Best of a bad bunch. Nothing to blow his trumpet about. So glad that this season is over. The only person to come out of this season with any glory is Michael O'Neill. Yes he is Irish, and no he does not push his politics down peoples throats every two minutes.

I wouldn't say he was the best player this season but he has consistently played for the badge all season, so on the whole deserves to be player of the season. If he wins it again something is seriously wrong.

A good choice, as a few have said, always gives his all, sometimes he’s good, sometimes poor, but he gives a crap.

I think people started to change their opinion about him on boxing Day .
He ran himself into the ground ( alongside Joe Allen ) after butland twice stayed rooted to his line for two successive corner kicks fired across his six yard box .Sheff utd said thanks very much twice and headed the ball into our net twice , to go 2 v 1 up .
He was great with Joe Allen . Let butland do the shouting ( who was he shouting at ? Himself ? ) And just tried to pressure Sheffield into making a mistake .
Eventually he pulled a hamstring or a calf muscle trying to force a last minute corner . And just kept on running ( in pain ) to force the winning corner kick .
Great attitude , you would have to really hate him , not to like his attitude .
Crap winger compared to Matty etherington , but with stats ten times as good as Tom Ince , what does that make Ince ?

I don't know most players or what they think unlike yourself but if someone dishes out abuse, irrelevant if they deserve it or not then don't come crying when they get it back. It’s not irrelevant at all. They are paid servants of our club, highly paid “entertainers” it’s their job. If they don’t like other people’s opinions they are definitely in the wrong trade. It can’t be nice being abused, no shit? But when you are playing shit or not trying and being paid more in a week than most fans earn in a year, expect some grief, meh! Have some dignity, bite your lip and go home in your Ferrari to your mansion and you page 3 wannabe after. Sure as as shit they won’t be the first person in the world to get a bit of abuse and they won’t be the last, but they at least get paid a kings ransom for it! So if someone was to give you abuse you'd just take it? says a lot about you The more money you earn should change things should it? It's 100% irrelevant. You're the one crying about it

It really baffles me when people say he's had a 'brilliant' season. Him and the rest haven't been brilliant at all. That's why we were fighting for our lives not to get relegated. Not a very good footballer, bang average at best. But his work rate has stood out from a squad that has massively underperformed this season.

The bloke can't win, he gets dogs abuse for years, sometimes gives banter back (cupping ears, shushing etc) and gets lambasted for it. However this is the issue we have as a society when it comes to "giving a bit of abuse." Banter and camaraderie yes (to an extent), abuse has NO place anywhere. Having an "acceptable level of abuse" due to their pay packets is the exact reason why we are yet to see a footballer come out and the exact reason we have a mental health problem within the game. No-one, no matter how big their pay packet should be expected to accept abuse and "bite your lip and tough it out." It's this kind of attitude and approach that has led to the mental health complications many men face today as they are expected to tough it out and not speak up. Abuse is NEVER okay.

It shows the sheer stupidity of people if they think like that. Usually it's the ones who dish it out and can't take it back. Very tough giving it out from the safety of a stand or on the internet then sobbing like a Banshee because they react. If they live live in a mansion or a cardboard box it makes no difference. Some people like the person who made that comment really are ignorant cowards.

It would surely have to be Clucas or McClean, I'd vote for McClean. As someone mentioned above, his performance at the end against Sheffield Wednesday, when he was almost dead dead on his feet, was extraordinary. Beyond that though, he's the one player you can rely on to always be giving 100% and driving us forward right to the final whistle. I think that was the defining moment of the season. Going into injury time we were bottom, 6 minutes later were out of the bottom 3

Yes he is Irish, and no he does not push his politics down peoples throats every two minutes. Have to agree with this post. In a appalling season a trier gets player of the season. If James McClean is one of our three/four attacking options next season we can forget and thoughts of top 6. We need pace and power going forward not a predictable work horse. Left side of a 3-5-2 I can just about stomach allowing us two forwards. Playing 1 up front with McClean severely restricts us as a team going forwards.

JM doesn't push his politics down people's throats every 2 minutes, he doesn't wear a poppy because of what had happened on bloody Sunday in the estate he grew up in, he's said he would wear one if it was just for the word war's. He's done nice things for people in a less fortunate position than himself. I'm not saying he's a saint but at times some people portray him as something he's not

Proves my point re your average Stoke fans football knowledge. Bayern thinks McClean is shite - wins player of the year Bayern thinks Smith is shite - finishes the season with second highest number of assists Bayern thinks Davies is shite - finishes the season as No.1, transforming the defence There is definitely a point here about football knowledge, but not the one you'd like to think.

The defence is the one area that look as bad as ever. Davies was ok but this hailing him as the saviour is amusing.

No-one is hailing him as the saviour, what they are doing with him and the others you despise so are incapable of praising is giving credit where it is due. Davies makes the whole defence look so much more at ease than they did with Butland, he's not the messiah but he's improved the team overall. Smith got more assists than Knockaert, Helder Costa, Hoilett and your choice for Player of the Year. You do it all the time, back yourself into a corner without the grace or humility to admit you are just wrong.
