In Royal Stoke on a ward awaiting a operation on my ankle .
Two people on ward with me
There is an American who is an academic and has the name Plumb
So I have Professor Plumb on my right and on left Paul ex Mich , Shop Steward and Stoke fan .
Inevitably the conversation turned to football
Paul is 12 years older than me and his first game was Stoke v Newcastle with Milburn playing , the uncle of the Charlton brothers. He cannot recall the score
My first game was in March 62 a 0-0 draw against Swansea Town.
His most memorable game was the 7-0 win against Lincoln with Coleman scoring 7 goals .
Mine was the 74 win against Leeds when they unbeaten
Nice to swap football stories with a fellow Stokie.

It was a record for a winger at the time, probably still is. Remember it well.

Does your American friend speak knowledgeably about Soccerball, Goal Minders and the next World Series?

The Tim Coleman day was one to remember. Put a treble bet on in the bookies going down Honeywall to the match and got a winner in the first race. Saw Colemans 7 of the 8 that thrashed Lincoln and went back up Honeywall to the bookies to find I have won a treble £11.00! Straight back down to Stoke and bought mesen a suit of the peg from Burtons. A day I will never forget!

Anybody have an idea why he was always referred to as 'Tim' when his name was actually 'Neville'? Just curious.

The game was played in February with a sprinkling of snow on the pitch, Stoke scored 8, ( Coleman 7 King 1) Those were the days!

It's an all-time record for the top two divisions, and a post-war record for any division (joint with one other player). Never knew about it until now!

I was a schoolboy doing a paper round for Farnell's in Penkhull at the time and I think he (always reluctantly) paid 5 shillings a week. I know I should have been too young to bet, but I always said it was for my father.

I know I should have been too young to bet, but I always said it was for my father. Just looked it up, £11 in 1957 would be worth £266 in 2020, 5 bob in 1957 would worth £6 today. Average weekly wage in 1957 was 241s 6d which would be £12.07 in today's money and that would be worth £290.00 today. I was 2 months old the day of the Lincoln game, I'd been born on 01.12.56, we beat Swansea at home 4-1, Tim Coleman scored that day too, along with King & Bowyer (2).

Interesting how they refer to football as soccer. Funny how it's fell out of usage. Growing up in the 60s we called it nogger, soccer or football...if anything 'football' was a bit formal.

As we are talking about big wins thought I would bring this posting back.
Highest score for a Stoke player in one game.
My dad used to talk about this 8 nil home win..
Tim Neville Coleman take a bow 7 goals from a winger..
Any body on here who went to the game ?? Laurie Leslie or Old Stokie

touch and go whether the game was played due to heavy snow. I was 15 at the time and stood on the Boothen End. Memorable performance by Coleman.

We scored one in the next game and then didn't score for the next 6 games. We only scored 8 (eight) goals in the last 10 games of the season matching the 8 we scored against Lincoln.

I was there with Boothen Ender Bill. It was surreal watching Tim banging them in every time he came down the wing. A game never to be forgotten. Yes, Johnny King scored the other. He was a cracking centre forward for us.
