He's a stereotypical flair player in that he possesses the quality to pick out a pass, whip in a quality set piece or score a goal at any moment. But when he hasn't got the ball and we aren't attacking, he contributes very little and is actually a little bit of a liability and leaves a hole in central midfield which is really exposing our baffling lack of a central defensive midfielder this season.
There's no doubt though that his positives outweigh his negatives and he possesses that quality to turn draws into wins. Saturday being a perfect example, we were poor and a game that last season would have been a 0-0 draw or 0-1 defeat was turned into a win thanks to his input. It's happened a few times this season and is why we're 4th and not something like 11th. Exactly the kind of player we've been missing for years and haven't had since Arnautovic.
We really need to search for a better balance in midfield though to mitigate the impact of his lack of defensive play and positional nous though. Our central midfield are too easy to play through and a better team would have punished us on Saturday. A defensive midfielder must be a priority in January. Finding someone who could bring us more control in midfield will allow us to take more advantage of Vrancic's quality and leave us less exposed against the better teams.

Not sure I agree with this, I’m sure he’s got some of the best stats in the league for tacking and interceptions. He might not run round like Joe Allen or be as dominant as N’Zonzi but he’s been very good all round this year really. His defensive work has actually been a welcome surprise to me.

He wins more than his fair share of tackles. He just lacks mobility which means he can't always get to a player to tackle them, but his positional sense is pretty good meaning that doesn't happen too often. He's class, love watching how simple he makes the game look.

His work rate is excellent, the second part of this season that side of his game has impressed me more than his creativity although hopefully Saturday is the start of another run for him. If we can manage his game time into the second half of the season he could be a massive player for us…..

Thought Saturday was pretty typical of him. He was awful on the whole with 2 massive moments of quality. You really do get 'awful' and 'average' confused a lot. The only two average players on Saturday were Brown and Fletcher.

I agree about the balance but Vrancic gets stuck in much more than I though he would when he doesn't have the ball.

I think he gets stuck in more than you're giving him credit for. See that cracking tackle right at the end on Saturday that sent Campbell on his way for the goal. It wasn't the only ball he won Saturday aswell I thought he won his fair share.

That tackle to dispossess the Boro player and set up Tyrese's goal was probably the best by either side on Saturday. If that had been done by a player at a top 4 Premier League Club the pundits on MOTD would have rightly raved about it.

I don’t get there is even any debate when we have a bloke who creates less and does the square root of fuck all else and isn’t even at the arse end of his career at least age wise. I’m not too sure Romaine will find many managers willing to put up with his lack of contribution. Compared to him Vrancic is a warrior.

If you look at his stats when he starts he nearly always wins more defensive duals than any other Stoke player. Saturday was a case in point. He was involved in 10 defensive duals (Brown was second highest with 7 then a whole group of players were on 6). He won 6 of those 10 with Chester on 2 being the only other player to win more than one. These are defensive duals when your team gains possession not when the ball runs loose and not headers. Sawyers on the other hand was only involved in one defensive dual which he lost. I don't think anyone can say that Mario doesn't do his fair share of defensive work.
