I opened my kitchen blinds a while ago to see some kind of bird of prey on my decking eating a pigeon alive ! However the pigeon fought back and got away minus loads of feathers and some of its flesh. It took a while to wash the blood away and I caught it all in video on my phone. I witnessed this when young years ago. We had woods not far from the house and regularly saw sparrow hawks circling in the sky. One day my Dad pulled up opposite our house where there is a small grassed area. Next second, with all sitting in the car, a sparrow hawk comes swooping down and rips the pigeon to bits in front of us. For anyone on Reddit it was truly a r/natureismetal moment.

It’s funny now as when we open the blinds in the morning there’s birds waiting on the lawn for their food, well seems that way. We’ve got buzzards very close by absolutely majestic things and rooks everywhere. The local farmers have set something up that keeps banging like a shot gun to keep the birds of the seeds I presume, which is good as we get them in the gardens then. Sat in my back garden yesterday with a brew in the sunshine and had 2 buzzards circling quite low over head, great against the blue skies. Hopefully looking for any unawares cats that they could carry off for tea 🤣

At the risk of looking stupid (I'm not sure if you are taking the piss) but could a buzzard lift a cat?? Buzzards look hard but mostly they eat ....worms. I think a cat is a bit too large and aggressive for a Buzzard. They get a bit interested in our small dog sometimes so we have to be careful. I couldn't see them taking a cat or small dog - too heavy for them to carry and a cat or dog will fight back On the subject of birds of prey. We have been feeding the birds for more years than i can remember nd regularly get Sparrowhawks and Peregrines taking birds attracted to the bird table - its all part of the cycle of life really. A few years ago I was putting seeds out when a peregrine swooped down to the table - i've never seen anything move so fast in my life - it was just a blur. I felt a little contact at the side of my face and its wing tip cut my cheek. I know they are fast but the speed at which it tried to take a bird was breathtaking and just awe inspiring

Twit ........ta ..........woo Some parts of the year they drive us around the bloody bend making a racket that soon wears off. Across the road from our house is a small wood and when we have to leave the windows open for nighttime ventilation they seem to be banging on all bloody night keeping everyone awake. I swear blind they do it to annoy everyone. A barn owl regularly perches at the top of the streetlight outside our house at night. It's the only steeet light in the area so must attract all the rodents - that or its got crap eyesight

For the past few days heard what I thought were woodpeckers (trill kind of sound) but thought naah can’t be, talking to a lady today and when heard the sound she confirmed that they were in fact woodpeckers, now to actually see one of the buggers, apparently they frequently come into gardens on feeders.

I get them all the time, Quez, on the various hanging peanut feeders, which they love. The most woodpeckers I've ever had in the garden at the same time is three, on three different hangers, and it was an enormous thrill to see them all at once. I'm sure you'll already have kitted yourself out with hanging peanut feeders, but if you haven't, get some ASAP and I'm sure the woodies will soon show up. If you have already got some hanging peanut feeders, you can bet they'll soon find you.

Monday - Outside in my yard, heard a small jackhammer going - looked up and saw a red-headed woodpecker in a neighbor's tree. Amazing how fast they can move their heads. It was only afterwards, I realized that it could have been Woody! (Should have tried for an autograph)

If you want to film them the best time is probably around dawn when they like to fly quite close to the ground over grasslands/fields looking for mice, shrews and voles

Well since I’ve splashed out on a wide variety of seeds, bird table and other foods I’ve seen a few pigeons and a solitary black bird, I’m furious with them. Pigeons are buggers i tend to avoid a flat surface to put feed on and make it as difficult as possible for them to reach any feeders. I use feeders with a metal "guard" to keep them off and areas the big buggers cant land. Useful for deterring any squirrels 🐿
