Well fresh off the bat from winning our first World Cup, it's back to red ball business. First up a 4 day test against Ireland at Lords and then the usual 5 matches against the Aussies: England v Ireland (One off Test): 24th-27th July at Lord's 1st Test: Edgbaston 1st-5th of August: Australia won by 251 runs2nd Test: Lord's 14th-18th of August: Match Drawn3rd Test: Headingley 22nd-26th of August: England won by 1 wicket4th Test: Old Trafford 4th-8th of September: Australia won by 185 runs and retain the Ashes5th Test: The Oval 12th-16th of September: England won by 135 runs
www.ecb.co.uk/england/men/news/1281055/england-squad-announced-for-the-inaugural-ireland-test-match squad news for Ireland and we have plenty of niggles. I would assume Archer's injury layoff is precautionary and he will most definitely feature at Edgbaston or Lord's. No Buttler or Stokes who are also rested. Roy features for the first time along with Gregory from Somerset and Olly Stone from Warwickshire.
Dom Sibley misses out.

England's squad for Ireland: Joe Root (c), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Lewis Gregory, Jack Leach, Jason Roy, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes.
England's preliminary Ashes squad: Joe Root (c), Moeen Ali, Jimmy Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Lewis Gregory, Jack Leach, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.
Foakes absence is a big disappointment mainly because it suggests the clarity of thinking on selection that has been so vital to our ODI success is still not present in our test selection. Namely - pick your best batsmen, pick your best 4 bowlers (typically 3 quicks and 1 spinner), pick your best wicket keeper and pick your best all rounder (assuming you have one who is good enough).
Our starting 11 for the first Ashes test (assuming everyone is fit) will most likely be (IMO)
Burns Roy Denly Root Stokes Buttler Bairstow Ali Archer Broad Anderson
It sort of obvious when you see it set down like that that Denly is by some distance the worst of the top 7 batsmen, so he shouldn't be there. Instead, Foakes should be in at 7 as keeper and everyone else (including Joe "nae balls" Root) moves up 1.

Stokes at 5, Butler 6, Moeen 7 and Woakes 8. I agree with you though Foakes deserves a spot at least in the squad, Denly just doesn’t strike me as someone good enough to make the step up....

I’d go with Burns Roy Root Morgan Stokes Buttler Bairstow Woakes Rashid Archer Anderson Morgan would be a disaster, doesn’t have the technique to be a successful test match player.

The XI for the Ireland match starting tomorrow confirmed as: Roy Burns Denly Root Bairstow Ali Curran Woakes Broad Leach Stone
Should be an easy win for England and probably over within 3 days.

Few Middlesex lads in that Ireland set up who may have a few tricks up their sleeve, but England should win comfortably. Fingers crossed Roy's Test debut goes better than his ODI one.

I'm not so sure. That looks like a pretty lame 11 to me. If we do win comfortably it will be mostly down to Ireland being very poor. Here's hoping Roy, Stone and Leach do well. They, unlike Burns, Denly and several others, do have the potential to be part of England's test future.

The batting does look weak, I just done think Ireland will have the batting to give themselves a chance. I would say from that eleven only Burns, Roy, Root, Bairstow and Woakes are a definite for the first test. Hopefully the competition for the remaining places will see a professional performance against the Irish.

In other news the Aussies are currently playing a game against themselves in Southampton.
The side containing the majority of their likely Ashes batsmen are currently 100-8 having been sent in on a green seamer.
Doesn’t bode well for them.

They ended up being bowled out for 105. Their other team finished the day 96-7. The majority of the damage was done by bowlers unlikely to play in the Ashes like Neser, Bird and Siddle.

He hasn't played a test match for nearly a year and his ashes record is very poor averaging 19 with the bat and 53 with the ball. He is probably in competition with Curran for a spot, otherwise he will probably have to rely on Archer and Anderson being injured.

After Anderson I would say Woakes has been our best bowler in home series over the last couple of years. His stats don’t always look brilliant, mainly because his record bowling overseas with the kookaburra ball is pretty abysmal. He was excellent last summer against the Indians and his rhythm looked really good during the World Cup. I would pick him ahead of Broad without a shadow of a doubt. As you rightly said though, it’s very likely he’ll be competing with Curran for a place for the first test.

Australia's reluctance to pick Siddle until it's too late will always baffle me. It's like they can't swallow their pride and admit he's the best bowler they've got in our conditions.

Tim Murtagh's first class record at Lord's
291 wickets at 23 a piece.....different circumstances but don't be shocked if he rocks us a bit at some point.

No reprieve this time, gone for 5. As I said in the other thread, against the moving ball first up I'm really not convinced at all.

A decent opener can leave that ball alone, it was on about sixth stump so didn’t need to play at it. The piece they did before play about how Roy plays way out in front shows me that he won’t be a successful test match opener. You can get away with that technique overseas on flatter pitches but not in England. All the best test batsmen play the ball as late as possible.

If not Roy to open against the Aussies, then who? Denly to open,Root at 3,Roy at 4? I don't much rate Denly, but at least he is an opener by trade. I understand the idea behind Roy but in Test Cricket it's rare you hit someone out of the attack and a quick 40 or so runs is neither here nor there. Much better as an opener to take the shine off the new ball, bed in and then let 3,4,5,6 have an easier time. That won't happen though, cause Root evidently wants to bat 4 and having Roy at 3 is practically the same difference.
