Finally! An English player could find the back of the net today!

Just scored about 8 minutes into his debut start πππ After that insipid England performance, this actually really gave me a buzz haha! He looked so chuffed, and it was just surreal to see him celebrating with Arturo Vidal. I also can't believe how ridiculously massive looks compared to his teammates.

And it was the winner. What a dream. Chilean social media going absolutely mental for him. A neighbour of mine just sent me a link to a story about him in the Sentinel π

It does seem unlikely there's a Stoke-born pro out there of sufficient quality with a Venezuelan (?) mother, hot on the heels of Brereton and Chile.

This is so bloody bizarre for me. I came 9,000 miles across the globe fifteen years ago to live in Chile, I've followed the local football and the national team all that time, and a Stoke fan from Blythe Bridge ends up getting called up here. Mental. 20 years ago I dated a Chilean girl from Manchester. Sheβs spent most of her life here but her parents, like many other Chileans left Chile when Pinochet came to power. In the UK, most Chilean exiles ended up in London, Manchester or Sheffieldβ¦ but obviously a handful must have come to Stoke as well. Iβm absolutely chuffed for Ben though. What an unlikely but fabulous story. Now, whatβs Hispanic for βduckβ?

The biggest Chilean exile colony is in Sweden, curiously

The girl I dated was very hot-headed (not sure if itβs an Hispanic thing) but part of the reason I called it quits. Think her parents had a hard life during the Pinochet era and her Dad eventually returned to Chile while she and her Mum stayed here (they were from Valparaiso originally). It was really interesting learning about her culture though.

A Blackburn supporting friend says:
β Stoke born this lad. Really chuffed for him, heβs had a tough time at Rovers and struggled for confidence. Since lockdown heβs really turned a corner. It emerged that he has Chilean heritage and now heβs banging them in for the national team. Made up for him.β
β Signed him from Forest for Β£7m, huge price tag for a teenager and he didnβt score for 2 seasons. Watched him leave the pitch in tears after being booed by our own βfansβ and thought he was done. But heβs grafted his way back, seems a nice lad and the Chile fans love him π And yeah Iβd say Iβm a proud northerner for sure! πͺπΌ.β
