Interesting debate (if you look hard enough) forming on social media, a joke from Jimmy Carr's latest Netflix stand up show........ Free speech in comedy I can buy, if you don't want to be offended don't watch etc etc. But let's be clear if he'd reversed the two groups of people persecuted in the gag, or used other minorities their would be a media shit storm by now. I think he's about as funny as a dose of the shits but that's not the point, should literally nothing be off limit for comedians? Discuss....... Theres a media shit storm now I wouldn't go that far, not even close. On Twitter maybe but that's all...... |

Theres a media shit storm now It’s possible the purpose of the joke was to provoke people into thinking more about the tragedy of the Roma people murdered by the Nazis. It’s a standard comedy approach to a subject. If that was the point he’s done more to raise awareness than anyone else for a very long time. On the other hand he was possibly just looking to raise his profile by telling a joke about a very sensitive topic. I’m sure when he speaks he will say his reasons were the former while happily accepting the latter. |

Just because someone had sorted tickets. 45 minutes of “comedy” later we all got up and started a booing session which many joined in with. We got kicked out and went for a curry. A shit comedian and as has been shown during the last two years an utter plank! |

His joke about genocide of Roma/Sinti is no moe or less offensive than his jokes about paedophilia and rape.
It's ok for people to get offended. If his comments help to raise the profile of any injustice then even better.
Asking that Netflix remove the video is not a reasonable request.
Whether Jimmy Carr is funny or not funny is irrelevant to the original question posed.

Nobody has a sense of humour anymore. Their first instinct is to take offence where they used to find humour in something. Everything is taken literally. They take themselves seriously too. I’m sure this wasn’t the case a few years ago. It’s great for winding people up but the world is definitely fucked. They were also made in a different country. They have also, at the time of writing, actually been punished - unlike Carr’s. The Gypsy 'joke' whilst not in good taste, doesn't end on the "good news" punchline but goes on to emphasise just how many other groups were persecuted by Hitler, yet are very rarely mentioned when the Holocaust is discussed, Roma, Gypsies, Homosexuals etc. That part of the 'set' doesn't seem to appear much in the media...I wonder why?
