Scary isn't it If it has to be English then Potter or Carsley Although in football terms, Carsley is Irish - which would no doubt cause problems for some I wouldn't be vehemently against Howe. It'd be a hell of a jump for Carsley to suddenly become one of the most famous people in the country, on the back of hardly any management experience. Not sure how anyone would react in that situation. I know the Spanish manager had a similar trajectory, but the England job is chalk and cheese.

Looking at the English candidates fills me with dread,if we really have to improve,it just has to be a foreign manager, the names mentioned will take us nowhere maybe even backwards.

Carsley was born in Birmingham. Hes as Irish as Jonny Walters. I think it would be ballsy to appoint Carsley but it would make a lot of sense from the FA in terms of continuity, coming from within the system itself. This could be the way to make a treadmill of national managers following the U21 path. The more I think about Carsley the more it makes actual sense - IF we want to break away from the cycle of foreign managers and no style of consistency in the English National Team.

Thanks a lot Gareth, a real gentleman of football. I think in a few years we will be pining for the Southgate period of England, and he will be looked back on fondly. There was too much hate and vitriol thrown in his direction, but he made playing for England a pleasure for the players again.

He has done an outstanding job and leaves head and shoulders above his predecessors, with tue exception of Alf Ramsey. I would defend him to the hilt but the time is probably right as things have gone stale and he has taken a frankly ridiculous amount of criticism and abuse.
Hopefully the FA have now learnt their lesson and won't throw money after a high profile appointment. I'd be horrified if Southgate turned up to manage Stoke, but he was the right man at the right time.

Start the discussion with Pep and Klopp please. Keep Lampard and co well away from it. Offer it to Pep on the condition he can start after this season and put Carsley in temporary charge until then. Not gonna happen but I can at least dream.

Im actually against the Foreign coach just because of Capello/Eriksson experiences. Its clear we need someone who understand the English football culture (whatever that actually is). So I would include Klopp in the debate because he spent years here although close to zero % chance he would be interested. Out of the true English lot I would actually go for Carsley - Hes actually WON a tournament, and he is part of the FA System. I really think if we are trying to BUILD a legacy and dynasty for English football for the next 20 years we need to go in this direction. Other countries have done the same for years.

Looking at the English candidates fills me with dread,if we really have to improve,it just has to be a foreign manager, the names mentioned will take us nowhere maybe even backwards. I feel the complete opposite. For me, an England team has to have an English manager. I can’t get behind say a German or Argentinian manager running our national side.

Got Potter written all over it. I agree. He’s diplomatic and inoffensive, which the FA will like. Plus, he will be less expensive to employ, as they won’t have to prise him from a club role. No English manager has really won anything of note, so the best ones are at more or less the same level anyway.

The issue with Carsley is the second we start to not play well, he becomes a "paddy cunt".
The FA won't want that kind of heat.

Thank you Gareth, though I think it’s the right decision and I think he’s realised if he stayed on the expectation for success would be like no other.
Hope the FA have balls and appoint a proactive and attacking manager who focuses solely on football and not the sort of nonsense that has been allowed to creep in during Southgate’s reign.

Thanks Gareth. Your time has done restored some pride etc etc
Time for the next manager to take what has been done and make the slight improvements to go further.
We may however have missed the chance.
I hope it’s not Poch.
It won’t be Klopp. He won’t upset the scouse faithful
