"Staying up feels better than play-off win". Not for me.... staying up feels like you've averted a situation you should never have been in in the first place.... a play-off win ( or promotion in general) feels like you've achieved something great !!

I agree with him. When you are promoted you have the good feeling for most of the season (being near the top and winning games), but staying up means you've been pretty shit all season and lost a lot of games and generally been feeling down and beaten, but when you stay up you can finally celebrate and there is a bigger release of pent up emotion I would imagine.

And that when he joined Villa in October last season, they were 13th and in their third season in the Championship, meaning it wasn't his fault they were in that situation in the first place?
So i'd say he's in a good postion to judge.
Of course the fact that he has now received a hefty bonus for keeping them up (per Sky Sports), as well as preserving his job for another bit might have blurred his objectivity slightly, but still....

It just depends on the context and circumstances, obviously. Staying up in 2009 felt amazing. Staying up this year feels, if anything, faintly embarrassing.

Someone is confusion thrill with relief. Gouranga. Thrilled to reach premier league in 2008. Relieved we didn't end up in League one next season. Don't understand why you would be confused 🤔🤔

Celebrating (near) failure, does seem a bit over the top...but maybe they were thinking of the money

I think because they have been in the bottom 3 for nearly 6 months and with 3 games left they were 7 points from safety. It was a great escape for them (so my Villa fan mate in Lanzarote tells me)

It'a a massive achievement for any club outside the top 6 to stay in that League. The odds are stacked against you. Isn't it only Everton outside the top 6 who have never been relegated from the Prem. All those others are going to come a cropper at some stage so enjoy it while you can.

Alternatives were revolving door Watford or Bournemouth (let's not even go there)

He was doing a fantastic job of bigging himself up and making it look like he’s done an amazing job. In reality, 35 points and a shocking goals difference would have seen them relegated 9 times out of 10.

Promotion in 2008 or staying up ghis year???? promotion in 2008 however top flight last day survival in 1984 was right up there It was, in terms of relief, but already-relegated Wolves hardly turned up on the day. I found the last day survival in 2003 against Reading a great day ( after a week of feeling sick with nerves ) but it was still 90 minutes of total stress !

Very lucky manager this year.
Villa have spent more than any other team this season yet scrape through on the last day.
(With the Sheff Utd disallowed goal to thank)

Sacked before the end of next season is my safer one.

Did he not just do exactly what we and probably all 90 other clubs would of done. The money spent is irrelevant. Some of the quotes I've seen on here about our wonderful escape I half expected us to have an open top bus .
He did nothing wrong really.

Sacked before the season starts is my bold prediction. Sacked before the end of next season is my safer one. Sky Sports News was confidently speculating the other day that Smith was going to be replaced by some Portugese dude any time now.
Then later that day they were reporting from Villa Park that the club had informed them that Smith's position was "100% secure", he was due a big bonus for keeping them up and there would be a transfer kitty to spend in the summer!
Today's news is that Villa's (Spanish) Sporting Director, Jesus Garcia Pitarch, is to leave forthwith, after "disagreement" with the club's CEO, Christian Purslow:
It seems clear that there was a power-struggle behind the scenes, with Pitarch wanting his mate in as manager to bolster his position, while Purslow wanted to shift the blame for Villa's disastrous transfer policy onto Pitarch: "Villa were committed to a full review of their transfer policy after spending £118m on new players last summer, many of whom failed to meet expectations. Villa subsequently brought in goalkeeper Pepe Reina, midfielder Danny Drinkwater and striker Mbwana Samatta in January."
Smith is one of the most agreeable blokes in the game, and a Villa fan to the core, but I don't envy him having to work in a poisonous environment like that.
And that's before you consider that that scumbag John Terry was foisted upon him as a coach.

They are absolutely garbage. Even McGinn looks half the player he was now. Merson summed them up perfectly a few weeks back, they look like a school team who are all crap but have one boy who’s head and shoulders above the rest.

Something along those lines after the game , if i could put it up on here I would but I can’t , his dry sense of humour is unreal , he couldn’t work out why all the villa players were celebrating after playing shit all season

Probably survive next season. I think WBA , play off winners will struggle along with Brighton Southampton, Even possibly Sheff U (dreaded 2nd season) and Palace.
That said, if Grealish leaves they’re in Shit Street, I think.

Not sure I agree on Smith his Comments when we played them under Rowett and got a draw were disrespectful and arrogant along the lines “ raised their game cause it’s us etc “ I

Possibly because he broke his ankle in about October and was out for 6 months ? Just a thought
