Tragic indeed. I'm completely ignorant of Drill Music, does it glamorise knives? RIP It’s awful. The songs if you can call them that are often aligned to gangs and where individuals / gangs brag about stabbings they’ve done or threats of what they will do to others. Threatening other postcodes is common place. It’s like rap on speed but is far more personal and targetted. It’s often the touch paper for murders because those being threatened won’t just turn the other cheek or back down as it’s a loss of face. **Warning re the content of the video is offensive / could cause upset** This one’s had 73m views. One of the rappers saying how when you stab someone you “aim for the chest or higher.” It’s a huge problem and is openly used on social media and has far more impact than people think. I know I rabbit on about my concerns re London but this sort of stuff isn’t kids playing cowboys and indians this is a dangerous precedent. Is this particular genre more relevant in London? I watched a bit, understood very little of it TBF, think I need a translator 🤷 I imagine a mix of that, lots of young people that haven't met before drinking more alcohol than they're used to can be quite the explosive combination. As to which is more culpable of the two, the music or the alcohol, I know where my money would go if I had to bet.

They’re very fixed on their appearance and arresting them is like arresting an athlete I’d imagine. The bigger gangs tend to be in the cities though they’re not unique to london I read somewhere where London had 40 teen gangs but it may be more. I know it’s the Sun and it’s old but this is a guide. It’s probably worse now if anything. www.thesun.co.uk/news/7201715/map-london-gangs-territories/amp/In relation to language. Here’s a few words of note “Dissing” (insulting) and “bragging” (boasting) tracks reference “skengs”, “ramsays”, “shanks”, “swords” (meaning knives) as well as “spinners”, “mashes”, “burners” (meaning handguns), and celebrate “dipping” or “cheffing” (stabbing), “frying” or “wooshing” (shooting), “gliding” or “touring” (entering enemy territory) and “duppying” (killing). Unfortunately they’re openly used on social media by kids who’d never dream of stabbing or hurting someone because they think it makes them edgy. Very sad.

In this particular instance I'd say alcohol was very much a feature, they stopped to pick some up on the way to the party. At an open invitation 16 year old birthday party on an estate I wouldn't expect them to be drinking squash and eating cake.

They probably drink at the parties but it doesn’t hugely impact on the gang attacks as the parties are on the whole for their crew. Alcohol can impact negatively on their ability to fight too. With modern technology these gangs are organised. Most (not all) attacks are when opposing gangs are in the wrong area though that wasn’t the case for poor Mikey.

Just bloody awful. Girl puts open invitation to her 16th birthday on WhatsApp. 80 teenagers turn up. Drugs, booze, drill and rap. What could possibly go wrong? Well three morons with knives is what went wrong. The story is harrowing, the medics arrived within 10 minutes including a trauma doctor who said that the very deep knife wound to the base of the neck was not survivable. So let’s look at the reporting though describing the weapon as a "zombie knife" which in itself is provocative because it links the whole tragedy to video game culture, which imo has quite a bit to do with motivating kids to carry knives. 244 knife related deaths compared to 27 gun related deaths in 2023.

You have to question what the parents of the girl were thinking. Totally irresponsible to allow it to take place. At the very least put some adults there to see who was going in and out or pay for some security. Were they there at all even? Badly managed house parties are a recipe for disaster especially with social media. Outside Mikey’s family it’s clearly had a huge impact on others. The officer, the neighbours, friends. You don’t get over something like what happened.

Only an opinion but these characters make Punk rockers look like Mary Poppins. There may be some similarities but I see Punk more about anarchy whereas drill is about violence, killing, money, greed, drug dealing and treating women like sex objects. The thing with punk also was that it always seemed like it was for a small group whereas drill utilises social media and is very personal rather than a generic message. Perhaps it’s naivity but knife crime feels like an epidemic. Maybe it is exposure but it doesn’t feel like it.

I remember vividly all the concerns around punk rock, it encouraged me to go to a lot of gigs to see what the fuss was about, they were all depicted as violent and aggressive.

It’s because cannabis is illegal Put 4 strangers in a room with a bottle of whisky and they're likely to start a fight, put 4 strangers in a room with some weed and they're more likely to start a band 🙂 If those kids at that party were smoking weed instead of getting pissed the outcome would probably have been different so you may be right. In a way.

Drill music is the steam released from a pressure cooker. A by product of the austerity and lack of hope surrounding young people in this country. Its not the cause, its an effect in my opinion.
The young man in the article who died wasn't a member of gangs or walking around with knives stabbing people.
It's easier to point to a genre of music and stigmatise it and blame it as the causation rather than politicians look at their record and take accountability for the impacts of their decision making.

Not sure if you’ve watched the video mate but there’s a couple of things of note - Mikey (YM) had a popular drill song that they played on the evening itself at the party. - He was found in posession of a knife himself previously which it was claimed he was looking after for somebody. In relation to the lack of hope it’s one of many factors that have an impact on knife crime. Drill isn’t just a music genre it’s a way of communication and sending messages to other gangs through social media which probably explains why the majority of the time there faces are covered (because some of there comments could result in them being arrested whether it’s because they’re making threats or because they’re admitting to crimes they’ve been involved in). It reminds me a lot of what goes on in the US with the murders of numerous rappers. One thing I think we can all agree on is it’s tragic what happened to Mikey and is a terribly sad loss of a young life.

What i would say is that we seem to be a lot better at recording stats than we were in the 70s. It’s really hard to find anything from that era. Crimes changed a lot over the years though. Far less Bank robberies - mainly due to cashless society Serial killers - Far more trails re offenders eg ANPR, CCTV, DNA Far more Fraud Social media offences eg telecommunication / harassment County lines / exploitation

I just went to most recent page in the thread and recognised the name from reading an article on BBC earlier today. Didn't realise he was found with a knife on him though. The article sort of gave the impression he was a loving boy who found some popularity through his music but wasn't really involved in gangs. I did skim through it so maybe missed the knife bit. Not sure if your video was something different from what I read or maybe I just didn't pick up on the knife bit when I read it earlier. I think with music there will always be correlations but don't think it should be the focus. In the sense that I bet there's a correlation between North face clothing and crime but banning North face won't solve the issue. And for every youth wearing that brand involved in crime, there's another middle aged man wearing it on his weekend hike. It's all very deflating and feels like we're just sleepwalking in the wrong direction. This country needs radical changes.

What I would say is since Covid the night time economy has changed with 1000s of pubs closing. People don’t go out as much as they used to (less money) that would impact on night time violence in a positive way which could result in less alcohol related murders in / out of clubs / bars. Without more specifics (age, where it happened, MO) it’s difficult to see the reason the figures haven’t changed it could be as simple as less pub fights being counter balanced by more gang related stabbings. Life’s constantly changing comparing just figures is a dangerous game without more details around lifestyle and other factors.

The link lists the amount of stabbings each year since 2008, in which year the number of deaths by stabbing were more than they were last year. Since that was 2 years before drill music was thought of in America it's difficult to see any correlation or causation between it and the amount of deaths by stabbing. Those stats are homicides involving knives though mate rather than all stabbings. You’re quite right 81% increase in Police-recorded offences involving a knife or sharp instrument in the last 10 years (up to December 2023.) I’d say that’s a more telling figure. benkinsella.org.uk/knife-crime-statistics/

It's a possibility, however in a country with a population of around 70 million and an average death rate of around 250 per year which is something like 0.0000003 percent isn't something I would call an epidemic. I'm not sure I'd describe the drug deaths as an epidemic and that figure will be around 20 times the deaths by stabbing this year 🤷

Approximately a third of those that died last year were under 25, that doesn't seem a particularly high proportion for an age group you would think would be closest associated with the music.
