So if the Stoke City Ladies team got themselves a prolific striker who scored 177 goals, you'd be happy to consider her as the club's all time scorer ahead of John Ritchie? And if we're picking and choosing records then the women's time records in sports like athletics, swimming and cycling need to be scrubbed from the record books. This is absolute nonsense. She would be the club's all time scorer - that would just be a fact. Whether you considered her record comparable or not would be the debate. The OP's point would be that not many records in football are truly comparable anyway - so why get stressed? Correct. It's like which US player has the most Wimbledon singles titles? If you specify men it's Sampras, if you specify women it's Martina, if you leave it simply as US player it's Martina, yet no-one has any issue with that simply because she's a woman...football however and people are losing their fucking minds! Sad really. The records barely mean anything to anyone outside of a pub quiz anyway. As i said above, it's people thinking that because it's football, women aren't counted. Men are the only relevant data allowed.

The main thing that gets my back up in relation to this is the thinly veiled - and sometimes overt - sexism towards men that I've seen, that almost seems to just now be accepted. It's not enough for some to just take the result for what it was, without sniping or personal point scoring.
Just unnecessary criticisms of the men's game, the fans and (weirdly) the England men's national team. Then again, maybe I'm just overly sensitive.
Well done to the Lionesses - incredible achievement.

I hope you had better experience than me on the checkout, the FA ticket website left me hanging off and on for about 12hrs and various attempts until I missed out on all my preference seats. Boothen is now sold out and the OBI has about 1000 left. I think it will be a good crowd. Mate I've been struggling aswell regards the payment side of things. Don't happen to be using Natwest do you by any chance, seems to be a definite issue with Natwest & the FA website syncing payments through.. Spoke to our ticket office a short time ago & they have absolutely no control over the ticket sales for this match and they said there had been a few folk having issues completing the payment bit. I tried my wife's Nationwide card through and sailed through, all purchased fine so convinced its a Natwest issue. Did contact the ticket office back to update them as although they're not directly responsible they'll likely be fielding calls regarding it all the same. I was trying to get Boothen End tickets but ended up in the OBI stand as there's still quite a few left there, availability in most blocks still. Going to have an away fans view of this match for a change! Like you I had to check 8 separate ticket orders but thankfully nothing gone out for these attempted purchases! So top tip, use someone else's card that isn't Natwest and you should be ok 😉🤣.. Yep that's the one, I'm in there too, Mar lady wanted to go, so I had to repurchase.

Agreed that on social media the sexism has been coming from and directed at both sides, it isn't solely blokes belittling the women's achievements. What annoys me most from both sides (and as you say some women are equally as bad) trying to compare men's and women's football is why the men's team are even being mentioned in the first place. It's a magnificent result for the Women's team so as you say, just celebrate that. There isn't a single male player that needs to be brought up or mentioned for any reason. The women achieved what they did, so kinda makes sense to just talk about them really.

A good result but absolutely nothing to do with the mens game at all. The majority of games will go back to being largely ignored at club level. It seems to me that they want to force the womens game on us as an equal product. You can’t compare any records to the mens game
Alex Scott is wrong moaning about sponsorship etc too. They attracted what they did in 2018 as that was the going rate then. Same as moaning about grounds prepared to host games.
One day it might reach the same economic highs as mens football but at the moment the mens euros makes billions and has to subsidise the losses this tournament has incurred.
All this empowerment bullshit about running around in a sports bra too.
One of the most planned celebrations I’ve seen. She made sure she stopped, paused had a good look to see all cameras were on her then whipped it off.

For decades the women's game was absolutely derided - and for a time banned altogether -'whilst even in modern times the game's authoroties like Blatter have made crass suggestions like skimpy kits to make the game more 'attractive' - and that's even without the (still) neanderthal mysoginistic comments on social media. I'm not suggesting for a second you are guilty of any of that but you and I have been part of an establishment who has. If you can't take a bit of gentle ribbing back in a game thats traditionally full of insults then it's probably time we all packed in. I don't begrudge it them one bit - sometimes we need to just 'MAN-up'.

I don't doubt that there's many who 'care' - the attendance and TV viewing figures point to that. However, the proof will be in the pudding during WSL matches next season. I think many are almost acting like it's come from nowhere. It's been on TV every week for the past several years, and had plenty of exposure relative to the actual product, and barely anyone watches it. If people want it to really take off, the people who supported this past month need to get behind the clubs. For example, more attended Wembley than attend a whole month of WSL fixtures in total (24 games). It will be interesting to see if and how that happens.

I watched the final with my Mum and my son.
My mum has been watching Stoke since she met my Dad in the mid 1950s but I don't think I have ever seen her so nervous watching football as she was was last night. She is probably the most relaxed person at the bet365 no matter what the result or performance, but yesterday she was prowling round the room like a cat on a hot tin roof.
It seems to me that she understood the significance of the match more (at 85) than some of us on here. She would have loved the opportunity to play football (and cricket) at school but was only allowed to play sport that was suitable for "gals".
If yesterday leads to a country where sport for all really does mean all (and not just boys) and that all schoolchildren and adults get the opportunity (and the facilities) to play whatever sport they are interested in then it will have been an even greater day.

Changing the course a little, I have spent time in the car explaining to my missus that I am pleased for them, that I hope WSL takes off as it will offer a safe place for happy clappers, families, people who want to sit and not hear swearing or experience away day antics or flares to go. That then leaves the rest of us who like a bit of edge to our supporting, the odd swear word and probably, standing up and for 2 hours a match losing ourselves in "hating" people just like us who follow another team! This isn't a hompohobic racist thing its a basic football supporters thing. Two options which we haven't had before. Well done lionesses

Both codes of Rugby, county cricket, tennis, athletics all attract onlu small crowds week to week by comparison but are packed to the rafters for major international events. Cricket - for example - has been wrestling with this dilemma for 25+ years which has lead to the short format of T20 and 'The Hundred' - and the attendant party atmosphere - which now is starting to attract decent crowds I think this is closer to the problem womens club football faces and the disparity between club and international will continue for some time and will require some quite different marketing rather than just trying to replicate in 5 years what the men have built up over a century and a half.

Yes agreed. I think the Women's World Cup and Euros and going to be really popular (and will nicely fill the summers in years when there is no Men's equivalent) but the domestic leagues will struggle (as per most other sports except for Men's football).

High profile events for minority sports will always attract viewers and Johnny come lately fans that fade away until the next big event. Just look at the olympics. All these sports we invest our time in and get enjoyment in watching disappear for 4 years. I’ve said before that BBC as a public broadcaster should bring back grandstand concentrating on these sports like bmx, taekwondo, canoeing etc and watch the 4 year journey of the Olympic cycle. It would be cheap tv, provide revenue for those sports, inspire participation and get you invested in these athletes at their major events. The best thing the FA could do is get all womens club football on free tv. Not chase a few more ££ courting BT and Sky. It would grow the game more than the quick pay tv money would do

Come on. It should be kept separate. The BBC have been shoving this stuff on the same webpage for years, and it's blatantly ridiculous. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/leagues-cupsWomen's football placed above Championship football. No matter what jokes people want to make about our standard, this plainly denies reality. In terms of standard, quality, interest, income, attendance, and competitiveness. A good result but absolutely nothing to do with the mens game at all. The majority of games will go back to being largely ignored at club level. It seems to me that they want to force the womens game on us as an equal product. You can’t compare any records to the mens game Alex Scott is wrong moaning about sponsorship etc too. All this empowerment bullshit about running around in a sports bra too. One of the most planned celebrations I’ve seen. She made sure she stopped, paused had a good look to see all cameras were on her then whipped it off. A women's football match had the record attendance for a game in the UK before the FA effectively banned the game. Largely because the men at the FA couldn't take women being successful at what they believed was a man's game. "The game of football is quite unsuitable for females and should not be encouraged." Women's football would be on a level playing field already if it wasn't for that. And Alex Scott is right to say what she has. Loads of companies will be jumping on the bandwagon now. Look at Pride, for example. Companies trip over themselves to get involved after wanting nothing to do with it a few years ago. Also only a few years ago, the BBC, newspapers etc. barely reported on the women's game. The England captain had to phone the newspapers to even get the scores printed the next day. So maybe the BBC etc. are making up for lost time. And Kelly was checking if her goal had been allowed. How would she know what cameras were on her or not? Ridiculous comment.

That may be pedantic but it’s a massive difference it’s exactly the same thing you see women working out in at gyms all the time 1) She checked if the cameras were on her? Erm, she's just scored what could well be the winning goal in the final in extra time, so i'm pretty damn sure she wouldn't need to be checking that (even if she is so seemingly calculated and disingenuous as you, for some reason, are trying to make her out to be)! 2)As you say, we see sportsbras every day up and down the country in gyms everywhere, it's no big thing. So why are you so convinced she planned it as some kind of big spectacle if it's something people are well used to seeing anyway? It'd be the equivalent of me thinking "I know what will make people notice me, if i wear a t-shirt!" It'd be 100%, hands down the lamest and most pointless "planned" celebration of all time! 3) When you say it makes it "less spontaneous", try to use some perspective....we are watching it on the sofa in front of the telly so it does appear to be less spontaneous as it takes a few seconds and we are relatively calm and collected, whereas she is on the pitch fucking knackered, just scored in the final and buzzing like shit off adrenaline. I'm guessing that her thought processes at the time were nothing like as calculated yours seem to have been, whilst merely spectating. I'm gonna take a wild guess here.....a woman scored in the last 10 mins of extra time, went to celebrate, stopped, checked with the ref first (which you can clearly see her do), then went fucking mad and her brain turned to jelly in the moment. Kinda like happens every week up and down the country in the men's game but with far less bizarre conspiracy theories attirbuted to them, weirdly.

It'd be 100%, hamds down the lamest "planned" celsbration of all time! I personally thought that the ref had blown for a foul & from what it looked like from my point of view she thought the same. I could be wrong but that’s just how I saw it.

1) She checked if the cameras were on her? Erm, she's just scored what could well be the winning goal in the final in extra time, so i'm pretty damn sure she wouldn't need to be checking that (even if she is so seemingly calculated and disingenuous as you, for some reason, are trying to make her out to be)! 2)As you say, we see sportsbras every day up and down the country in gyms everywhere, it's no big thing. Yep, 100% you clearly see her stop, look at the lino then mouth something to the ref before she celebrates. Clearly checking with the officials before properly celebrating. As i say, happens literally every single week in the Prem but.....well, when women do it, women have boobs and stuff so must just be some pre-planned, despicable attention seeking plot according to some.

I disagree mate. But if right makes it even less spontaneous. But it’s a sports bra not a bra. That may be pedantic but it’s a massive difference it’s exactly the same thing you see women working out in at gyms all the time 1) She checked if the cameras were on her? It'd be 100%, hands down the lamest and most pointless "planned" celebration of all time! She clearly checked that the goal wasn't about to be ruled out. And if she didn't. A pre-meditated celebration? Completely unheard of. An utter disgrace. She should hang her head in shame.

All this empowerment bullshit about running around in a sports bra too. One of the most planned celebrations I’ve seen. She made sure she stopped, paused had a good look to see all cameras were on her then whipped it off. I've seen it all now. Fragile men will come up with any excuse or theory to put these ladies down. The celebration was iconic even without the equality and empowerment angle...an extra time final winner against the Germans at Wembley with a bunch of passion and emotion? Excellent!

That may be pedantic but it’s a massive difference it’s exactly the same thing you see women working out in at gyms all the time I take your point about it being a sports bra (and I did know it was!) but I still think if I were a woman I'd only be taking my top off in front of millions of viewers if the goal had been given. Maybe its just me but even as a bloke I'd feel a prat taking my shirt off and getting a yellow card for celebrating a goal which had been disallowed! I agree as sexist as this may sound it’s a lot more sexually provocative for a woman to show her sports bra than it is for a man to go bare chested. And tbh I’m not bothered either way I just don’t think it’s as big a deal as they are making out. There is a difference in how it’s portrayed though. Empowering for a women stupidity for a man.
