It would probably relax the one who it is and they’d play better. I don’t agree they should be looking over their shoulder during training and they should all be ready to step up. And that should be all positions not just in goal. Pressure makes diamonds and the same should apply to the players if they can’t deal with competition then they won’t reach their potential. You still have that if one knows they’re in though. It should put the pressure on the other one to step up. And tbh what other club doesn’t know who their number one is? It’s not common and it was definitely one of the worst things about last season. It must be awful for them to know they’re out if they make one mistake. It’s just not how it’s done. We should have a number one and stick with them for more than 20 games unless they’re bloody terrible which just hasn’t happened.

You need to take it as they will pick a starter for the season and it’s theirs to lose that’s the implication now. There is no guarantee of who it will be yet and they have no guarantee that they will keep it. That’s the way I understand it and I’m pretty sure that’s how it will have been explained to the players.

I think Clark will come in and be the number one anyway. But that’s how it should be.

Removing players from the starting line up for errors has to be done with consistency inconsistency breeds contempt between players and management and players between themselves. I don’t think MON gets this right. With some players he seems far too reactionary and others borders on complacency.

Bonham should never have played as many games as he did last season - selling Davies was understandable but we need someone who will be a fixture between the sticks - the chopping and changing with Bursik last season really affected any consistency we may have sought to build. I was impressed with Bonhams ability in claiming the ball he commanded his area well something Joe could improve upon. Sorenson and Bego were both good at that and it was a big weakness of Butlands which in turn put more pressure on him. That’s not meant to be an attribute of the Scots lad if he signs. Doesn’t come off his line and punches the ball a lot and isn’t good at kicking. Can’t say it’s the sort of appraisal you want to read about a modern keeper.

I read an interview with Buffon a while ago talking about how not all goalkeepers are great all round he included himself with the ball at his feet in comparison with the new generation. He said that goalkeepers weaker with the ball at their feet should work on commanding their area and their defenders, the more the defensive unit is controlled by the keeper the less he should have to do. Considering his record and career I’d agree with him.

I wonder if we're actively trying to seek a new home for Bonham. Wasn't even on the bench on Saturday which I found strange given Fielding is likely to never start a game for us and is here as more of a coach than a keeper.

If Bursik and Tymmon goes, along with the expected Collins money we could see quite a few new quality additions.

I dont remember us having a player with Z in their name since Kurt Zouma, and before that N'Zonzi. There havn't been many.
Edit: Tezgel might make it!
