Infuriating.
Obviously an 'if' but quite aside from him actually doing a proper job at CDM for us this season, 'if' he delivers on his potential, he could repay that outlay tenfold.
So from a playing perspective, Farto has arguably soiled himself as has our chief bean counter from a financial one.
Add in the huge brownie points out there just waiting to be claimed, as indicated by his near universal approval and we have really messed up.
Absolute nonsense Stoke.
These other two better be pretty chuffin' special.
Maybe this has been in the works for weeks? Maybe the player wanted to weigh his options up until now? We don't know, do we? As you say Rob, it's all ifs, buts and maybes.
And as you say, we will never know the behind the scenes specifics (albeit we had Chopper's "going well" missive the other day).
But the bare facts remain that we have lost out to, for whatever reason, West Brazil (galling at very best) on a player who, I for one, would have backed to be a huge asset in a hugely important position that still seems to me to be flapping in the wind (Cousins' "?" marks remain as yet and vague Badou back-in-the-fold references don't actually shout "we've nailed this folks" - see also, LB).
So I guess, I'm just expressing huge disappointment, wondering how all these other clubs seem to manage to muscle in on and "hi-jack' last minute transfers for players they really want to (& we never seem to) and hoping that we have someone else potentially even better still incoming.
Fingers crossed eh?

Also surprising re the connections with him at manager and player level?

If this lad has gone to West Brom, and if Stoke were interested in him, made a bid and spoke to him, how exactly have we messed up? If a player has a choice of clubs, he can't sign for all of them! Or do some of our fans think we have a divine right to sign every player we're interested in? No, I really don't - but if we're dealing with hypotheticals, can you assure me we tried our utmost and unfurled the full schlong on this one?
That'll be ano "no" then.
So until someone can mitigate one like this with bona fide ITK on how close we did or didn't come to landing him, I reserve the right to chalk it down as a massive opportunity missed and be justifiably disappointed thank you very much.
Especially given the importance of absolutely nailing down that CDM spot and the "?" marks surrounding any of its current suitors already here.

Perhaps we've backed off Ajayi with an understanding from WBA over Gayle?

Thanks Ned. That also.
But that actually makes it worse for me (we had the perfect 'in') - unless, that is, Semi's previous encounters with Jones and / or Hart weren't necessarily good ones?

You have no idea if we're even interested in this player. You can't go around accusing people at the club of messing up the signing of a player if there's no intention in attempting to bring him here in the first place.

Perhaps we've backed off Ajayi with an understanding from WBA over Gayle? WBA don't want him permanently and he's contracted to Newcastle. They just beat us to Ajayi I would say if indeed we were even after him.

West Brom are, as uncomfortable as it is, probably seen as a better bet than us at the moment aren't they though RSB? It's disappointing but it's one of those things.

They've sold a few players recently for decent money so won't have the FFP concerns or the massive wage bill to contend with. On the face of it, there's no reason at the moment why we shouldn't expect them to be able to at least compete with us for players.

You have no idea if we're even interested in this player. You can't go around accusing people at the club of messing up the signing of a player if there's no intention in attempting to bring him here in the first place. Dear me.
1. If we weren't we should have been. My opinion obviously (this is a message board for expressing same after all).
2. You obviously can't assure me / this board that we were / were not chasing him. That said the exalted Chopper, no less, seems to think we were (yes, I know, I know ... ) so there's a reasonable acceptance on here that we probably were, yes?
So that means are you questioning Chopper's ITK - ness? His disciples will be disappointed.
Either way, it's a debate with no destination in the abscence of either side having possession of the full facts pertaining to it.
Hence, I'm leaving it here: I'm hacked off we missed (someone who I feel would have been) a good 'un in a key position, still not nailed down - and that, quite naturally, begs the question did we do all we could to effect that?

Nothing 100% to suggest we were in for him and seems every time a player goes elsewhere is a case of why didn't we sign him. Hardly been a rake of quality signings by other teams to date. West Brom have lost their 3 main attacking threats and sources of goals from this time last term, 70 0dd goals a seriously weakened team and not going to worry about them too much.
He doesn't fit in in any way with the recent comments by Jones re difficult signings so perhaps we were never in the race

We all get carried away within our own club's "bubble" and think that the outside and independent arbitor will also see it through such rose tinted optical devices, eh?
Still a kick in the knackers though.

This is the main one out of all the targets I’d like in.

Crazy price, £1.5m?? Sounds like an outstanding prospect, only 25 and got 8 goals as a DM. At least there’s value for money to be had outside the greed league. Big Slav starting to build a squad I see.
