Let's face it the Stoke manager/coaches have had a good look at him and sad to say.....he ain't good enough,ta ta. Or they are not good enough. Which in fact none of them have been. The coaches have sung his praises for years. His team mates, in the youth sections, have too. I respect your view but I have not seen him do a lot, just glimpses of talent without long term consistency.

I predict he will have a very mediocre career. Talent without many other attributes means nothing and there is obviously something missing with this lad.
Invariably top players are not only the most talented but also the most dedicated and driven.

He wasn't being kept out of the side by anything or anyone approaching 'top player' status.

He doesn't get picked so doesn'y get to show what he can do, and people will say he can't do anything because he never plays. He's had good cameos but he's never played consistently so how can he show consistency...

Heāll have a decent career in the lower parts of poor European leagues - which is no bad thing.

That's the kind of anglo-arrogance that got us Brexit So you think a second division Dutch team could compete in the Championship the third best supported league in Europe? How many times do the likes of Ajax, Feyenoord and Eindhoven not qualify for Europe. How many Dutch teams can you name outside those or even in the second division? Had you heard of the team Verlinden's joined before yesterday. Go to Europe and they have heard of a lot of English Championship teams. Most countries outside England do not have the fan base or TV interest in teams outside the top teams so therefore the clubs do not have the riches that even championship teams have. It's not arrogance it's reality. I'm disappointed Verlinden didn't prove himself here but you cannot pretend he has gone to an equivalent Dutch team. And as a side note I am strongly pro European and have travelled extensively throughout Europe, speak French to a reasonable standard and enough German to get by. I make an effort in whichever country I am in to learn some of the languageĀ in restaurants and shops and with local people. I am offended by the description of me being Anglo arrogant and the Internet is not the place to trade insults with people you have never met or know nothing about. You can tell me you know more about Dutch football than I do and that I am wrong about the standard but I have the impression that just as Scottish second tier is not at the equivalent of the Championship nor is the rest of Europe. I will accept other people's opinions on this if they think otherwise because I will admit I know nothing about football in Europe outside the top teams. It seems funny though that when Potter was proposed as Stoke manager the response was that you can't compare success in Swedish football to being a prospective manager in the English second tier.Ā Firstly, I want to apologize for the offence taken. I got that impression from your comment but I didn't mean to and shouldn't reduce your whole personality to that. That arrogance, I do think is prevalent and is in my opinion one of the causes of Brexit, and is especially prevalent in Stoke. Hope you can understand it seemed like a logical leap to make but again, sorry for making it. I absolutely don't think Verlinden's new team is at the level of Stoke/the championship. But in your initial comment you said bottom half of 'most' European top divisions, and in your answer to me it changed to Dutch second division. Well, that's a big difference. Funnily enough, Potter was my first choice for Stoke manager both times he was available and reportedly interested.

He wasn't being kept out of the side by anything or anyone approaching 'top player' status. But isnāt that the nub of this conundrum? Was Verlinden a talented lad but with a poor attitude or was he simply victimised by a manager who only plays his favourites and not prepared to give talented youngsters a chance? I have no evidence either way but the fact that OāNeil has given numerous youngsters a chance in the last 12 months indicates to me that Verlinden either isnāt all that or has a poor attitude. Either way itās best he goes somewhere to try and revive his career. Iām still sad it didnāt work out with us mind.

It's the problem with the Internet which I hate most - people interpret what you say in a different way to the way you meant and because your not face to face there is no way of understanding that on either side. Think we probably agree more than we thought.

Can you get me in? I'm listening to what his coaches said in the Sentinel and other mags. The weird thing is Hughes, Jones, and, yes, MON have all spoken highly about him. But only Jones had the guts to give him a start in a match where he was man of the match. After which he never played him again, instead sending out on loan to Bolton, which, if you remember or go through the archives here in the Oatcake, was a very unpopular decision. I don't know anything Rowett, who's not a manager I rated at the time, ever said about Thibo. Lambert was in such a messy situation during his short stint here that I think he can be excused, and anyway, he's not supposed to pick boys for a relegation dog fight. Also I can't remember the exact times Verlinden went to Germany, and when he had his lenghty spell out with his back problem.

I guess it's safe to say that FS are up against it in this game, and have at times resembled Tottenham this season when they too parked the bus.
But they do have a certain amount of talent in the side and could be interesting to watch. They're certainly no pushover.
Clearly Ajax' players have been frustrated by FS' resilience and have resorted to a number of nasty fouls and appear to losing their temper.
Ajaz lead by one goal - an own goal by an FS player.
