Gallagher is going to offer much more than Henderson, should be playing more as a Direct 8 as he does for Chelsea. He's playing to safe and deep. I'm not enamoured by Henderson as a starter but fail to see what more Gallagher offers, same non entity without the leadership Yep. Don't get it either. Not international quality at all imo. |

You should all thank your lucky stars you're not watching it on FS1 . 2 yanks who I think are commentating from the studio are making watching the game even worse than what is. They were even assessing Rooney's time at DC United, a few minutes ago. Having to watch it on my tablet as I'm in Wales for the weekend |

Really lacklustre, slow and devoid of creativity.
Alexander Arnold is fine when he's sitting in front of the back of 4 and doing a job but relying on him to be the main attacking threat from midfield didn't work. Tomori is an excellent centre back, not a left back though. Rashford and Henderson shouldn't be in the starting 11 again unless something drastically changes in either of them. Watkins & Bowen both deserved a start ahead of Rashford. Palmer did alright but lots of players just standing still whenever we got the ball.
Set pieces were rubbish - if only we had someone who was a renowned free kick taker and corner kick taker having a great season for his new club in the premier league...
Malta did stifle us quite well, I liked their number 9 (tried a few things, didn't come off but was willing to give it a go) and their right back (Rashford couldn't work him out).

Fortunately I missed tonight's game but I find it difficult to criticize England players playing under Southgate. His tactics keep the opposition in the game and the transition from Defense to Mid to Attack never flows as it should. It always feels like we have two teams playing in each half of the pitch. I just think Southgate holds the team back with his bang average management. |

We all pretty much know our strongest 11 and subs. This was way off it and it showed.
Full backs have become a bit of an issue, I’d have no problem with Tripper starting right or left but apart from that we’ve got the seemingly “perma injured”Reece James, the “can’t make you’re mind up about him” Luke Shaw, the “I’m a midfielder now” Trent Alexander Arnold, the “Chillwell conundrum”, the Kyle “better than he’s ever been but getting old” Walker and after that a few I tried kids

There was lots wrong with that England performance .
But it is time now for Southgate to drop his insistence , that Connor Gallagher and jordan Henderson are so much better than James Ward Prowse in open play , that they have to be picked ahead of him , even though they don't have a fraction of JwP's talent with a dead ball ( corner kicks , free kicks and penalties) .
We all know that is not true.

Whilst the best eleven players don’t necessarily make the best team, it’s difficult to see why certain players get picked.
Maguire is in poor form for his club, and whilst he’s been ok for England we need to remember the standard most of our games are played against. It’s not as if we play the deeper line he excelled in at Leicester. Our pool of centre halves is probably the weakest pool we have but there is better.
Henderson has gone to play at a standard below the best leagues in Europe, he’s past his best, and there’s other leaders in the squad now.
Gallagher, I don’t get it. I’ve not watched an awful lot of him admittedly but he’s never stood out for me.
Rashford I’m just about ok with, but I’d much prefer Sterling. Ignoring Sterling, I’d still have started a few of our bench ahead of him.
And finally, a centre half at left back when we’ve got a treble winning full back on the bench! I’ve seen enough of this players out of position nonsense down the road. There was no need for it tonight.

I wouldn't pick Cole Palmer if Bellingham was fit , because they are too alike ( like picking Lampard and Gerrard at the same time )
But with Bellingham out , Malta and no Bellingham , would have been as good a time as any to give Palmer a game.
Its only one game , but to expect a bloke who doesn't have the bottle , to pick Palmer and JWP , for Malta at home , to win us the Euro's or world cup is ambitious , bordering on fantasy.
