www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/stoke-city-transfer-news-live-4536973With changes in personnel, are you still getting a set formation and team to do a job this season?MON: I think so. With how we play at the moment we certainly have the players to cope. We’re not short on centre-backs and we’re not short on strikers. Where we probably had an issue last season was our options in the wide areas were a bit of a challenge to us. We subsequently ended up having Tyrese playing wide for us in a number of games in a different system. It’s a constant refining of your squad through this period but equally you’re trying to win games and make sure your numbers are right to take you through the season. Our numbers at the moment are too high, there’s no doubt about that. We can’t change that unless the opportunity is there for players to look elsewhere. So far that hasn’t been the case. I know what I want from the squad. I think we’ve got some good young players now who are much closer to the first team than we had previously. The challenge they present is to the more established players from last season. We have to make sure we continue with that going forward, that sort of mind set in terms of what we’re looking for from the squad. Ideally you should need more than 22 players, without including goalkeepers, to get through the season.

Fair comments but doesn't playing Smith and Fox mean that's (going to a back 5) is going to happen naturally? Smith has a really good track record of goals and assists from his time at Huddersfield, I think, but Fox strikes me as a Championship version of the steady Erik Pieters type, which is all good until he's asked to provide all of our width.

Not picking up any sense that a move away from wing-backs is imminent - but don't suppose we will...until it happens!

Not picking up any sense that a move away from wing-backs is imminent - but don't suppose we will...until it happens! No, he does seem wedded to it for now. He saw faults in how we applied the formation, not the actual formation itself! Shoehorning players into positions to which they are unaccustomed and for which they are ill suited does not usually end well.

He’s does but he’s still not really a wing back and doesn’t get up and down like you’d want one to. He’s way more suited to just playing a support out there and being ready for the overlap if the chance presents. Not as your main outlet down the right. Fox just clearly isn’t one.

Glad he recognises that there were issues with that performance despite the good result.
Onwards and upwards, hopefully he'll evolve this side and gradually improve things. We've at least won a game a bit earlier in the season than usual!

Bit worrying that he's singling out Gregory for praise tbh.
He was awful.

Bit worrying that he's singling out Gregory for praise tbh. He was awful. We need his mobility in the wing back system don't we? He pulls out into the channels, attracts the ball and buys time for the wing backs to get up the pitch. His touch is a bit dodgy at times but he's the only player really in the squad that can do that job. If we had fully competent Wing backs on both sides we wouldn't need that kind of forward, but we don't so we do.

Not Gregory’s biggest fan but his movement yesterday was very good and gave us an outlet, what he does with the ball is another story, but at least he scored..

At the risk of repeating myself I agree with his sentiments again. Progress on the pitch with youngers players integrating, coupled with a massive reshaping of the squad off it for the next 12/18 months is imperative. Promotion during that time would be a massive unexpected bonus.....

In his post match interview? God that was more than disappointing it was like watching paint dry. Even Angela Smith on radio Stoke was asking why we're playing such defensive dross at home. Gouranga.
