Was the message changed from "Stay at Home" to cover this situation? Did they know it was coming out shortly?
Was it a rushed decision hence the many grey areas of the new message and all the subsequent clarifications?
I guess when you're on a 260 mile drive it's a priority to stay alert ...

It's outrageous. The nation's health is at stake here, people's actual lives are at stake and they're just making it up as they go along. If they'd been asked these EXACT same questions before Cummings did what he did, they would have been outraged at being asked such obviously stupid questions. It is utterly scandalous. Talking to professionals working in health service today on Zoom who make up a social group I belong to, they are absolutely despairing about this latest revelation after the all the effort they are putting in. These are people who are not political by instinct. They've had mixed messages all along, no support (apart from superficial, hypocritical clapping) they are stressed enough about an anticipated second spike. They've had to suffer the loss of friends & colleagues who are no longer with us. They are really so fed up and quite angry with the way this is being managed, they have absolutely no confidence in, nor respect for this Government at all. They feel they've been left out to dry.

Death rates and infections continuing to fall. Restrictions easing. But all the lefties can do is get into a frenzy about Cumming maybe breaking regulations and Boris not doing the press conference every night And for the record, yes I think Cumming should resign or be sacked. But it’s hardly a major issue compared to the overall situation We weren't even at the peak of infections and deaths when Cummings went on his jolly. People excusing this are embarrassing themselves.

Why did nobody push the government on the "coincidence" that cummings did the journey on the week of his mothers birthday? It would be easily batted away with a question back about why do you know when his mums birthday is and something about GDPR. Isnt it on companies house?

He should go no doubt, but hardly the same scenario is it. it's ignoring advice so it is the same. Not nearly the same scale though.

I guess the principle would still be the same an it's nothing to do with his mums birthday. It was just a coincidence and isn't relevant* to him travelling up there given his statement. (*i'm not endorsing that viewpoint)

People all over the country are now going to use their 'common sense' and when they're sick, simply get in their cars, visit petrol stations, public toilets, motorway services, all the while spreading the virus. How on earth has that briefing been allowed to happen? The majority are not that stupid and won’t do that. You don't need the majority to get the virus spreading again, do you? The way we ALL ultimately get out of this, is by ensuring the track, trace and isolate protocols work, which will mean that thousands of people over the coming months, are going to be expected to stay at home for 14 days, when they don't even have any symptoms. How on earth can we expect people to comply with this when the Government's top advisor blantantly ignores the rules when he and his family are actually infectious? What Cummings did was stupid and unforgivable but what is absolutely shameful for the nation, is that the Government have today attempted to justify what he did. Not only could it set back our fight against the virus but could do so with tragic consequences.

Not nearly the same scale though. I'll accept that you're just missing the point. Nor really, I said he should go, but comparing 200 plus people, who aren't all related, in the same room/venue isn't the same at all.

Just get him to say he was sorry, he shouldn't have done it in hindsight and just apologise. He'd get stick but it would blow over. Instead they try to legitimise it - will they ever bloody learn. I respect someone far more if they just say sorry and apologise. Rather than try to cover their bloody arses.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but here are the stats for your chance of dying of Covid, based on your age (shamelessly pinched from Private Eye). I've handily accompanied them with some comparable odds.
Age 0 - 14: 1 in 5,337,226 (getting struck by lightning is 1 in 1.2 million)
Age 15 - 24: 1 in 279,550 (getting killed by a meteorite is 1 in 250,000)
Age 25 - 44: 1 in 44,423 (dying in a workplace accident is 1 in 43,500)
Age 45 - 64: 1 in 4,388 (dying of influenza is 1 in 5,000)
Age 65 - 74: 1 in 1,143 (dying in a house fire is 1 in 1,000)
Age 75 - 90: 1 in 225 (the lifetime risk of dying in a car crash is 1 in 240)
Age 90+: 1 in 81 (the risk of driving into a deer in is Minnesota 1 in 80)

Highly unlikely he could have driven from london to Durham without stopping for fuel. Who filled his car up? His young son? Highly unlikely his young son wouldn't want to stop for the toilet or food? Presumably they took a picnic and a Jerry can to piss in? 270 miles Most cars can do 400 miles. I spent years travelling between the North East and South Wales every week, typically 310 miles and never once stopped for petrol. Just saying like

Hundreds of family members and friends could not attend my Mum's funeral service due to government advice/legislation. Turns out it was all a lie because you can drive the length of England if you deem it an emergency.... resign now Cummings you utter sack of shit. Mate sorry to hear about your Mum, a Stokie Mum is a Stokie Mum to us all.

A gamble indeed. Cummings has made it his business to make an enemy of the press. They're hardly likely to let it go.

If there was a general election next week these fuckers wouldn't be getting my vote again. Johnson's terminal absence from public broadcasts puts the top hat on it, i can't believe the PM of a country could be soooo missing in a time of crisis. Looks like i fell for the bluster and bullshit.
