Big time bowler is Broady, happy for him.

Broad on a run.
Quite lucky mind.
1st wicket - poor umpire decision and a mistake from Warner not to review
2nd wicket - he reverted to short of a length after being driven for 4 (as ever!) and Bancroft, off the back foot, played a shot he didn't have to.
Anyway - what was that Napolean said about lucky generals.
Keep going boys. A good start.

A tad worrying that we've only had 13 overs so far and Anderson spent four of those off the field. Hope it was just a dodgy curry last night & not his calf.

Pitch looks a bit on the slow side here, if we get them out cheaply we SHOULD be able to bat on this... in a world where we had a decent batting line up of course

Pattinson and Cummins have long injury histories too, big ask to take such a workload without an extra seamer.

Stokes is way too scattergun here, no consistency at all.

Why is Anderson not bowling?
First morning of the test and we've got our 4th seamer and offie bowling.
That ain't good.

We could do with this partnership broken sooner rather than later.

A session of two halves, but I’d still say England shaded it. 3 wickets after being put in the field is always a decent result, especially on a batting pitch (which this is). Aussies will be encouraged by Smith who hasn’t looked troubled at all. Jimmy’s fitness is a worry, Broad’s spell after lunch could be a crucial early period.

Playing Jimmy looks to have been a mistake if he has to be wrapped in cotton wool like this. Is the next test match immediately after this one? If so, I doubt he'll be playing in it.

Especially with an inform Olly Stone waiting in the wings. We’ll see, if thrre was a serious problem he wouldn’t be fielding, might just need some loosening work on the calf.

A pretty even first session. It looks like a reasonable wicket to bat on but these Duke balls will always move around when they are new. Anderson not bowling much must be fitness related as they would surely have wanted him to bowl at Smith before he had settled.

I have it 55/45 England at the moment, will jump massively if Smith falls early after lunch or if he bats for another hour....

You really have an issue with Stuart Broad don't you? Yes - and no. Btw - you might have seen some subsequent third man analysis of Broad's bowling which re-enforces the points I've made. His biggest successes comes when he bowls full, but he bowls short too often. Describing Broad's two wickets as lucky is quite unfair as although the lbw against Warner was missing, it just balanced out the fact that he should have had him caught behind first ball but it wasn't given. And if you are saying that every batsman who is caught by a ball that he didn't have to play is unlucky then there are a lot of unlucky dismissals in cricket, including the one Woakes got this morning.

Describing both of Broad's wickets as lucky you may think is unfair but it is nevertheless accurate. Of course Broad was also unlucky in not getting the caught behind earlier. Then again, he was a dick in wasting a review on an LBW appeal that was clearly going over the stumps. That's Broad for you, a curate's egg of a player Woakes's wicket on the other hand had no element of luck - a perfect delivery down Boyc's corridor of uncertainty that Khawaja had to play at. So, not all dismissals are down to luck. Did you really need me to explain that to you?

Oh dear not good for Anderson!!! Not looking good either for our selectors or medical staff. Suffering a recurrence of that injury after just 4 overs on the opening morning suggests our fitness tests ain't worth shit. Fair enough later in the test after putting in a big shift, but he's hardly got going.

Big wicket!
I think we need to get back into test mode lads, always gonna be some partnerships but I think we've become conditioned to fretting whenever there's a lull. Good work from Woakes, if it's not doing much at least be accurate and he's been bob on since lunch.
