He did well at Basford and Ilkeston, though with quite a lot of backing. Hope he does well.

We used to laugh at Carruthers quite a bit in the 90s but let's face it, he was far better than the strikers we've had in the last few years. At least he got into position to miss chances I suppose.

He was incredibly frustrating Looked the part only to miss oodles of chances Don’t think that makes him better Once he dropped down to the 4th tier he scored goals

20 goals in 119 games - 1 in 6, better than what we've got now.
Edit I Should have said better than Delap and Gayle, I wasn't including Brown and Campbell.

Slightly better plus Brown has played wide (& wingback) whereas MC just played up top

Is it just me or don't we get anywhere near as many one-on-ones these days?
Back then it felt like we had players going clean through week in, week out (usually MC, who'd drag it past the post or blast it at the keepers' shins)

Big Ron always maintained we'd 'stolen' him off Villa.
I quite liked him but I'm a masochist.

Any thoughts on why?

If he could have actually finished chances off he'd have had a good career. Never seen a player miss so many one-on-ones.

Did inspire one of the best Stoke headlines of the 90s to be fair.
Scored the winner…..away to Boro perhaps!?
“I say, Carruthers!”
Surely deserves his place in the hall of fame on that basis alone.

Horrible man and very much disliked by his playing colleagues at the time.

I like him because he was part of the 95/96 recovery. It was such a relief when he replaced Keith Snot. Just to have a forward who could run!

He did seem a cocky bugar with very limited ability. As a kid I can always remember him being shit and him getting a lot of stick for the chances he missed. I'd like to know what went on between him and Nello though as you'd have to be a right twat to fall out with Nello really wouldn't you.

Omg I thought Vokes was a flop here? 2019–2021 Stoke City 78 games. 8 goals Prolific compared to our 'top' strikers (No I don't want him back! 😁)

Wasn't a popular player in the dressing room nor with Nello To check that my recollection from when we were writing the book is correct, I've just now asked Nello and he says he got on fine with Martin. There is of course the famous underpants incident at Tranmere which was actually Lou's idea. I wonder if Martin's salary at Matlock is enough to keep him in silk underpants to the style to which he is an accustomed ? When I interviewed Martin for the book he also told the rather bizarre story of how when he signed for Stoke he had a clause put in the contract that the Club would pay for a holiday for him. To implement this, Lou summoned..................err Nello, to take Martin to a travel agent to book it. I’ve seen Nello in many guises but I confess I've never really regarded him as a Simon Calder figure but there you go
