How much longer are they going to persevere with Crawley? No longer hopefully. 42 innings to average just over 21 (if you remove that one huge score of 267) should be more than enough evidence to get him back in the county side for the rest of the year where he can enjoy his central contract and hopefully rebuild some form. Not quite sure what to make of a probable 3-0 series whitewash against the world Test champions! Probably would've been a very different-looking series score without Bairstow, but the "Bazball" approach, if it lasts, is paying dividends for the moment. It has a touch of Kevin Keegan's Newcastle about it! Undeniably exciting, but not sure how long it'll last or if it'll work in different circumstances. But I'd much rather see a team go down swinging than trying to defend and survive, nearly always falling to a predictable tame defeat. That's fundamentally where I'm at with it. It does need some refinement though, the Stokes dismissal in the first innings positive or not was brain dead batting.

He’s captained really well tbh, far better than I’d imagined. Honeymoon period maybe but still it’s a positive start and he and Baz seem to have given the players a bit of freedom to basically play as they want

I aren’t being funny, how do you integrate a day at the test into a work day? It will be finished by lunch time…….

However, when I see dumb cricket I'll call it out and that shot by Ben was really dumb, especially after he succeeded in getting New Zealand to spread the field.

Part timer😉 Drive to Headingley for 08:00, park up and find a coffee shop to work out of until about 10:30, get to the ground for 11:00, victory by 13:00, back in car for 13:30, in the office for 14:00 and work a bit later than normal. I have it all planned only the weather can scupper me…….

It was daft but you’ll always find some aberration from even the best players. I’d reckon he’s beat himself up about that dismissal good and proper. He isn’t stupid and to come from where he was with that “incident” at the nightclub to where he is now has shown a great deal of determination and resilience.

I'm not criticising him as a person or anything like that, I really like the guy and how can you not? it's a compliment if anything because I think he's better than that and I was highlighting an area in which this approach can fall down and needs refinement. I don't rate Leach that highly but you can see the amount of confidence Stokes has put into him, that's great captaincy.. I give credit as well

Already looking forward to the India test starting Friday. Will India have the bottle to play with their usual two spinners?

The confidence coursing through this team in such a short space of time is extraordinary. Which is pretty much the only difference. Imagine being able to bottle it and flog it. Actually... that's not a bad con that. Highland confidence in a bottle..Flog em on ebay It’s the decision making too, we’d have settled for draws in previous years after the opposition putting 500 on the board, and we’d likely have tried to slow the game down massively and grind out the runs after losing a handful of early wickets - but the attitude has changed now. Stokes has also been confident to bring the spinners in early which isn’t something we often saw in the past. We are playing to our strengths rather than playing test cricket the traditional way, it might have been a different story had Jamieson been fit and NZ had a better spinner then Bracewell, but we’re missing some bowlers too I guess. NZ will feel hard done by, cracking series though.

NZ will feel hard done by, cracking series though. 12 months ago, Kane Williamson set England a target of 273 of 75 overs. Joe Root turned it down. As his predecessor, Cook, had done on similar occasions. As Strauss did before him. We finished day 5 on 170-3 with Dom Sibley not out on 60 from 207 deliveries. We then got wiped out in the next test. What I find astonishing isn’t Stokes’ captaincy. By and large he’s doing what you would expect any captain to do. But it’s the appalling defensive captaincy of his predecessors which was allowed to continue unchecked. Despite us seeing what benefits positive captaincy brought to our white ball game. I’m hoping Stokes keeps this in mind. He doesn’t need to be ultra aggressive. Just positive.

Currently sat in a very nice coffee shop on Kirkstall Lane and can confirm “it’s spitting”
EDIT: Probably more “pissing it down” now in fairness.

Be lucky to get any play before 2/3 looking st the forecast. Should be fine to smash the winning runs in the final session anyway.

Just over the other side of t'pennines it absolutely fucking threw it down for about 20 mins in Manchester. I suspect it will take a few hours to clear and then drain and dry up. Hopefully they can get out there after lunch to knock these off.
In the meantime, plenty of County Cricket going on and the Women's Test at Taunton.

Good job we don’t have too many runs to get so we should still get a positive result from the game.

Looks like Eoin Morgan is retiring tomorrow. Buttler has to be an absolute shoe in to take over as captain, which will hopefully rule him out of Test cricket.
