Most of the criticism of Starmer is plain silly. We won't know what will be done until we get the budget. Only then can we pull him to pieces if he backslides into version 2 of austerity. Personally, I don't like him but I won't make a judgement based on innuendo and what the right wing press say.
OS.

An excellent video on Starmer. Not everyone will agree with all of it but it's a very good summary.

I remember when the contest used to be between estate agents and politicians for the most untrustworthy people. Nobody seems to mention wide boy estate agents anymore 😆 I was an estate agent for a year or so when I first left university. I couldn't handle the amount of bullshit I had to spout daily so got out of the game 😂

I've never understood why it just can't be written in plain language instead of this piffly nonsense that they keep insisting on. The amount of times I sign shit cos the lawyer tells me it says what I need is quite frightening when half the time I've not got a scooby doo about what I've just read 😆

Lawyers have been struck off for fare dodging on a train. Any dishonesty offence is career ending. Lawyers are also very good at creating arguments to suit their case. They are very good at defending the indefensible. But as a lawyer I would say all this.

I was intrigued enough to read the rest. It was full of errors, the solicitor was bright red as she corrected it on the PC as we went along - I probably paid for the time rather than them paying me for the service 😂 People had been singing that very document for years without noticing a thing 🤷

Personally, I don't like him but I won't make a judgement based on innuendo and what the right wing press say. OS. You are probably correct. I have two takes on what the new government are up to: 1. They are engaged in hyperbole because the economy is actually quite healthy and so they have to lay in on thick or no one will believe them. Economy is growing, inflation is down, debt is high but less than most of the G7, BUT the governments finances are in a mess and the last lot promised lots of things not budgeted. There is also a lot of dissatisfaction by the less well off, those waiting for an operation, state of housing, rivers, etc. and a potential bow wave of expenditure required to fix things. The Tories have actually poured money into health with lots more staff and it has to be paid for. Not that you would recognise the extra staff due to the lost work hours due to strikes. www.england.nhs.uk/2024/01/record-number-of-nurses-and-midwives-working-in-nhs/#:~:text=NHS%20England%20data%20for%20November,winter%20compared%20with%20last%20year. When the budget comes I suspect it will not be as bad as people feared. Yes there will be tightening of the spend and increased taxes but most people will be relieved. 2. My second theory is a bit more complicated. The main promise Labour have made is change. They have set growth as the priority. To deliver growth you need to invest. For the government to invest they need to constrain expenditure on other things and find some extra revenue. For business to invest they need low interest rates, which are not helped by high government borrowing. So the plan is more long term: tighten belts now, to release funds to invest in the future and reap the benefits in 3 or 4 years time - just in time for the next election.

What’s wrong with taxing rich people a bit more? Why is everyone against that when Labour are talking about doing it but when it was the tories not raising taxes for rich people (they cut NI for example which disproportionately benefited higher earners) then those same people kept shouting “tax the rich”.

Why is everyone against that when Labour are talking about doing it but when it was the tories not raising taxes for rich people (they cut NI for example which disproportionately benefited higher earners) then those same people kept shouting “tax the rich”. We cant afford it mate. The top 5% of earners are not the richest people necessarily so he right not to increase taxes on the top 5% of earners. I can’t afford to buy a house for my family but am in the top 5% of earners from my earned income. Taxing the rich means taxing capital wealth. That’s where the gap between the rich and the poor is highest. Remember, i am taxed overall at a higher rate than billionaires like Rishi Sunak. If you want to make the country fairer, at least tax the richest as much as me. Plus he promised not to raise income tax and NI on earned income, and VAT (save for on private school fees). So if he raises income tax on high earners of earned income, he is breaking his manifesto from a few months ago and every one will be critical. He could also increase taxes on unearned income, which is predominantly received by the richest - shareholders and rental income. I see no issue in increasing dividend income for water company shareholders for example! A few percentage points added to their tax bill would raise loads.

Do you have a problem with a Party being honest with the Electorate before an Election and sets out in its Manifesto what it will or won't do based on current finances rather than what they said they would like to do two years previously? I won't name them again I've done so several times Labour didn't include Wealth Taxes in its Manifesto but it was obvious they were going to introduce them I know you had no opportunity to vote for any of the Mainland Party's but your continued disgruntledment at Labour appears to be that they are doing what they said they would do rather than what you would like them to do.

Do you have a problem with a Party being honest with the Electorate before an Election 🤣🤣🤣🤣 honest. I think the person with the biggest problem is the one who is happy to jump on all tory criticism but when his beloved compulsive liar is criticised they want to challenge all the critics and question their motives.
