Deep down I know that many people are disgusted by it, but don't actively stand against it.
And I know I'm like a dog with a bone over stuff like this, but I hear so many stories of casual racism against my students, and some friends, it is happening all the f***ing time.

Well fuck a duck the font of all knowledge that masquerades as Gary Neville Says the prime minister should do more to condemn racist remarks in football Well apart from his condemnation this morning and his support of the players What is he supposed to do I suppose he could bend to the slightest breeze and issue inane platitudes like starmer who constantly ignores racist homophobic anti Semitic abuse within his own party All racist behaviour is abhorrent but it’s not the prime minister’s job to police it If people like Neville wants to lay blame start with the social media companies That help feed his profile and income

Its not the Prime Minister's job to police racist actions? He is the leader of the country. Good practice and policy starts at the top.

Exactly he’s leading the country I’d sooner he wasn’t but that’s a different discussion He’s unfortunately got a lot on his plate There is sufficient law for the police to be able to arrest individuals They appear to do be doing little or nothing As for the social media companies they could put a stop to the abuse far more than they do This is where the pressure should be placed maybe if all the people who find racism abhorrent boycotted social media I’m sure something would happen quickly As for the government and prime minister being involved id sooner they had as little to do with media control as possible

What can I do about some twerp sat on his computer at 3am in the morning spouting utter bile? Government needs to compel greedy media giants into sorting it out. Start by making anonymous media accounts illegal. If you want to post something in the public domain ensure that person has an address and contact details so if they act in a disgusting manner they can be dealt with appropriately. Racism is a horrible thing and it most certainly exists all over the place. But don't fall for this incorrect idea that we live in a dangerous vile racist society. We don't. And if we did then God knows how you would describe dozens of other countries around the world.

I used to be at best indifferent to the "taking the knee" stuff.
After what went on last night, and reading many accounts of people who have to suffer this stuff every day....I now realise why it is done and support them doing it.
Football still has a very nasty element tacked onto it. It needs sorting, properly. I was perhaps naive in thinking this had already been done.
I realise I may get flamed for the above, but anyone who does....are you absolutely sure you're not part of the problem?

@jolyonrubs "I was racially abused last night as I was entering Wembley stadium. My shirt has Rubinstein on the back. I took my coat off & immediately: “Are you even from this country” & “he’s a Jew” followed by laughs & jeers by a group of 6 men in their 50’s."

Do the thick bastards not realise that Sterling (black) scored crucial goals or that white players have missed penalties before? The do know but do not care because they're racist, pure and simple. I'm far from left wing but the Tweets and incidents you've highlighted on this thread are appalling.

It is if you're a black footballer and you miss a penalty. No Skip. You are falling for the media trick yet again. Funny how we have quite rightly had 4 weeks of positive media attention promoting unity and diversity and how this fantastic team have pulled us all together behind a cause. And now suddenly its back to the good old "what a horrible place this is". It is a total joke yet people fall for it time and time again. What is being perpetrated to the likes of Saka is disgusting and as I say above the government and the media giants need to sort their shit out before this becomes a bigger problem than it is. The majority of people in this country are appalled by this and deep down you know this to be true. The behaviour of a minority does not mean that a large percentage of the country is racist. This country will always have a very small number of extremists whatever there hateful drive. One of the biggest first steps is for it to be accepted it’s a small number who cause maximum damage and that they need to be targeted hard. That’s the best way of fighting any hate crime because let’s not forget that they’re the type that also target gay people and people with disabilities who are often forgotten. They will never change through education so teach them by prosecution.

Are they attempting to make us all hate this country and if so why? How quickly they drop the last 4 weeks of positive energy and point the finger of "racist louts" at a whole country because of the actions of a small percentage of scum bags. Everything points back to the media and social media. They highlight and virtue signal against the disgusting division that THEY themselves promote and create. And we are total mugs if we fall for it. They are a fookin joke.

Strange isn't it- for anything else, such as the travelling community or terrorists the left wing press are quick to say that it's just a minority who cause trouble. Yet when a minority act like dickheads such as this weekend, it suddenly reflects on a whole nation of 50m. That's the kind of sensationalist bollocks people slag The Mail off for.

And we are total mugs if we fall for it. They are a fookin joke. It's a worldwide media agenda. They're burning churches in Canada now after the US was on fire for most of last year. I went to bed last night angry that we had lost, angry that the manager didn't go hell for leather for a win, angry at his penalty takers choice but none of this anger had anything to do with race. 2 of those penalty takers had barely touched the ball, the other had been kicked, elbowed and thrown around like a rag doll in the limited time he had played. I would say that at least 95% of people are good. They are the majority and not the small, very vocal scumbags of all races that cause issues for the rest of us.

Starmer conflating support for taking the knee (a highly contentious and divisive issue with disputed overtones/connections) with opposing racism (a near universal British value). In effect he's branding non-racist people racist. An obnoxious and destructive stance.

Several members of the England camp have come out several times and said there are no overtones, it's simply about them showing solidarity against racism. I take it you simply don't believe them despite them saying it over and over?

I was disgusted by the behaviour of a minority at the stadium yesterday evening and by the idiots online abusing the 3 England players. They’re everything that’s bad about society and the U.K. Thankfully they’ve been heavily condemned today and the 3 lads wholeheartedly supported.
In relation to the fight against racism is there actually anything else being done currently in relation to the next stage and uniting people and to punish those involved in the online abuse and other forms of hate crime.
Taking the knee has being taking place for over a year now and though I don’t have a particular issue with it you have to question has it ran it’s course and will it actually progress anything re fighting racism because after yesterday we seem even further behind than what we were when it started. Yes it’s got people talking and debating but has it resolved the issue.
Surely now there has to be a more structured plan of action in relation to moving things on and to actually doing something more progressive starting with prison sentences for the worst offenders of race hate online. Also how about we start holding the Social Media sites accountable and making them responsible for policing their own sites.

The whole world seems to be going to shit. Perhaps it never wasn't going to shit but social media is pitting people against each other in such a new and unhealthy way. It all started with websites helping people get in touch with old school chums and will end up with everyone killing each other. It's so depressing.

I think we need to be strong, talk openly about the causes of the bad stuff, that I agree has got worse, and work collectively from the bottom up, and put pressure on those at the top - governments and tech giants - to use their weight, their power to change laws, to enforce laws, or to use technology to smoke out the online abusers. I can well believe that some of the online abuse the players got last night and today was also the result of bots and until someone can prove otherwise, I wouldn't be at all surprised that those bots are controlled by Russian interference. When Biden met Putin the other week, one of the things they discussed - quite openly bizarrely - was the Cyber Cold War, and even discussed what was and wasn't off limits. Technology is being used to divide and rule, no question in my mind. But that doesn't take away from the difficult reality that some fans of national football clearly see Nationalism and Patriotism as the same thing. These discussions need to continue.

I think Gareth Southgate alluded to that stating that a lot of the abuse had come from overseas. Social media is destroying this country whether it’s kids abusing each other or bloggers wanting to post the next video of someone being stabbed or beaten up for likes. We’re a pretty poisonous society right now totally split in our views with the worst possibe people getting a very loud voice. It’s easy to politicise the issue and blame it all on the Tories and yes they have to take some responsibility but surely more than anything this is about common decency which seems to be lacking in a lot right now. These idiots who abuse and cause trouble have I’m sure always been around but now they have a voice and freedom to post or write whatever they want and mentally scar those people that they target. This isn’t just about racism though of course that’s a big part it’s about any victim that’s been targeted for their colour or anything that makes them different. The likes of Instagram., Tiktok and Facebook need to do more even if it means they lose subscribers. How about they start charging for the use of their site and ensure they have the card details of those paying to use their service that would certainly make people think more and it would make it far easier to find the perpetrators.
