Good to see local lad and ex Stoke striker Brereton getting international call up for Chile. Crazy. I live in Chile and had no idea.. where have you seen this? Had a bit of a google but I can only see old articles saying he'd be eligible if he wanted to.

Sorry to chuckle, but having parents/grandparents of several nationalities (often from opposite sides of the world) is not uncommon these days. Should the grandchildren of the lady in my life shine at sport they will be able to choose to represent England, Scotland or Thailand!

This is so bloody bizarre for me. I came 9,000 miles across the globe fifteen years ago to live in Chile, I've followed the local football and the national team all that time, and a Stoke fan from Blythe Bridge ends up getting called up here. Mental.

Mental. What are Chile's chances of success at the moment? No disrespect to Brereton but his call up suggests it's not a vintage national team when you think of some of the previous names they've had to pick from.....

No disrespect to Brereton but his call up suggests it's not a vintage national team when you think of some of the previous names they've had to pick from..... There's a couple of factors - one is that the golden generation of Sanchez, Bravo, Vidal etc is fading, but also Chile have a really packed schedule coming up, with WC qualifiers and the Copa America - they have to play Argentina twice in about ten days, for example - and the manager is exploring far and wide (and being openly experimental) to give himself plenty of options for both squads. I think he's actively trying to rejuvenate the team with a focus on youth. Brereton is in a squad of 30, and others could be added in as well. But yeah, they won't be among the favourites like they once were. Edit sorry Sanchez not Suarez obv

Great until October ‘19, bit sick of it now because of political unrest and lockdowns etc. Santiago is a great city in “normal” circumstances and Chile has some spectacular places to get to.
