Quite the contrary - I used to be a reporter on the newsdesk of a well-respected local paper that had the best interests of the community it represented at heart (not The Sent*nel by the way). It's the steady decent into the gutter of our local paper and the countless others ruined by Reach PLC (and the complicit wankers that stoop so low as to work for them) that really gets my goat. Thanks to Reach and its desecration of what was once a well-respected title with a great history of campaign journalism, this city now effectively has no instrument to hold power to account, to give a voice to the marginalised, or bring to the fore issues directly affecting the residents of Stoke on Trent. And given the government we've currently got both at a local and national level and their feckless regard of things like morals, transparency and even the law, a functional, tenacious free press has never been more important. But hey, so long as people can mock a single mum, or cheer the death of a drug addict, or put the boot into the city at every available opportunity, then who really cares eh? I had a slot in a National paper a few years back. Sports column on a Thursday. Not in the UK. I feel I still have that journalistic something going on. I doubt many will agree though. 😉 Wasn't as classy an edition as The Sentinel though. Crikey...20009. I remember as first column we beat Bolton 2-0. Beattie scored. Stayed up until 5 am to watch as a midweek game . Just Googled the year

The Sentinel ceased to be a local newspaper many years ago. It's owned by the Daily Mirror and mostly staffed from London. It's nothing but a load of clickbait drivel today. Waste of time, effort and money. That's the point though, isn't it? Every time one of their daft headlines gets posted on here, they get twenty or thirty more clicks and more money in their pocket. It's driving traffic to them, which is what they want - they don't care if the readers think that it's garbage. In fact, the clickbaity articles posted here are probably more 'successful' than their much more serious article about a drugs bust in Hanley today. They can churn out twenty clickbait articles in half an hour. In fact, I'm half surprised that they haven't made a story about this thread. At least the sports coverage is ok. I like the Ryan Shawcross column and Pete Smith is at least a genuine supporter. I feel sorry for some of The Sentinel staff. Some were looking forward to the new site launch whenever it was 2-3 years ago, as it seemed they'd been told it'd be more user friendly so that readers could actually read without their device slowing to a crawl due to all the autoplay videos and ads. And then the new site was worse than the previous one. The owners of The Sentinel have ruined it. With a user-friendly website, the reach The Sentinel has (or had) and cleverly targeted adverts, they could have done well. I don't think it's too late, but sadly the tabloid owners aren't going to do anything about it. It's bizarre that on a local news website they publish and plug so many irrelevant articles from other regions, and most of it trash at that. Good stuff gets lost amongst the crap. Even in the sports section, which is pretty much the only thing I look at these days, a lot of the stuff is rehashed across different articles, or an article is made up from something worthless. SEO-wise, they are dying a death and will only have social media left. It's sad because like others have said, local media should provide a valuable service. The Sentinel still does to an extent, but at least on the website, that value seems to be outweighed by the crap. There are websites with AI-written content outranking some of the national tabloids in Google. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Reach PLC are already using AI themselves.

Waste of time, effort and money. It’s owned by Reach who also own the mirror and many other media outlets mate Plymouth Live is sometimes impossible to read because of the amounts of pop-up adverts. I emailed them about it couple of years ago saying that it was pointless reporting stories because they could not be read. The answer came back that the local Plymouth Live office at Derriford had no control over advertising space as this was done centrally by the newspaper group.

When they bought all these local newspapers they sacked the 'proper' journalists and replaced them with 'content writers' whose target was page impressions and clickthroughs. A former reporter on my local rag, the Leicester Mercury (also now destroyed by Reach) wrote a detailed blog about it after he was sacked. I found this article and urge anyone criticising The Sentinel to read it: pressgazette.co.uk/spiked-column-by-sacked-star-writer-on-the-leicester-mercury-railed-against-risible-standard-of-clickbait-online-journalism/It fits in with the kind of stuff I've heard from The Sentinel and what I was saying about feeling sorry for staff, and you can see why some have left. The article was originally written by a journalist still working for his local paper, and they wouldn't publish it. Example quote: "It doesn’t matter that your readers are laughing at you when they click. It just matters that they click. "Another click, another notch on the website’s bedpost. In digital journalism, it’s not about the quality. It’s the quantity. Feel the numbers. "It doesn’t matter that somewhere out there, there is a growing legion of readers who are fed-up with this obvious rubbish. "It doesn’t matter that the newspapers reputation is being tarnished, daily, by this tripe." "Newspapers which sell fewer copies each year and websites that are so difficult to use they infuriate their readers." So yeah, don't blame The Sentinel and the people there. Blame Reach PLC who are driving local news into the ground.

Rival supermarket Sainsbury's replied to Liam's original tweet, offering to help. Liam added: "It's amazing that Sainsbury's have been in touch. I've had no response from Asda at all." It is now understood that the incorrect packaging was used for the mince pies. Job done! Well done Liam! There's more than one way to get a decent mince pie. OS.

It’s like they are deliberately pulling the piss out of their readers/audience
Maybe I’m just old but any media source printing that inane drivel should be mocked out of existence
On any level how could anyone read that and think it news or entertainment
Society is fucked if that dribble is acceptable
