Those data tables come from this link, you can compare dates if you're feeling morbid. Also put into a single table here. The bright news of the day: intensive care patient numbers fell a tiny bit in Emilia Romagna. I know enough statistics that I realise it's pretty meaningless and things could still get work, but I'm just desperate for some good news.

You honestly believe there is no thinking, 26.5m employed, 4.6m self employed people got to concentrate on the majority first, the 4.6m self employed will require more tailored measures and they have already delayed IR35 and people having to pay their self assessment tax. The IR35 climbdown is major although I'm hearing that end users have already pushed contractors into the PAYE system rather than have any future battle with HMRC. In many cases that PAYE will be operated by agencies so one has to hope that the end users continue with the contracts. Unfortunately it was due to start on the 6th April so there is a limbo period before employment starts. Alot of bigger companies just binned contractors so they dont get caught holding the baby, if they went through an agency and the agency said they were outside of IR35 and HMRC decided differently then HMRC can still goto them and ask for the money so they may as well just take people on permanent contracts. This might see the end of IR35 hard to argue people are employed then only give them SSP.

Lombardy is the region where the first domestic outbreaks started and they were never able to identify patient zero. Lord knows what damage has been done but that's why Lombardy is worst hit. I don't know why I liked it because I don't like it at all. It's bloody terrifying. Is everyone observing the lockdown or are they doing the usual Italian 'shrug and carry on' thing? I thought people were following it but I guess it's not enough. Still too many out and about

Another thing from Private Eye: the latest figures show that the number of deaths for February was lower than it has been by decades, and down 5000 on January, thanks to people being vigilant, washing their hands frequently and other aspects of basic good hygiene. Hopefully that will stick after all of this is done.

A really, really daft question here but could this virus get into the food or water chain and if so, how long could it live for?

Is this what you’re talking about. “Boris bashers need to cut it out” It hasn’t even started. Boris has been exposed. Get over it & stop pouting. The Torys have had a propaganda machine working for them in form of the media for decades, sniping at anyone who argued with them. FFS, Until this hit the fan, they’d stopped giving the National broadcasters interviews. “He’s been weighed in the scales of righteousness & found wanting”⚖️ I'd reply if I could even understand what it meant to be honest all I can see is what looks like some rather thinly disguised distasteful glee at the thought of people dying as long as Boris gets blamed, stay classy bath.

I think that's what I said The whole thing has been a farce for decades and it's good to see the government dealing with it public sector three years ago and private sector now. The additional tax on dividends was the right move as well. Contractors need to have the usual employment rights to go with the tax take.

In all fairness only the first paragraph is mine, it’s not a message of hopelessness, it’s one of the scientific facts to date. I agree that the “no tools “ statement is possibly slightly too harsh, but having witnessed that complete bellend Tim Martin on sky news this morning trying to tell people that you can’t catch the virus in a pub, perhaps the above is the balance on the scales that is required. Stay safe Oh - and one other fun fact - the reign of Henry VIII was two hundred years after the Black Death. Henry VIII did indeed use a form of self isolation. In 1528, Henry slept in a different bed every night and not because of a choice of mistresses. It was fear of disease that drove him to move almost daily that summer. The king was terrified of sweating sickness, a deadly epidemic that is nearly forgotten today. Scientists are still fascinated by the mysterious disease, which swept through Europe multiple times during the Tudor period. Beginning in 1485, five epidemics plagued England, Germany and other European countries. But the epidemic’s origins and even the identity of the disease are still murky. There was good reason to be scared of sweating sickness. It came on without any warning and did not seem preventable. People would feel a sudden sense of dread, then be overtaken with headache, neck pains, weakness and a cold sweat that covered the entire body. Fever, heart palpitations and dehydration followed. Within three to 18 hours, 30 to 50 percent of people afflicted with the illness were dead.

I have heard one or two references in the last few days of a new or different sympton of an infection, where the affected individual loses their sense of taste and has a "metallic" feeling in their throat. I think a Sky news chap asked about something similar in todays Government press conference. Anybody know if this is a new manifestation of the Coronavirus infection or something different confusing the issues? The loss of taste and smell is supposedly what people who dont show any symptoms may get.

I've just actually had a very weird cold that has lasted since around the end of January, before all this properly kicked off, mixed with a very strange cough. Lack of taste or smell was also very prevalent. Never had the fever though and chest was clear.

Largely north and even more specific to lombardy, milan and surrounding area and Bergamo the worst hit. I've just edited my post. If Students figures are right 2/3 of the deaths are in Lombardy alone. Why? What are they doing or not doing in Lombardy? That's horrific. Just take care. Lot’s of this pandemic doesn’t really add up.

I've been out today but literally everyone I met on an 8 mile run was either in singles or couples apart from three runners running together. The outside cafe was operating as a takeaway only and they'd placed red tape crosses on the floor with notices for people to stand on them whilst queuing 6 feet apart. The handwashing in the toilet was impressive. People were giving everyone a wide berth.

That’s just in England from the look of it We're on the same path as Italy you'd think. We've been too slow shutting pubs. Having said that, I nipped to Sainsburys today and saw groups of kids mingling together, and adults too for that matter. Some don't seem to grasp it whatsoever. It's a pretty simple concept. Keep your distance. Don't socialise or mingle in numbers. Isolate. Wash your hands. In fact, forget "in numbers", dont come into contact with anybody if you can help it. How do people fail to grasp the gravity of this situation? Barring my wife and 2 kids, I haven't come into contact with another human being for over a week now (including parents, siblings, friends etc). Lock it down.

I've just actually had a very weird cold that has lasted since around the end of January, before all this properly kicked off, mixed with a very strange cough. Lack of taste or smell was also very prevalent. Never had the fever though and chest was clear. Coronavirus-hit Health Minister Nadine Dorries today said she had lost all sense of taste and smell as a result of her battle with the deadly disease.
The 62-year-old, who was the first MP to be diagnosed with Covid-19, said she can only tell the difference between warm and cold and nothing else.
The Mid Bedfordshire MP, who has been quarantined at her home with her mother - who was visiting for a birthday party - since a positive test last week, is on the mend however.
She also revealed that her 84-year-old mother has now returned to her own home and was 'struggling to understand what all the fuss is about'.
Ms Dorries tweeted: 'A side effect of #coronavirus for me is the fact that I have lost 100% of taste and smell. Absolutely zero of both, so weird.
'Eating and drinking warm or cold that's all I can tell. No point in putting a tea bag in the water.'Link.

Yes they said this is what asymptomatic people might experience and still be contagious, two ear throat and nose consultants are being treated for the virus because of this they think this is how they caught it.

I went to the Megadeth show on Jan 31st at Wembley Arena, and about a week after it I had had no smell, no taste, snotty nose, rubbish in chest, and felt worse than any cold I've ever had. It was could barely move out of bed on day 1 of it bad. I never thought of attributing it to the coronavirus though, at the time I just thought some fucker near us had a bog standard cold and passed it on. I wonder...

I'm pretty certain that I had it in 2019. It was not nice at all, and took many months to recover from.

A loss of taste and smell is pretty common with flu and common colds too. If you had a productive cough and a snotty nose, especially in the month of January it could well have just been that.
The only way we’ll know is the post hoc Antibody test.

London could be in for a severe round of fucks. You can’t stop people from buying food, so there will always be some risk. Stoke on trent is relatively spread out in comparison. The North of Italy is a bit of an anomaly?!

I've been looking into the 80% of wages mentioned yesterday by Sunak for HMRC.
So the 80% is eligible for those who become a Furloughed worker with their employer. So you remain on the books, and take no work on, and the 80% is paid so you're not laid off. It doesn't seem like it's there for people not laid off, regardless of if your employer is going to be in a dire financial situation or not.
I suspect a lot of employers will be making their workers furloughed in that case.
