrave, Greenhoff, Hurst, Hudson, Salmons. Sub; - Robertson. Stoke have been threatening to annihilate a team for a while and this was the night it happened. We dominated the middle of the pitch and Chelsea wilted under our constant probing. In the 3rd minute, Haslegrave nodded down to Hurst who coolly slotted home. In the 10th minute, Greenhoff backheaded Hudson's free kick and Smith thundered the ball into the net. There was barely time to breathe and 2 more goals followed in quick succession. First the giant Droy headed into his own net before Harris did likewise. 4-0 and its only half-time. Chelsea were even more unhappy that a tackle left Houseman on the floor and he was stretchered off. Our visitors lost their heads somewhat and a succession of crude challenges brought multiple warnings from the referee before he booked Garland. From one such free kick, Salmons curled his effort around the wall and into the goal. And then straight from that restart Haslegrave turned Harris's legs into twisted spaghetti before his shot was parried out to Hurst who made no mistake. 6-0 after an hour. The game was over, although Chelsea did reply with two late consolation goals. It finished 6-2 and the sides meet again at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Our reward for this victory is a visit to Portman Road. What will Ipswich have in store for us this time?

And so the 4th meeting of the two teams with the TV cameras in attendance. This is a game we should have won and one which produced a key moment that probably affected our final position in the league table at the end of the season. We were unchanged from the League Cup games, in spite of the pleas from TC who lined up for the reserves and so our team was; - Farmer, Marsh, Pejic, Mahoney, Smith, Dodd, Haslegrave, Greenhoff, Hurst, Hudson, Salmons. Sub; - Robertson. We opened the scoring with a beauty of a goal as we moved the ball swiftly through midfield before Hurst set up a tap in for Greenhoff. However, the TV broadcast did not show the robust nature of Chelsea's tackling. Hudson repeatedly complained to the referee who told him to shut up or be sent off. Mahoney was pole axed by a Droy challenge and limped through most of the game. The Sentinel used the word 'hacking' to describe Chelsea's challenges and the bad blood of the first three games exploded to the fore. Somehow, Hudson escaped serious injury from one nasty challenge by Kemper. Such was the ferocity of the play that two of the floodlights blew up during the game. Chelsea's main weapon was the long throws of Stoke transfer target, Hutchinson and it was one of these that allowed Droy to head an equaliser. Could Farmer have done better to stop the cross before it reached the giant defender? We battled back and Haslegrave restored our lead with a free header from a corner. Chelsea again equalised from a long throw and the game was well balanced at 2-2. With the game coming to an end, we put together one final move and Smith's shot found Robertson who made no mistake from close range. 3-2 to Stoke but the drama wasn't over and with the final action of the game an innocuous ball into the Stoke box somehow slipped out of Farmer's grasp and Hutchinson scored an equaliser. Huddy ended the game giving a double two fingered salute to the crowd. The result leaves us 6th, 4 points behind leaders Liverpool. We are now unbeaten in 9 games. Cloughie had been spending quite a bit of time at Stoke and was the star attraction at an evening at Jollees nightclub. He spent much of the time talking about his own career but one question and answer stood out; "who is the best footballer in Britain?". Answer; "Peter Shilton". Had Cloughie been whispering in Waddo's ear? And then John Farmer makes an uncharacteristic howler that cost us a point with Banksie sitting with Waddo watching the game. Was this the crucial moment when Waddo decided to buy Shilton? Before the game, the press were suggesting that Stoke were poised to buy Ian Hutchinson from Chelsea for £250,000 as a replacement goalscorer for Ritchie. After 9 goals in 2 games, did Waddo decide we didn't need another goalscorer? In the local news, an £11M contract has been signed to build the D-road from Etruria to Hanford.

A few mistakes by Farmer particularly dealing with high crosses which had always been a weakness. Then mishandling the low cross for their equaliser although the ball does appear to hit a divot and pop up and take him by surprise. Just wondering if this was the game that finally prompted Waddo to sign Shilton which he did 4 weeks later. I’m still in the camp that says we should have signed a decent striker instead of Shilton. Despite his weakness in dealing with crosses Farmer was a competent keeper a great shot stopper.

View AttachmentThis was the match I took my younger brother to his first ever match, 6-2 v Chelsea, under the lights in the old Stoke end, what an introduction.

This definitely signalled the end of John Farmer for Stoke. He was a decent enough keeper but there had been a few other wobbly moments. I think I'm right in remembering that we were prepared to buy a new striker as well as a keeper, so was it really a case of either/or? I'm not convinced it was.
