The Austrian passing out routine basically leads to the ball going out of play 20 years from their own goal every time . I really don't get this tactic at all unless you're a top quality ball playing side

Has the England keeper shrank in the wash with the kit. She looks shorter than the defensive pairing in front of her. Sounds like Pickford.

So 29 posts about tonightâs game (half of which by a couple of blokes being all bitchy to each other) kind of shows the current interest in the womens game. Hopefully it builds from here but I doubt it

The crowd noise was very screechy to be fair. Sounded like a school sports day from yesteryear when i flicked it on during the commercial break.
To be fair though star trek was decent tonight as it was an episode id never seen before. đ

I have a feeling the nation will be consumed by this competition in a way some people don't realise. Wimbledon ends at the weekend and after that there's not a whole lot else going on and the media will be all over it. I hope so anyway. Well there's no other sport on. All the arguments like "oh its being shown higher than the men's game", nope... It's the world cup and it's the only thing of interest going on in the world, so fuck all reason not to give it a try. It may be that I can't get into too much but we'll see. I think the standard is ok, but the speed of the game and fitness isn't quite there yet. I guess you have to judge it on its own merit instead of comparing it to the men's game constantly.

I was entertained by the game.
Hope they do well. But ultimately I'm not really arsed about the tournament.
Does that make me sexist? Absolutely not, I just don't really follow women's football.

It's not about being sensitive, but they are the kind of comments someone with a misogynist attitude might make. And it hardly makes women (and perhaps children whatever the gender) feel like they'd be welcome at men's football matches. Some people seem desperate for women's football to fail for some reason (and I'm not saying everyone who comments negatively does). Don't forget it was men who banned women's football for about 50 years, initially when it was as popular as the men's game - in fact, a women's match held the record for highest attendance in England, and the old men in the F.A. couldn't handle that. As for tonight's match, I had it on in the background like I sometimes do with the men's England team at the start of major tournaments. The atmosphere was great, and it seemed a decent game. How anyone can expect the quality to be as good as the men's internationals when women's football in England has only been professional for a few years, I don't know.

Tin hat. Check.
New Oatie dual identity..Ruff London (you had to be there) Check
When I were a lad, a couple of times, we had a school âoutingâ to the England Youth games. My first was Goodison. Spit. Most of the crowd were pre pubescent boys. It was vey screechy.
That was the first thing that crossed my mind, also, watching the game today. I just thought there was a younger crowd. In some instance I am proved right. Some of our esteemed (or pretty steamed) brethren are using this to introduce girls to positive (hopefully) images of women in sport.
Later in life I would have the joy of working with a couple of âboiâ bands. That was pretty screechy too.

I personally think itâs a bit rude to post under your own post but..here I am.
I know the answer is probably no. But could we get back to the actual game rather than slights/perceived slights?
Id rather talk about the football.

Itâs nice England won there first game but I didnât watch it till I was channel flicking and saw the last 10 mins. If Iâm honest there didnât seem a lot of intensity and it wasnât a great watch. The atmosphere reminded me of an old England Schoolboys game from the 80âs. That said itâs footy and Iâd watch a park game if it was on. Had to turn the commentary down though as I found it a little forced and it didnât sound natural maybe itâs just being bought up on Motson, Davies and Tyler and comparing it to them. I was under the impression we were expected to win comfortably.

Good start but we need to be much more decisive. Thought England were much better after the triple substitution, quite like the manager: doesn't appear afraid to make some big calls. Also thought Austria made some consistently poor decisions in possession which helped us,and we shouldn't expect to benefit from that so much against the stronger teams.

It's the first time I've properly watched a womens football match & actually quite enjoyed it.
Positives: - Loved how there was some rough tackles/studs on the foot/smacks to the head & the players just got up & got on with it every time, not one rolling around & no-one running up to the referee. Who would have thought the women would be more of a man than the men!? Massive positive & hoping this attitude can be passed onto the mens game. - Less 'game management.' The ball seemed to be in play for longer than normal which is a good reflection on how they all play the game. - End to end. Exciting game that I wasn't really expecting.
Negatives: - Slower pace. High pace games tends to be more exciting. - The crowd. Very different to the 'normal' crowd I'm used to & I didn't enjoy the atmosphere at all. Having said that it was really good to see plenty of youngsters in the crowd & it's something we definitely miss at Stoke & the championship in general.
Well done England for getting the win & as someone said above the coach seems impressive as well.

Well done England for getting the win & as someone said above the coach seems impressive as well. When I took the wee lass to Scotland v Spain the difference in the crowd is huge - essentially it was all families and/or kids football teams. My wee lass asked last night why there wasn't many men watching as she's used to seeing the mens game on tele and it mainly being blokes in the crowd. I think for the good of the women's game it needs to understand this niche but they seem to becoming more interested with marketing it as a product like the blokes. Think nerves probably played a massive part last night plus they only beat Austria 1-0 in qualifiers think they said as good parking the bus. At the moment there's a pretty big gulf in quality in the groups so it might suffer from some crap games to start with but would expect the pace and excitement to ramp up in the knock outs or when pot 1 and 2 play. From memory England were pretty crap vs Switzerland in 96 and two minutes vs Scotland had a huge impact on your tournament (Gazza's poor touch the flukely bastard and that spoon bending twat ). I hope Spain play England at some point as that could be a great game.
