I'm going to see England-Austria live on Swedish TV tomorrow evening. And already at 3 p.m I will see the semi final Spain-Sweden in the ladies U19 Euro Champs. Unbelievably, this game aren't on TV here!! So it will be a tiny stream on my mobile phone. I hope for a double gold obviously. Oh they make a right song and dance about womens football here mate. If you go on the BBC Sport website you wouldn’t know if they’re talking about the men or the women. That said I hope it’s a successful tournament and boosts the womens game because god knows they need it.

I have a feeling the nation will be consumed by this competition in a way some people don't realise.
Wimbledon ends at the weekend and after that there's not a whole lot else going on and the media will be all over it.
I hope so anyway.

Looking forward to watching it with wee lass - this could be like Euro 88 for me where just start wrapping my head round how tournaments work. Still pissed off my mum dragged me shopping when the final was on and then saw Van Basten's goal on the news - fuck C & A!
Gabby Logan said the Beeb jumped on the bandwagon only halfway through in 2005 and only got 2m viewers across the games they showed and in the last tournament they got 2m for the final. They'll absolutely piss that tonight I reckon and if England get to the final the figures will be ridiculous

Did you watch the Alex Scott documentary? It’s dodgy ground for a middle aged white bloke to comment on but there was something a bit weird about a black player with 140 caps speaking to another former black player who is on the diversity taskforce about a black player who stopped playing due to perceived racism which is affecting grassroots claim there is nobody in the existing squad she can relate to when Parris has 65 caps. Although that in itself opens a further Pandora’s box as they’d be both on separate pages of the Dulux colour chart so possibly there’s nobody black enough on the team to relate to which in itself would be kind of well erm erm…... Anyway, I really couldn’t get my head around how it could be possibly racism for the drop off in young girls because surely the same would be happening at boys grassroots level unless that’s me being misogynistic too? That’s not to deny there probably is racism in the women’s game but equally if I was asked to name the first ten England female footballers to come to my head Scott, Yankee, Aluko and Parris would all be in there so the role models exist. Is it more a class thing where poorer families haven’t the resources? Again though it is exploding so there’s girls teams popping up all over the shop – some of the u8’s sides from Dundee look like they could handle themselves in a bar fight let alone 4 aside. Whenever players from the team are interviewed a lot of them always come across as, for want of a better phrase, normal folk from normal backgrounds rather than girls who have chosen to play football over tennis or croquet at their grammar school so unless it has developed more along those lines with funding recently I don’t know. It was a bit dispiriting too though that we went from struggling to getting kids playing out of deprived backgrounds playing grassroots to discussing improved tv deals whereas having it on the Beeb regularly is going to do, and is doing, absolute wanders in growing the game – the women’s Champions League is on DAZN and how many are genuinely going pay £8 a month specifically to watch it? The WSL are on £20k to £250k a year and from memory think the average is about £50k-£60k which is in line with the league in the US after they seem to have learnt from their previous mistakes. Couldn’t help think though that the women are looking at what the blokes are getting which is dangerous territory given they seem a few years off breaking even as it is. Hope this tournament propels it further and absolutely no issue women footballers getting paid the market rate but there’s a tightrope to walk for a few years yet – really hope greed doesn’t burst what is going on as the growth at the moment seems something special. I think racism happened under that dodgy coach a while back for sure. But the point I was making echoes your one on class. Some women are excluded structurally as academies or whatever are miles away, and it might take a while for the growth in playing to offer a pathway through for inner city youth. And in many cities that means a lot of kids from BAME communities. Let’s hope Scotland get thru their playoff(s) for World Cup… He was defo a dodgy bastard like and wasn't trying to downplay racism in it - our recent panel for adoption opened my eyes to institutionalised racism as basically 8 middle aged middle class white women projected their bias on to my mrs. We got approved but the experience wasn't great and cast doubt on the system. The thing I would say from Alex Scott's documentary is she was almost trying too hard to attribute it to racism - she made comment that only 3 of the players are from black and ethnic backgrounds which on the face of it looks low but it equates to 15% of the team which is line with England's demographics. Wouldn't be surprised if drilled down further black players were over represented and it was Indian/ Pakistani players under-represented which is down to various social and cultural factors again including racism. For me it doesn't matter if there is 23 white women or 23 black women in the squad so long as the system in place is purely a meritocracy - like you say I think the academies need a re-think as there'll be a chunk of the population without means to attend long term and wouldn't be surprised if we find similar issues with the 'performance schools' up here. Be mint mate if Scotland get through the playoffs but doubt we'll be seeded as the 8-0 gubbing off Spain dented our goal difference. The 6 unseeded teams will play a straight knock out leaving 3 to play the 3 seeded runners up. Once the seeded team play the unseeded teams the three remaining teams are put into a league table from results across qualifying apart from against pot 6 and round 1 on the play offs. Top 2 make the tournament whilst the bottom placed get to go to the world knock out playoff that has similar format and is played as the warm up to the main event. Long way to go for us yet but good we're still in it after the absolute shitshow of the Euro qualifiers that were just embarassing frankly. I hope England do very well in this tournament and I wouldn't even be that put out if you win it as the lassies are just normal folk living their absolute dream - there's something just more relatable at the moment in the women's game.

Has the England keeper shrank in the wash with the kit. She looks shorter than the defensive pairing in front of her.

Shit loads of mistakes from both sides early on, england look a little more settled now and stroking the ball around in the normal manor that is boring, at least the mistakes are less
