Fair fucking play to him. Hopefully this move gives him the confidence to reignite his career. I don’t know why, but I can see Utd selling him for a profit to someone like Fulham / West Ham and getting back to his best. It’s this kind of mad scenario that could really kickstart him Again as we saw in his first 18 months, he’s got the talent/potential. He's just going to be the tea boy to all intents and purposes isn't he? A younger version of Lee Grant when he was there.

I think it was one clean sheet in 10 games in the league, 3 in 16 (inc. FA cup, including Hartlepool and a woeful Everton), no great, certainly strange for Man Utd to pick him up for sure. Maybe they think there’s still a player in there? The fact he ticks HG will be working massively in his favour and not really much of a risk for them is it really? No it’s not, just strange that’s all 😂

I get the feeling that one of the reasons his form fell off a cliff was because he got his injury just as he was on the cusp of breaking through to the elite level. He was getting England caps and was in a strong position to go into Euro 2016 as England's number one. He was almost certainly going to get a big move that summer to a top 4 club, or at least a top 6 club. The injury and length of time out destroyed all that and he came back to Stoke almost at square one again having to earn his way back to the top. Stoke had changed while he had been away and we were now a struggling team with a toxic dressing room which didn't help in transitioning him back to form and fitness. He was quickly conceding a lot of goals and losing a lot of games and I think the negative, bitter thoughts started to creep into his head. Ruing his injury and the top level career he'd been 'robbed' of and I think all these toxic thoughts affected his concentration and decision making. If he wasn't being distracted by negative thoughts, he was trying too hard to make an impact and stand out which led to rash decision making and more mistakes. Ultimately his accumulating mistakes led to a complete confidence crisis and a death spiral of shattered confidence, trying too hard and feeling sorry for himself that he wasn't able to get himself out of at Stoke. It wouldn't surprise me now that he's unexpectedly got himself to the level of club that he's probably always believed he would have got to had he not got injured when he did, if it now goes a long way to settling his mental demons and his form now starts to turn around. Time will tell but it really wouldn't surprise me.

Time will tell but it really wouldn't surprise me. Where was he when Stoke changed, ? He is shite and one of the main reasons we were relegated He was out injured throughout the whole of the 2016/2017 season which is when the 'change' took place. We'd started declining at the end of the 2015/16 season (which Butland was blameless for, his personal form was excellent and earned him his England cap where he unfortunately got injured), we declined further in the 2016/17 season which Butland was injured for the entirety of. And then we had the disastrous summer 2017 transfer window where we signed the likes of Wimmer and Jese and lost Arnautovic so by the time he returned from injury in the early months of the 2017/18 season we were now a struggling team with an unbalanced squad full of the wrong type of characters. And a manager in Hughes who had lost his way. Butland certainly played his part in our relegation and made a number of costly mistakes in our relegation season. But he can't be blamed for the decline that happened at the club in the 18 months or so that he was out injured. That's the responsibility of Hughes, the board and the players that played during that period.

He was good in our first relegation season, and we would've finished much lower with Davies, Bursik, or Bonham at their best in the side (no criticism of Bursik as he has plenty of time on his side). I see it as a confidence thing with Butland, and it didn't help anyone that there was a time where almost every individual mistake (Butland, a defensive player or otherwise) seemed to be punished by a goal conceded. All the best 'keepers make occasional gaffes, and Butland's mistakes were highlighted more than anyone because he's the last line of defence. He was very unlucky at times and sets such high standards for himself, that that must have been difficult too. He's easily the best goalkeeper I've seen at Stoke at his peak. Butland comes across as a good guy, and I'd be delighted if he got an England chance again. He's still only 29.

Yep the pressure's off him now as he won't be seen to be failing if he's on the bench and may be more relaxed when he gets an odd game because he won't be afraid of being dropped if he makes a mistake knowing he's only understudy.

Butland was crap in the Championship is becoming another one of those myths that become true on here. This is spot on. Butland was excellent in our first season in the Championship. A worthy player of the year. He prevented around six more goals than an average keeper would have. Second season was when his numbers fell off a cliff.

Oh for sure but could you imagine if we were linked with a player who had tweeted that about our club? There wouldn't a well thought considered response for love nor money We signed Powell. Now I don't remember any tweets but there were numerous rumours (which often amount to the same thing) saying he'd previously expressed his hatred for Stoke. We still signed him and accepted him as fans. Us being hated by Crewe is like a cat being hated by a mouse.
