Always found the idea of patriotism to be quite odd. Then again, our country does seem to have this weird obsession with war. Why is it odd? Should we have let Hitler carry on with no opposition then in WW2? What does Hitler have to do with it? If anything he was the biggest 'patriot' of them all. He was a nationalist. Patriotism is the cult of nationalism. It trades on the unreason of mass psychology to make a variety of horrors seem acceptable, even honourable. Nations are artificial constructs, their boundaries drawn in the blood of past wars. And one should not confuse culture and nationality: there is no country on earth which is not home to more than one different but usually coexisting culture. Cultural heritage is not the same thing as national identity. The word 'nation' is also meaningless. All ‘nations’ are mongrel, a mixture of so many immigrations and mixings of peoples over time that the idea of ethnicity is largely comical, except in places where the boast has to be either that the community there remained so remote and disengaged, or so conquered, for the greater part of history, that it succeeded in keeping its gene pool ‘pure’ (a cynic might say ‘inbred’). ‘The effectiveness of the truly national leader consists in preventing his people from dividing their attention, and keeping it fixed on a common enemy.’

Too many people are still desperately clinging on to the fact that 'we beat the Germans' 3/4 of a century ago. The rest of Europe has moved on. Whilst we shouldn't forget, we should move on too.

Speaking of Germans, I wonder if they have to put up with this sort of nonsense in their country? Is there a campaign to replace 'Deutschland Uber Alles' given their colonial past?

Completely agree. It still oddly seems to shape much of our discourse in a way I really don’t understand, from our shit Churchill tribute prime minister to being linked to our justification for leaving a trading organisation. I find it bizarre

That went after the Second World War. The tune was restored as the German national anthem in the 50s but dropped the opening verse that contained those words.

Apologies to the people of France. By wearing jeans, I may be inadvertently guilty of cultural appropriation as denim was orginally invented in the town of Nimes for French factory workers. Moving forwards, I shall be mostly wearing cords.

Well - that’s the new DG making an early statement of intent. Just 24 hours in post. And he’s making populist not woke choices. I wonder if that’ll keep.

Was it just a clever bit of marketing by the Beeb? Create your own story, let the 'rumpus' begin and then do a u-turn. It should do wonders for viewing figures. (similar tactics are frequently employed by the MSM/press and, I'm confident, they bump up their declining sales a bit)

I don't have an opinion on the whole Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory thing because I couldn't give a shit one way or the other. However, I'll wager that's the first time the words "joy" and "Morrissey" have been seen together...

I read that the bbc had a seminar for all the football presenters to stop them using certain phrases and cliches, phrases which have some historical link to slavery and whatnot. Amongst this list of don't is that they're to stop using "pace" and "power" when describing the attributes of black players, as it ties in with sterotypes. Total nonsense of course, because how else are you going to describe pace and power when you see it? But it became completely laughable that evening as I was watching a Gareth Bale compilation and consistently heard the commentators lauding his phenomenal pace and power...

I would have thought 'pace' and 'power' are positive words anyway? Good luck next time Adebayo Akinfenwa's on live TV (re: power!) What's next to go- 'rob the ball' or managers 'blasting their players' maybe? It's getting to Pythonesque levels of ridiculousness.

I wonder how many black people have watched a football match, heard a black player described as 'pacy', 'powerful' or both and thought 'I'm not having that' and sent a strongly worded email? Not many, I'm wagering 😂 This 'wrongthink' bollocks is usually dreamt up by white people.

Minor correction to the above: they haven’t been told to stop using “pace” or “power”. Also worth noting that the seminar was run in conjunction with the PFA, which conducted research into racial bias in commentary. Still, don’t let the facts stop the important business of getting cross about stuff that isn’t happening. As you were
