Vrancic isn't the problem, it's the rest of the midfield that is.
Stick him with Powell and a proper DM of the Glenn Whelan mould and there'd be no issues at all.

As predicted, the round robin is now in full swing. The hatchet men amongst our support are moving round their targets on a weekly basis, moving from one poor sod to the next. It will stop when we bring in a strong ball winner, with stories of "oh, player x has improved his form. Good stuff" when in reality they won't really have changed.

He wasn't signed for his tackling and midfield 'steel', he was signed for his link-up play, passing ability and set-pieces. He's mostly been excellent especially at the latter, but he has given the ball away a lot in the last couple of games and it has left me doubting his consistency.

Seems to me he is a player that can make things happen in a variety of ways and that is something we definitely need. Too many games last season were a stalemate simply because we lacked a player who could step up and create a chance. Allen did pretty well I thought but Sawyers still has to reach the standards he is capable of. If he does gradually improve and players like Thompson and Clucas can find some consistency we have quite a lot of midfield resource around him - it’s still early days.

Am happy with both vranic and sawyers in midfield both are a class above what we've had for a few years. Both are able to keep the ball in tight situations which keeps our momentum going, And much better than any alternative we have - Clucas. Thompson. I know Powell is a crowd favourite but he does pick up injuries which keep him out for 4 or 5 games at a time. It's still a major step forward than anything we've had while in the championship. Sawyers passing last night was really bad wasn’t it? And for a large part of the game it may as well just have been Allen in there. Sawyers wasn't at the races last night, you could see his disappointment in his facial expressions at times. He should've been replaced around the 60 minute mark. I think he will come good for us but clearly needs more time out there to sharpen up.

Ahhhh, the myth that is Glen Whelan comes round again, the Chinese whisper that wont quit. In 10 yrs time he'll be talked about with the same misty eyed nostalgia as Alan Hudson . Seriously though, a DM option in the squad would not go amiss, but our midfield is almost spot on for me - they completely bossed the first half last night. Allen was excellent and MOM contender until his silly foul ultimately cost us. Sawyers started well but faded 2nd half. The only major concern is Clucas because I do not see where he fits in tbh and apart from missing another sitter, he offered very little again last night. We have Powell to come back hopefully soon too, I just hope Allen's injury is not serious.

Am I the only one who has been surprised by his battling and tackling? He doesn't shirk the physical part of the game despite his frail frame and is quite adept at little professional fouls. I think he's great and although Allen started brightly in the end Vranic was our best midfielder. Sawyers was abysmal and should have been subbed earlier probably at half time. Was just about to say this. I’m sure sky put up a stat and he’s no1 for tackles, interceptions and passes in our MF. His tackling has been a welcome but particular surprise.

In theory having Vrancic alongside either a Powell or Sawyers could work a treat apart from our current issue with it being Allen that is holding mid behind them. He’s not the man for it and MoN spotted it and took him off. It calls for a championship equivalent of an Ndidi / Kante - most champ teams play with 2 of them (hence why us having 2 AM is good offensive tactic), a Cook/Jensen/Jamal/Lerma/Chalobah type, even Mikel would have been better than Allen in this set up.

His passing wasn’t good but without the ball his game is non existent. If Vrancic is a luxury god only knows what Sawyers is. He’s certainly seen all the publicity about heading and dementia too no way is he heading it. So far looking like the exact opposite of the type of player we needed.

Vrancic is the best midfield player in the squad, with the possible exception of Powell. His crosses and corners alone are worth his place in the team. The goalie clearly did his homework on the penalty because he never moved which is very unusual unless you know he's going to blast it down the middle. Allen was horrible: poor passing, and very poor ball control for midfield player (it's often said his second touch is always a tackle and that was never more evident than today). His tackling is almost as bad as Charlie Adam's - he should never have tried that tackle in the position he was in and it cost us a goal (a great goal, but he should never have been given the chance in the first place). Clucas is not the greatest midfield player in the world but he's better than Allen. We have not been anywhere near as good in the last three games and Allen was the weakest line. That is very harsh on Joe Allen, I’m not his biggest fan but he won the ball on a number of occasions last night and played some great forward passes. The free kick was a daft one to give away but credit to their striker, you don’t see many of those go in. His pass to Smith for our goal was sublime and he put those passes forward several times in the first 30 minutes. I suspect that in the first mini drink breaks while a Barnsley player received treatment (since when were they allowed this season? I also thought that the opposition weren't allowed to put a man in the wall any longer but they did for their goal but that's a different topic) they tweaked this to stop Allen's passes.

Allen gave the ball away a few times too with awful passes So did Vrancic, so did Wilmot, Brown gives the ball away more than he keeps it... Allen was excellent last night apart from the silly foul. Watch the game back if you can. On the ball I agree, Allen was excellent. Off the ball he was very inconsistent all evening. It just isn't his game with what he is being asked to do but to his credit, he is giving it a right good go. The silly foul was avoidable if you are well versed in that role. Allen should be playing where Sawyers started in this system but even then, his perfect role is alongside a ball winner in a two, with his role being a pace setter distributing the ball.

I thought vrancic was too.
But sawyers was poor. Too lightweight. Doesn’t seem to want to get stuck in or track back very much.

Allen had a really good game last night. He came off as he was hobbling. He made one rash challenge that cost us, but he was stretched trying to cover for Sawyers and Ostigard, who should have got there sooner. It’s funny, the second we bring in a defensive midfielder he’ll become the one to moan about.

Rather have him in above Sawyers. Can see why he’s been allowed out on loan. Vrancic is a decent, very intelligent footballer with great set pieces. I aren’t sure though, once Powell returns, whether I’d want him playing next to Powell or as his back up. Jury is still out for me, clearly a talented player though.
